According to Merriam-Webster, a highway is “a main road that connects cities, towns, etc.” Literally it serves as an essential road, or a main route to someplace available to cars, people and animals. People go there for many things, and usually everyone or everything that travels to a highway has one specific goal. That goal is to get somewhere else. Some might go there to look for help but still, they are trying to get past their current situation, whatever that situation may be. Therefore, they are trying to go somewhere; from one situation to better one. The symbolic meaning for the highway is a troubled time, or a time of conflict, or struggle. The story first opens up by describing the father’s struggles pertaining to taking care of all of his kids. ...Invictus by William E. Henley and the Documentary Evolution of a Criminal are very similar they share` similar, theme, tone, and in some sense order of events. These two have the same general theme; the theme is main life is tough, the decisions and things we do in life can put us in a dark place. Even though you are in that dark place you do not have to stay there, you can come out. Invictus is Latin for "invicta" meaning “unconquerable” or “undefeated”. In William Henley's poem, he describes someone with the qualities of being undefeated and unconquerable. Moreover, to me that also seem to describe Darius, as he was unwilling to be defeated or conquered he was "invicta". In the documentary by Darius Monroe, he used two literary elements that stood out to me the most. The first thing you see in the documentary is a young Darius being taken down the stairs out of his school handcuffed this was an example of foreshadowing. That record was a long, themed exercise in sustained mood and atmosphere featuring guests as venerable as Danny Thompson, Martin Carthy and Robyn Hitchcock. In contrast, A+E is short, loud and brattish. It’s also tremendous fun. Driven by some of Coxon’s most innovative and uninhibited guitar playing, A+E’s trump card is its sheer sense of adventure. It’s not an album for lovers of the perfectly turned pop song so much as those who prefer to be bombarded by sonic extremes. The scratchy, angular pop of fizzing opener “Advice” sets the scene: melodic precision makes way for lopsided rhythm, abrasive textures, extemporised experimentation and vintage electronic equipment running riot. Much of the album takes delight in what can only be described as the sound of machinery arguing. The element of chance effectively becomes another instrument. ...Joshua Zemsky Inside Job Extra Credit First of all, I think it is extremely comical that man with a net worth of $65 million (Matt Damon) is going to narrate a film that claims that the smartest men in the world are too greedy and are over-compensated. I do not believe I have ever seen such a closed minded, uneducated propagandas film before. This film was really just a way to bash Wall Street. It was not very viable and many “facts” were skewed. It was made in a very intelligent way though, to make what they were saying seem like they were good facts and statistics. One thing that really stood out when I was watching was when they were talking about the Bush tax cuts and how rich people saved more money from those cuts then poor people. They do not explain percentages though. For example, say person A makes $10 and person B makes $100. If person A saves 10% of that, he is saving $1. If person B saves 5%, less than 10%, he saves $5. So he is saving more total money, but not as much of a percentage of his income. That is a HUGE failure of the movie to identify and state that. Those are not facts that the filmmaker wants to show though, because it will help to disprove his argument. The movie talks about how poor de-regulation is for Wall Street. Why though? In the movie, Mandela (Morgan Freeman) had just left prison and become the president, with the intention of unite the people and make them live without racism and prejudice. Mandela uses the national rugby team to help him achieve his goal. All the players and all the supporters of the team were white, while black people, who liked more soccer, hated them. The president had a tough task, but he united his efforts with the captain of the team, François Pienaar (Matt Damon), so they could make the whole population believe in the team and support it together, just like a nation should do. Apartheid was a severe form of segregation of black and white people in South Africa during part of XX century, creating a feeling of hate between the two racial groups. Mandela not only ended this system, but also tried to avoid revenge from the black, that suffered so much prejudice during so many years, creating a feeling of compassion and respect between everyone in his country. ...The Rainmaker Extra Credit Paper From the first couple minutes of the film I was shocked at how illegally both the defendant and plaintiff lawyers would act. They would cross the line so many times, trying to twist the truth to make their side of the story sound better than the others. It began to seem like both sides eventually convinced themselves that they were right. In midst of all the conniving that was going on, I was a fan of the way Rudy (Matt Damon) acted by following the rules in order to win his case. Although there was still lying done on their side (mainly just to throw off their opponent lawyers and cause them to believe something happened when it really didn’t) Rudy was never the one to actually commit the act. He would always stay true to the case while forming meaningful connections with his clients. I liked how Rudy would stay true to his word when he spoke to his clients, which is why he was probably so successful in his first case. I previously had imagined the legal system ran in a similar way, but this assumption was based off shows that are much more unrealistic.
