Rhetorical Analysis of An Academy for Woman
Education is an important part in everyone’s life and should be treated as an opportunity.
Back in the seventeenth century women did not have this opportunity to go to school so an author known as Daniel Defoe provides the reader a rhetorical analysis of how women should be able to receive an education and the reader is able to see the uses of Ethos, Pathos and Logos.
First off, Defoe provides Ethos by stating and outside source that provides information to improve his arguments to make it seem more logical. Defoe informs the reader of how he remembered “a passage which I had heard from a very fine woman” (Defoe, pg. 581). Using this woman as an example added more actual information of how women could be so smart and full of potential if they were able to acquire the time to get educated.
Secondly, Defoe places Pathos to the store using emotion. He uses emotion when he states how women were “so delicate, and so agreeable, with souls capable of the same accomplishments with men, and all to be only stewards of our houses, cooks, and slaves” (Defoe, pg. 581). This gives the reader the emotion of being trapped and helpless. Once a human being is aware of what they are capable of they are willing to go out and use their potential and seeing this line of the passage is able to show the reader what losing opportunities to show others who they are can be depressing.

Finally, Defoe uses Logos by explaining logically how “A woman well-bred and well taught, furnished with the additional accomplishments of knowledge and behavior, is a creature without comparison” (Defoe, pg. 580). Of course if you teach someone important manners and educate them properly they are going to be a better person than to a person who is uneducated.
The smarter person is seen as perfect and more reliable so giving women a right to an
