Daphnia shows a lot of similarities to higher crustaceans in their entire morphology, nervous system (Chen et .al 2005). The first antennae are considered to be the main chemoreceptor organ of Daphnia which are sexually dimorphic, long and having an additional flagellum in males but remaining close to the body in females. For example: in Daphnia magna, the first antennae of males are approximately 400 microns long while in females they are about 100 microns long. In Daphnia pulex the antennule length is250um in male and in females remains close to the body but setae length being similar to males being 30 microns long. Daphnia magna have more pronounced first antennules in females and in males the flagellum is heavily ciliated.

It contains 22 ommatidia (with a bilateral symmetry and 11 ommatidia on each side. Neurites of the fused compound eye continue as separate bundles to the lamina .In addition, six fibers (three per body half) exit the ommatidial nerve bundles and target the eye capsule .The optic neuropils are characterized by a cellular cortex and an inner neuropil . The tectum is a paired structure with two lateral neuropils The paired antennule is located at the ventral margin of the rostrum. There are also some neuronal cells present in the most distal region of the antennule. These cells are enclosed by a cuticular elevation from which nine cuticular tubes, the aesthetascs, arise . The neurites of the neuronal cells give rise to a nerve bundle projecting along the ventral rostral ridge of the antennule to the deutocerebrum by passing through an accumulation of large cells with secretory characteristics located above the labrum. A pair of bulged cells are located anteriorly to the fibers arising from the sensory cells of each antennule and connects to the deutocerebrum. Daphnia possess two compound eye anlagen but during ontogeny , the visual system appears as two different units but later the two lamina neuropils fuse medially to form paired compound eyes . The tectum formerly referred to as the medulla forms the second optic neuropil and lies adjacent to the lamina. The tectum does not fuse during embryogenesis but remain as ap paired structure . The compound eye consist of a total of 22 ommatidia . From ommatidia , seven nervous fibers projecting into the laminar neurpil .All of the neuritis originating from the ommatidia terminate in the same region of the lamina neurons in a retinotopic manner . The tract connects the visual system to the brain which is known as the optic tract, which is adjacent to the tectum and enters the posterior region of the protocerebrum
