Root, Root, Pay for the Home Team? Taxpayers Funding Professional Sports Stadiums

...Root, Root, Pay for the Home Team? Taxpayers Funding Professional Sports Stadiums Kayla Thompson MBA 578 SB FT Managerial Economics April 13, 2013 ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of the public (taxpayers) funding the construction and/or renovation of privately owned sports stadiums. The use of public funds has skyrocketed since the early 1980s. Why has there been an increase in the trend and what is really going on behind the scenes? Through my research, I have found six articles that deal with many questions surrounding this hot topic issue. First, I will examine how the sports teams and the local governments deal with the public when proposing the funding of the sports teams’ stadiums. After the public agrees to back the construction of a stadium, the next step is to find out where those funds are coming from. I will take a look at how the increase in taxes are being implemented and just exactly how much debt these taxes are trying to pay off. Once all of this information is determined, it is easy to get to the real question of this research paper: Is funding the construction of a new sports stadium worth it for the taxpayers of that city? Does the revenue outweigh the debts, or will it never pay off? The answer to this might just change the readers’ minds next time they are sitting at their home stadium watching their favorite team play. INTRODUCTION Taxpayers funding sports stadiums has become more and more prominent since...

...Just-in-Time Inventory Management Introduction ‘Just in the nick of time’ is a common phrase used by people when referring to the arrival of someone or something anticipated with minimal time left on the clock. This idiom, which was recorded to have begun being used around the 1580’s, is the basis for the modern day activity of ‘just-in-time’ inventory. Just-in-time inventory has been the ‘buzz’ word circulating throughout corporations and small businesses. What is just-in-time (JIT) inventory management? The purpose of this paper will be to offer the reader an overview of JIT inventory management, by way of, JIT background, the success of JIT, problems with JIT, and the future of JIT inventory management in organizations of all sizes. Background To fully understand just-in-time (JIT) inventory management, one most know the background of JIT. The definition of JIT is an inventory management strategy aimed at monitoring the inventory process in such a manner as to minimize the costs associated with inventory control and maintenance (Broyles et. al, 2005). The process involves knowing exactly how much of a given item is available at all times during the business day, and how long it will take to order and replace that product. The history of just-in-time (JIT) can be traced to the Toyota Production System developed by then vice president, Taiichi Ohno (Monden, 1983; Vokurka et. al, 2007). Due to international competition in the industry, Toyota realized they...

OLAÑO Subject Teacher Submitted by: CHARISH JOY B. BAYOT 10-EINSTEIN March 2016 HISTORY OF VICES IN TEXAS The history of vice in the U.S. state of Texas has been an important part of the state's past and has greatly influenced its development. Vice activities, such as gambling and prostitution, have historically been a significant facet of both the state's culture and its economy. Law enforcement organizations have traditionally defined vice as including prostitution, gambling, alcohol and narcotics, and pornography. These activities, though always controversial, represented major influences in the state with some enterprises at times holding legendary status. The legal status of the individual activities has fluctuated substantially over time. Additionally during some periods individual communities and public officials have been accepting of many of these activities, even when they were illegal, because of corruption, because the activities were seen as inevitable, or often because the activities were economically important. Early Texas and the Republic of Texas Before the arrival of the European settlers in Texas, the plant peyote (peyotl in Nahuatl) had become a popular hallucinogenic among tribes in the Rio Grande Valley as well as parts of West Texas and Chihuahua. Tribes in the area included the Carrizo...

...Running Head: DISHARMONY AND MISMATCH Disharmony and Mismatch: The Truth about Online Dating Isioma K. Ehiobu CAS 4703-993 April 27, 2011 Disharmony and Mismatch: The Truth about Online Dating Five years ago American journalist, Thomas Friedman, wrote a book entitled The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century. His main reason for writing this book was to point out that the world in which we live in was being flattened by technology. What he meant by the term “flatten” was that the things that couldn’t be done decades ago due to the lack of technology are now being conducted today at a fast rate because of how advanced the technology is today. Take for instance, the Internet, decades ago not that much could be done on it but now it allows people to communicate with one another across the globe. He goes into detail as he talks about the workflow software, which was one of the ten forces that flatten the world as it contributed to the improvement of the Internet (Friedman, 2006, p. 78). Now it allows people to interact with one another through various means like social network, emails, and now with the upcoming of Internet dating. Internet dating, once considered taboo, is now an effective way to meet others like ourselves that we may have otherwise not met in a public setting. Today, this type of dating appears to be replacing our traditional ways when looking for a soulmate, especially for those who have had an unsuccessful face-to-face...

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W.
