Choreographic elements came into play. They used points on stage as the narrator was right front stage and the story was going on in the background. The show was really amazing in the sense that the stage set designs, the costumes, and all the visual elements blend together. The puppet like figures that were in the shape of the animals controlled by the actors on stage was a great contribution to the visual elements of the show. I was glad I had the opportunity to see the production. Everything looked like real animals! It was a perfect combination of art, entertainment, and music. The Lion King is able to bring these three elements together and make it a great show. They made use of all three levels high, medium, and low. They also make use of the space on the stage perfectly. There was circular, horizontal, and vertical motion. There was tempo in the music. It was fast when it needed to be fast, building up anticipation for the audience, and slow when it needed to be slow in other to blend with the dancers move and the narrator’s voice. I caught rhythmic pattern in the music as there was emphasis on the beat. Some voices and beats were repeated over and over again. There was use of some African language called Swahili. There was use of strength and energy. At the very beginning the narrator was yelling at the top of his voice. The narration was done mostly in forms of music. There are counts before music change and they made use of silence. There was stillness in between the first ten minutes of the show. I do believe the producers’ intent was achieved because the performance was done according to the story most people are familiar with. Through dance and movement, the storyline were expanded by combining a variety of Ballet, Jazz, Modern Dance, African Dance, and Cultural Dance. The choreography was a huge success because it makes me and most of the audience to look at dance without going through boredom. Everything in the production looked real. They had the father lion, mother lion and child lion. There was great presentation of the jungle in the show. The dance movements were generally related to the central idea of the story. The moves of the bird, antelope and zebra were just like a real animal. At some point I thought they had brought real animals to the stage. The choreographer did a great job in relating the dance moves describing what the actual Lion King movie was about. Furthermore, the choreographer tried to make it a great show to watch for the whole family. They made it suitable for kids especially when the cartoon that children love is brought live at a whole new dimension. The choreographer also made it a great show for kids because it really taught the value of family and the importance of having parents in our lives. The show really stays loyal to this trait. In conclusion, The Lion King is a show to watch over and over again. It is suitable for everyone and I would recommend this show for anyone. It was worth paying for.

Dance History

...Moore Dance/3rd block April 20, 2012 Dance that changed History For centuries, dance has been a form of communication and has played a major role in many societies. It has become significant to humans’ health, as well as their state of mind. In addition to this, dance has also served as a valid form of social protest and commentary, which enable people to stand up and hold firm in their beliefs. Gerald Arpino, a dancer, choreographer, and director used one of his masterpieces “The Clowns”, as a way to exemplify a social protest. The Clowns was one of the first ballets to address the issue of the nuclear holocaust, which in turn raised eyebrow and served as an anti-war statement. The Clowns juxtaposed the nuclear holocaust with the clown figures to comment on the tragedy and the comedy of the human existence. (Candler 1) It served as a threat because it was against war and everything else that was occurring during the period of the holocaust. Not only that, but this dance, ultimately addressed the issue of universal annihilations. Arpino exceeded the boundaries and expectations with this piece and made a statement, through dance, expressing his disapproval for the matters at hand. The Clowns tell the tale of how one transforms or conforms in the world of fear, such as the nuclear holocaust. The dance was composed to exhibit the fear of destruction and the chance of reformation. The music was done by Hersey Kay and added to the elements of the dance. The ballet...

Aliceinwonderland

...“Dancing amid a thousand faces, her face glows with life… Never before had she danced with such passion. To any other person, she’d come across as someone who’s celebrating life; who’s ‘living it up’ in style… Did the thought ever cross your mind that she’s dancing away the blues? (No way!) She’s neither the ‘Lady in red’, nor is she ‘the girl next door’… She’s just another victim of the ‘Alice in Wonderland Syndrome’; dreaming her secret dreams, craving her secret life…” Why are we afraid of admitting that we are day-dreamers? Why are we unwilling to accept that there’s a little bit of ‘Alice’ or ‘Walter Mitty’ in each of us? Do we fear what people would think of us; how they would laugh behind our backs; or is it simply the pre-conceived notion that “Nobody would understand”? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to real world! A world where one feels lost among 6.8 billion faces; and finds solace when he just whiles away hours staring at the ceiling fan, ‘pretending’ to sleep. In the real world, things couldn’t get more ‘realistic’ than this… Or could they? “Life is a long-long road and we are but travelers.” And like good travelers who are faithful to their voyage, we must journey on; in search of a niche where we would ‘fit in’, a niche that is symbolic of our ‘selves’. Why aren’t we told to enrich our voyage with experiences as enthralling as the adventures of Alice in Wonderland? Perhaps that is the reason why we fade into a world of our own every now and then. Because the outside...

Gay Marriage

...10/27/11 Debate Ms.Nicol Persuasive Speech Dance education is a topic that everyone here should care about. Everybody has heard of the budget cuts, having the dance teachers losing a job to teach students, and to have more space for the dance studio as an outlet. My question for this topic is dance education important to public schools? Dance education is important to public schools, because dance provides benefits for students’ health and well-being. My 3 arguments about dance education are the money from the budget cuts that is ruining our education, having dance teachers losing jobs to teach students, and to have a dance studio for students if there is a problem with teachers, or family members. Dance education needs money for the program to any schools that really want to dance as an art major or minor. It is for people to have jobs as a dance choreographer to teach students how to dance. There wouldn’t be dance education without an outlet for students whether its having stress or family problems. An outlet will be really helpful for the students to do better in their academic classes when they sit down to take a test or a quiz at the classroom, and they’ll be able to dance again by expressing yourself from your body. My first reason why the dance teachers aren’t teaching the students to take dance class seriously, they will give up their jobs, and to lose the arts programs that students need to care about...

The Role of Music

...Unit 4 Project – Music Kaplan University HU300 – Art and Humanities: 20th Century and Beyond March 27, 2012 Limiting ourselves to one kind of music is as detrimental to our growth as if we were never to set foot outside our house and discover the unlimited life experiences waiting out there. (Janaro & Altshuler, 2009). For me music is the best creation humanity has made. It makes me cry if I am sad, dance if I am in a party, smile if it is romantic, sad if I am thinking in a bad love experience, and happy when I am home resting and listen to it. In my personal view, music is one of people’s spiritual nourishment. I listen to music every day and love to sing along to my favorite tunes. Music makes me feel good and can get my mind off things that are bothering me as well! Some music is relaxing while some really makes me more stressed. Music becomes my interest. I like this wisdom, "interest is the best teacher." As time goes by more and more music that I have been listening to, I can sing and understand the meaning of the song that really attracts me. While I am listening to the music, I slowly I begin to figure out my favorite idols and songs. If I listen to some really beautiful melody or rhythms that able to touch my heart, I will find the appropriate spare time to listen and learn how to sing until I have completely understood. My father’s favorite music was the Tango. Every day at five o’clock in the morning he used to turn the radio...

Raised in New York and initially trained in Florida with Nolan Dingman and Christa Long, Forsythe danced with the Joffrey Ballet and later the Stuttgart Ballet, where he was appointed Resident Choreographer in 1976. In collaboration with media specialists and educators, Forsythe has developed new approaches to dance documentation, research, and education. As for us students, Forsythe as an educator, is regularly invited to lecture and give workshops at universities and cultural institutions. In 2002, Forsythe was chosen as one the founding Dance Mentor for The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. We had the chance to watch one of his choreograph video called “One flat thing reproduced”; in this video gave me a sense of craziness and desperation. One flat thing was a video that truly has to be observed to get the performance in it and the magnificent movements that valet has to offer. It is a completely different horizon to our nature of dance but it also requires a lot of talent and hard work to show off. Forsythe is a guy who knows his work and gives his passion to it in every work of his. Valet takes hard work and year for perfection but so does a good chorographer like William...

Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self

...Nikki Jones Professor French Engl. 1301 April 3, 2013 Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self One's perception of themselves is usually influenced by their own experiences. In Alice Walker essay "Beauty: When the Other Dancer self" she describes herself over coming and gaining acceptance of herself exactly the way she is. She narrates in remembrance of the event that forever changed her and perception of beauty. Walker uses superlatives, Metaphors, and tense throughout her writing to deliver her ever-changing outlook toward her own beauty. Walker describes the accident that happens to her as a child to show that one’s mindset can be altered through an intense experience and how her attitude completely transforms from a arrogant child into a newly reincarnated woman who now sees a new kind of beauty from within herself. She uses different points of her life to develop this very idea in separate comprehensible stages. She brings the scene to life when she tells us how she manipulates her daddy into taking her to the county fair by swirling around, with her hands on her hips, in her pretty dress and biscuit polished patent leather shoes and says '“I’m the prettiest!”' As she parades around using her cuteness for her father's approval. Her attitude is further encouraged by the people of her church. She was always used to hearing “'Oh, isn’t she the cutest thing!' This makes us believe that she is satisfied with her looks and shows us that she is confident with the outer...

Creative Dance

...CREATIVE DANCE History of Creative Dance Creative dance is perceived differently by different sectors of the education system. In many provinces, creative dance is part of the physical education curriculum. More recently, two provinces— British Columbia and Saskatchewan— have considered placing dance under the rubric of arts education. The aspect of creative dance that is emphasized reflects the position creative dance is assigned in the curriculum. When in the physical education curriculum, creative dance lessons typically focus on development of the motor skills involved, with little concern for the experience’s aesthetic potential. In arts education, the primary focus is creative dance’s aesthetic potential. Advocates view creative dance not only as having potential for developing motor skills or aesthetic sensibility, but as a means to improve students’ self-concept and as a valuable component of an integrated curriculum. Upon closer scrutiny, however, these different ways of justifying creative dance may prove contradictory. “Creative dance” is a particular form of dance. This form is typically taught in elementary schools because unlike other dance forms, it does not require years of training. Basically, creative dance involves the use of movement elements to express thoughts and feelings. Dimondstein (1974) expands on this definition when she considers dance to be “the interpretation of a child’s ideas, feelings, and sensory impressions expressed symbolically in movement...

Martha Graham Video Reflection

...Natalie Bean October 15 2012 KNH 110 Video Reflection How the technique seen and discussed in the video relates to choreographed excerpts seen in the video specifically Lamentation. How Martha personal words, and that of those who knew her, helped you better understand what she was trying to do in her choreography, and how she used her technique to facilitate theme? The video that I watched in class had a varied of different movement. The class video had a lot more different dance but I think their dance was structure more. The Lamentation video was an expressionist dance, which was focus on the next movement. The Lamentation video was limited to dance movement because she is stuck in a tricot. This dance expresses her feeling and was kind of telling a story. Dance doesn't have to be defined by gratuitous amounts of movement and this is an amazing form of art. I think Martha was trying to express an idea by looking at something very deep grief or sadness and she's brought it out. Not everybody look at things the same way as others. I know that there are things that are deeply meaningful for other people that aren't so for me. That many others or I don't 'get' something doesn't make it any less valid. If popularity were a measure of artistic validity then Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber would have to be considered the best artistic geniuses of all time. The Lamentation video touches me and brought back memories of a time when I lost a love ones. The way I interpret...

An Evening's Dance

...expressed through the form of interpretive dance. With each dance show there’s so much that supports each dancer, each dance number, and the entire production. Between the props, theatre seating, performance space, and costumes, all can help bring out the show as a form of great entertainment and more importantly, a success!! “An Evening’s Dance” was quite an interesting show in the fact that once I arrived, the seating style was much to my liking. In a modified American style seated theatre, I sat on the back section of the theatre with the stage and proscenium arch located in front of me. This helped enhance the dancers since they were the center of the audience’s attention, and provided them depth in the stage in order to add different perceptions throughout the production. For example, the proscenium arch was located near the Grand Drape in the theatre, meaning it comes from both sides of the stage and closes in the middle. The lighting was quite different for this show than others I have seen, the light change periodically with the music to portray moods such as sadness, anger, and happy. Tied to the lighting, was the music and sound for each dance number, with each girls dance moves based on changes in both lighting and sound. In the last dance number, the girls were all set up on stage with the lights off and multiple chairs used as props for the dance. They danced around, on, and even moved the chairs at one point for the dance production. Each girl had a specific...

Non Verbal Communication

...Non-verbal communication (NVC) is the process of communicating through sending and receiving written messages and conveying messages through gestures. The quote, “Actions speak louder than words” clearly explains the meaning of nonverbal communication as well as tell us it's importance in our daily conversations. Nonverbal communication is the most important of all types of communications. It is divided into four basic types – physical, esthetic, symbolic and communication through signs. Physical - includes facial expressions, touch, smell, body movements, etc. Esthetic – includes conveying messages through painting, sculpture, dancing, etc. Symbolic – includes those involved in religion and maintaining status. Signs – includes both mechanical and physical. Our facial expressions are especially important in conveying emotions. One should pay attention to the multiple aspects of nonverbal communication and their relation with the verbal communication. In any interaction, one is likely to get simultaneous messages from a person's eyes, gestures, facial expressions, posture, use of space and touch. This would lead to misinterpretation of the conveyed/intended messages. Nonverbal messages are inherently ambiguous and could be multichanneled too. Hence, it is difficult to decode the nonverbal messages. Therefore, care is to be taken while interpreting nonverbal msesages and new and innovative ways to 'read' the same will have to be developed to prevent unnecessary...

American in Paris

...able to keep you entertained. It took one month to film and cost $500,000 to produce that one scene. I saw this question and was curious of when this scene would appear and I was surprised to see it was right at the end. The scene follows Jerry through Paris and he runs into a lot of people on his “trip”. It is like Jerry is in this dream/reality recapping his relationship with Lise. There are many types of dancing featured in these last seventeen minutes. From every scene, it is like he enters a different world inspired by famous artists. Jerry is in this constant struggle of his relationship with Lise and tries to win her back with his dancing. It is astounding that no words were sung or spoken; it was just pure musical instruments and dance. There were hundreds of dancers, not just Jerry. It looks very technical with all the dancers, but they all make it look so easy. A giant highlight in that scene is the vast amount of outfits. Their outfits are magnificent and everyone is wearing something very unique to that time period. The person that brought this scene and the whole movie to life was George Gershwin. George Gershwin was the composer for this film. He focused in on both classical and popular genres. He was influenced by French composers of the early twentieth century. His main area of expertise was jazz and most of his movies use jazz extensively. He produced musical comedies in his early life, while his work, Of thee I sing (1931), was the first musical comedy to win...

Dogon Dance

...Dogon Mask Dance Dogons are from Mali in West Africa. Dogon masks rank among the most respected within the world of tribal art collections and have influenced such Western 20th-century artists as Picasso and Braque, even the Cubist movement. The mask binds the Dogon people to the celestial world of heaven (where the afterworld exists) and Earth, which provides food, shelter and life. An important Dogon tradition is the Dama or masked funeral dance. By masquerading behind masks, the dancers allow the souls of the deceased to escape to their final resting place and to join the ranks of their ancestors, thereby restoring order to the universe. Participation in the Dama is a great honor as it represents the final step in the passage from boyhood to manhood. Boys eagerly watch the infrequently performed ``Dama``, in anticipation of the day in which they may also participate in the dance. The village Elders, who are too old to endure the physical exertion of the dance, stand on the sideline, play the music, explain the meaning of the various masks, and keep the pace of the ritual going. The Dama is usually performed every five years or so. Another one is the ``Sigi`` The most significant celebration that take place every 60 years. The dancers of the sirige mask are considered the most skilled. They use their teeth to balance the 20-foot (6-meter) high mask, which is carved from the limb of a single tree. Dancers swing the mask in sweeping motions to represent the...
