Daniel Plainview (Daniel-Day Lewis) is a man desperately seeing power in society that he initially lacks. In the final scene of There Will Be Blood (2007), Daniel’s true nature is revealed when his first well in Little Boston is destroyed as oil surges out of the ground. Daniel’s goals of achieving success and the extent to which he is willing to work for his success is revealed in this scene. As Daniel watches his well burn to the ground while leaking oil, he comments to Flecher(Ciarán Hinds), his associate that his son is not okay, but Daniel shows no further concern for his son as he spends his time with his well rather than his son. Daniel Plainview is an isolated and dedicated individual who is willing to give up all that he has in order to achieve the success and power of which he dreams. Daniel’s care for H.W. is shown when he rushes to H.W.’s aid first when the accident occurs. Daniel may not be as isolated as initially thought due to the care that he shows when it comes to his son. Daniel’s relationship with his associate Fletcher can be seen as somewhat of a friendship since Daniel is willing to answer the questions that Fletcher has about H.W.’s health. Daniel’s love for H.W. does not prevent Daniel from returning to his well to supervise the men as the stop the fire. Daniel is unable to trust his associates despite the fact that he is willing to have them work for him. He trusts only himself with his future and the potential of his future, so he is unable to let go of the power that he has. Daniel’s inability to let go of his power reveals how Daniel feels as if he is unable to trust anyone other than himself, and if he was to do so, they would be unable to complete the tasks to the extent that he himself is able to
