IA12209 PORTFOLIO PE 2 Rhythmic Activities Submitted to: Prof. Kristine Pecson-Cinco Dance The word “Dance” comes from the Greek word “damson” which means to stretch. All dancing is made up of stretching and relaxing. Thus, a simple analysis of the term “sayaw” which easily lead one to say that is must have derived from the word “saya” which means happy. A person who is very happy or in the rhythmical movement is an outward expression of his feeling. Meaning: • Dance of many types is the physical expression of rhythm and music. • It is a pure expression of the dancers’ thoughts and feelings. • It is the union of movement, rhythm and arts of life. • It is the union of minds and body expressing the intangible through the medium of time and space. ...ENGL 103.G35 Cultural Analysis Cover Girl has always been a popular make-up company, and since they sell make-up, their main target is undoubtedly woman. In the new Cover Girl Nature Luxe commercial, they target women, especially in their teens, in multiple ways. They use a celebrity that is popular for that age group; she is wearing glamorous, sparkly dresses, she’s dancing nonstop and having fun, and they try to make the audience “join the movement.” Figure 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMt6TFO0zn4 Figure 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMt6TFO0zn4 The advertisement starts out right away with the popular music artist Taylor Swift as the only person in the entire commercial. The company makes a big emphasis on this and even puts her name in the commercial underneath the company name, seen in Figure 1, as if to highlight the fact that she’s in the commercial and wearing their product, even though it’s very clear who it is to the majority of the population. Cover Girl chose Taylor Swift to be the star of their commercial for a few reasons. They are targeting teenage girls, and Taylor is in that age range herself. She’s also extremely successful in her career and is an attractive young woman that a lot of girls wish they could look like or just be. By using Taylor Swift when she has all these qualities, it sends out a message to the watchers that if you use their product, you’ll be able to be like Taylor Swift. ...Harrison Liu 932273007 Rita Feinstein Writing 121 February 3, 2015 Aristotle once stated “man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual.” Looking at modern society, people often choose to conform to the “group’s” opinion. People choose to discard their own personal identity to stay under the radar and avoid being labeled a misfit. This leads to the abdication of free will. In Taylor Swift’s recent music video “Shake it Off”, she uses both her lyrics, and images in the video to display to the audience how free will is discarded to obtain collectivism. When initially listening to the song, one first notices the happy and upbeat background music. Background music is often regarded as the most essential piece of a song as it is the biggest contributor in giving the audience their first impression of the song, the message. As explained in Dramas, Fields, and Metaphors: Symbolic Action in Human Society, first impressions are more than just the initial establishment of a person. First impressions create the foundation of one’s characterization of another and are the hardest to forsake in an attempt to change. Taylor Swift incorporates a very fast paced, upbeat background in her song. This generates a very positive and happy impression making the audience think of her as a cheerful buoyant person. Swift’s immediate attempt to make the...

...Arsenio Spears 08-10-12 Mrs. Johnson Comp I Field Trip/Hip Hop & Dance Learning a dance routine is more fun than I thought it would be. I thought we were going to see a play in the theatre. Come to find out we were going to be taught a choreographed hip hop routine. This was a new experience for me. I was afraid of trying at first but then I realized it wasn’t that serious, so I calmed down and just danced. It was only me and Mississippi (a fellow classmate) and two other females that I didn’t know dancing when we started. It was supposed to be the whole class, but they didn’t want to dance because they were afraid of looking bad. I just wanted to have fun and I did because I have never done some of the things the dance instructor told use to do. We were dancing to a rappers song called “Work Hard, Play Hard” by Wiz Khalifa. It made it just a little bit easier that we danced to a song that I knew. If given the same opportunity again I would do it again. I had fun because we looked like we belonged in an Usher video or something when we got through. Another plus was that there were a couple of nice young ladies dancing as well, and that’s never a bad thing. All in all that was a new learning experience in my life that I never expected to happen. I just wish I could remember the dance so I could show it to other...

...TYPES OF DANCE: 1. Ballet * A type of performance dance that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary based on French terminology. It has been globally influential and has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres. Ballet may also refer to a ballet dance work, which consists of the choreography and music for a ballet production. A well-known example of this is The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet that was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a music score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. * Ballets are usually theatrical and use elaborate costumes and staging. There are exceptions however, mostly by Balanchine. Ballet is also closely related to opera with many ballet companies stationed in opera houses and many operas, especially French and early Italian operas, containing ballet scenes. There is even a genre called opera-ballet that uses both singers and dancers in the main roles. * Stylistic variations have emerged and evolved since the Italian Renaissance. Early variations are primarily associated with geographic origin. Examples of this are Russian ballet, French ballet, and Italian ballet. Later variations include contemporary ballet and neoclassical ballet. Perhaps the most widely known and performed ballet style is late Romantic ballet (or Ballet...

...I recently went to a Grace M. Davis Dance Concert. It was an incredible experience and also very enjoyable. I really liked their choreography and their performance. One of the things that I learned from this experience is that hard work always pays off. If you work hard and put your mind into something, then everything is possible. If you watch those dancers dance, a person can think that they came to this point in couple days and very easily. However, they worked years to become good and skilled dancers. It took them a lot of hard work and many sacrifices. One of the girls in the dance team told me she have been dancing for 4 years and it took her many days and years to work hard be at this point now. They practice everyday and nonstop to understand...

...The director’s vision of the production of Die Fledermaus was “revenge in fun is fun”. Specific moments in the play where this was supported were in act one when Falke convinces Eisenstein to go to Prince Orlofsky’s ball. Falke has planned to get revenge on Eisenstein for humiliating him after a party. Falke is having fun plotting his revenge and this is portrayed by Falke’s demeanor toward Eisenstein. Falke is cheerful and excited when he finally convinces Eisenstein to put off jail until morning and go to the ball with him. Another specific moment that revenge is portrayed as fun is when Rosalinda is having fun at the ball flirting with her husband, all the while Eisenstein has no idea this is his wife. She steals his pocket watch so that she can reveal later that it was her that he was flirting with. All of this, revenge on Esinstein, was being done to entertain the Prince. The idea that Falke was getting revenge on Eisenstein while at a ball that was meant to be fun and entertaining is another element that the director was envisioning “revenge in fun is fun”. The director’s concept of an “Austrian pastry” was visually conveyed by the pastel lighting, as well as the light and happy music. The costumes of the characters conveyed fluffy and sweet because of the type of fabric that was used and the colors of the fabrics. Some of the costumes had glitter which brings to mind sugar. The costumes were also bouncy and swingy illustrating “light and fluffy”. The set was brightly...

...to hate, and there is a time to dance. Dance is one of the most expressional forms of art that has been around for thousand of years. It allows communities to come together, celebrate, to tell a story, and to express emotion. It is an art that requires the use of almost all of the performer's body and soul. It has started wars, and it has brought peace. Dance has changed the world. Two of these styles are Ballet and Jazz, and they have been apart of society and life for many years. When one thinks of beauty and grace in dance, they cannot help but to think of Ballet. In the 15th century, Ballet was first developed in the Italian Renaissance courts. Celebrations like weddings and extravagant parties called for dancing to be an elaborate spectacle. At these events, dancing instructors taught Noblemen and women how to make these events truly memorable by having them participate in the performances. This was the meager beginning of Ballet until Catherine de Medici began to fund ballet in the French court in the 16th century. Catherine de Medici was the wife of King Henry II of France and a great patron of the arts. Catherine would throw elaborate festivals called ballet de cour. Ballet de cour included dance, decor, costume, song, music and poetry. It was a culmination of all the arts to push the advancement of the style of ballet until King Louis XIV helped to popularize and standardize the art form a century later. King Louis XIV was a passionate dancer, and his love of ballet fostered...

...Listed below are the top five choices for cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing, respectively. Cocktail Hour, Number One: “On the Tequila” by Alanis Morissette. This song is off of Morissette’s album Flavors of Entanglement as a bonus track. It differs greatly from the angst-ridden, guitar-shredding tracks of her past. Rather, the persistent beat and varying degrees of electronic notes add a bubbly, fun-loving vibe to the entire song. What makes the song perfect for a casual reception’s cocktail hour is the chorus: “Bring on the tequila / haaaa, ohhhhh / on fire on tequila / haaaa / host is most on tequila / haaaa, ohhhh / bestest friends on tequila”. Cocktail Hour, Number Two: “Cracklin’ Rosie” by Neil Diamond. A party is not a party unless you include a Neil Diamond track. It’s a rule I’ve lived by most of my life. There is nothing quite like seeing guests unconsciously bob their heads or sing along with his epic and well-known lyrics. Even more, this track is an anthem...

...looked around with excitement. Again, I noticed something odd about this wedding. All the participants and guests appeared about four feet high. The "groom" had long hair pinned up with brown lines on her face (was that supposed to be a beard?) The wedding location, a back yard with a swing set and a wading pool, seemed far from romantic. This wedding however was not supposed to be one of those types of weddings. As I pressed the "PLAY" button on the tape recorder I knew that ten 4-6-year-old girls cared deeply about this wedding. Despite the absence of a reason for celebration, I pulled all the girls into the circle and we started dancing and clapping to the music. The energy that went into the preparation on previous days could finally be appreciated. My campers and I not only celebrated the accomplishment of the mock wedding, we celebrated the fun and excitement we experienced for the first three weeks in Camp Glitter Girls. I had begun preparing for Camp Glitter Girls over four months before by budgeting, sending out fliers, confirming registration and finally making sure that every camper would have the time of her life. As I danced, I celebrated the times I almost lost my patience but didn't, the times that I planned activities late into the night because I knew that only an organized schedule would ensure the success of my camp. The lessons I had learned from previous summer camps contributed greatly to this camp's success. At the age of thirteen, I first ran a camp for...

...Truman Capote opens the novel In Cold Blood by outlining the setting in which the story takes place and describing different members of the town of Holcomb. As the reader is introduced to new information, questions begin to evolve. Initially, the author states that “dancing has ceased” within the town, causing the reader to wonder why has the fun/dancing ended? Was there a specific event that changed the town? Naturally, the reader wonders if the described event of a murder is the main reason the “fun has been removed” from Holcomb. Coincidentally, a similar situation happened in the novel Footloose, after the four teenagers were in a deadly car accident; the town changed and “removed fun”. If the shooting in Holcomb did truly have an effect on the townspeople why did some members of the...
