Introduction:
Substances present in the body along with substances added to the body, or loss, can affect heart rate. Chronotopic drugs are able to affect the heart rate in a positive or negative way. Positive additives would increase the heart rate where negative additives would decrease heart rate. In order to compare the difference of certain chemicals on heart rate, a lab testing the effects on a daphnia magna will be performed. A daphnia magna is a flea that lives in water. Five different commonly used solutions will be ingested by five different daphnia magna. These agents affect daphnia magna much like they affect humans. The normal heart rate of each daphnia magna will be recorded before the solution is added, and afterwards …show more content…
The five solutions being tested include aspirin, a diet pill, adrenalin, a sleeping pill, and tea. These are commonly known ingested substances. It is expected that aspirin will decrease the heart rate because aspirin is a blood thinner often used to prevent blood clot formation. Diet pills are expected to increase the heart rate because diet pills contain caffeine, which is a chronotopic agent that increases the heart rate. Adrenalin is expected to increase the heart rate because adrenalin excites the body and gets blood pumping faster which increases blood flow to the heart, increasing heart rate. It is expected that sleeping pills will decrease heart rate because sleeping pills relax the body and help decrease restlessness. A relaxed person will have a lower heart rate than a restless person. It is expected that tea will increase the heart rate because tea contains caffeine, which is a positive chronotopic agent. A positive chronotopic agent is one that increases heart rate. However, tea contains a small amount of caffeine compared to other solutions so an increase is …show more content…
The heart rate for each of the substances increased, except for the sleeping pill. Aspirin had the highest increased, followed by the diet pill, adrenalin, and tea had the smallest increase on heart rate. The sleeping pill had an 11% decrease. Four of the five substances tested were positive chronotopic agents. Aspirin was expected to decrease heart rate and it had the opposite reaction. Aspirin increased the heart rate by 44%. It was expected that aspirin would the decrease heart rate being a blood thinner, where it did the exact opposite because that reason. Since blood thinners prevent blood clot formation, it would allow the blood to flow more rapidly to the heart since there are not as many clots acting as barriers slowing down the process. The diet pill was expected to increase heart rate, and it had a 41% increase in beats per minute. Diet pills contain caffeine, making the heart beat increase since caffeine has a positive effect on heart rate. It was expected that adrenalin would have a positive effect on the daphnia magna’s heart rate, and it did by 26%. Adrenalin excites the body allowing an increase in blood flow to the heart, increasing beats per minute. The sleeping pill increased the heart rate by 11% in the daphnia magna.
