The scientific method is important in everyday life. Individuals go through the scientific method without even realizing it. For example, when an individual must check the oil in their car, one must first make observations, formulate a hypothesis based on those observations, then perform the fix/experiment, then record the results. In lab number two, Daphnia organisms will be placed in water, a caffeine solution, and an alcohol solution, and for each solution the Daphnia is placed in, the organism will be observed and the heartbeat will be recorded.
Making these observations will allow an insight to how the organism and other organism are affected by both caffeine and alcohol. Like humans, will the Daphnia be sluggish after being exposed to alcohol and …show more content…
With knowledge of over 100 species, these diverse creatures are adept swimmers with ten appendages. (NCBI, Intro). Two of which are for feeding and respiration, another two antennae. Female Daphnia organisms have an visible reproductive organ, the egg sac. If looked upon with a microscope, eggs can sometimes be seen inside of the organ. They inhabit bodies of freshwater, excluding those with extreme climates. (NCBI, Intro). These animals are known for filter feeding, but will occasionally attach to water plants. Commonly called a water flea, this animal is largely unnoticed because of its small size. The daphnia is preyed upon by fish and other creatures of larger size. (NCBI, Intro). This crustacean can range from a size smaller than a half millimeter to six millimeters. (NCBI, Intro). This small size allows for chemicals to quickly take effect, making the Daphnia an optimal creature for experimentation. Furthermore, these animals are transparent, allowing for easy observation of the organs and insides. The carapace, or uncalcified shell encasing its body, it composed of chitin.
