...avenue. Clattering trucks moved with indistinctness through it. The child stood dreamily gazing. After a time, a little dark-brown dog came trotting with an intent air down the sidewalk. A short rope was dragging from his neck. Occasionally he trod upon the end of it and stumbled. He stopped opposite the child, and the two regarded each other. The dog hesitated for a moment, but presently he made some little advances with his tail. The child put out his hand and called him. In an apologetic manner the dog came close, and the two had an interchange of friendly pattings and waggles. The dog became more enthusiastic with each moment of the interview, until with his gleeful caperings he threatened to overturn the child. Whereupon the child lifted his hand and struck the dog a blow upon the head. This thing seemed to overpower and astonish the little dark-brown dog, and wounded him to the heart. He sank down in despair at the child's feet. When the blow was repeated, together with an admonition in childish sentences, he turned over upon his back, and held his paws in a peculiar manner. At the same time with his ears and his eyes he offered a small prayer to the child. He looked so comical on his back, and holding his paws peculiarly, that the child was greatly amused and gave him little taps repeatedly, to keep him so. But the little dark-brown dog took this chastisement in the most serious way, and no doubt considered that he had committed some grave crime, for he wriggled...

...story of A Dark Brown Dog begins even before the first word is read on the page. Its ingenious and creative title brings to mind an image of what the story will be focused on, a dark brown dog who represents a man who has recently be freed from the chains of slavery. Stephen Crane writes a comprehensive description of this little dog and its experience of being taken in by a little boy. The amount of symbolism used throughout this essay is staggering, and is the main literary element used in this piece of work. Written in 1890, this story represents the period of time that came shortly before. The dog, the boy, and the father all act as important symbols in this classic retelling of the reconstruction period know as Jim Crow. Jim Crow was the period of time in the United States after the Civil War. Slaves had been emancipated, and equality was supposedly underway. Unfortunately that was not the truth of what really went on in the United States. Many blacks were either still kept as slaves, or subjugated into a serf like state. The dark brown dog, which the story derives its title from, enters the story and takes on the role of a former slave. He is seen in the beginning as walking down the road, tripping over the long piece of rope tied around his neck. This piece of rope is symbolic of the former slavery which he just became free of. However, it is impossible to do anything with that freedom because now the dog has nowhere to live; the dog is forced to...

It was published in a New York City newspaper in 1905 and in a collection, The Four Million, in 1906 The Magi were the so-called three wise men from the east who traveled to Bethlehem, following a bright star, to present gifts to the infant Jesus. The term magi (singular, magus) come from the Greek word magoi, a rendering of a Persian word for members of a priestly caste. The Gospel of Matthew (Chapter 2, Verse 11) says: "And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him: and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh." These offerings, though valuable, were not as important as the recognition, respect, and love they gave the Christ child. Frankincense was used as a treatment for illness and as an fragrant additive to incense. Myrrh was also added to incense, as well as perfume, and found additional use as an ointment. The three wise men have been identified in western tradition as Balthasar, king...

Several other early sources also use this variation. As the use of typewriters grew in the late 19th century, the phrase began appearing in typing and stenography lesson books as a practice sentence. Early examples of publications which used the phrase include Illustrative...

...Dogs are marked by loyalty and their intimate relationships with human. In the two short stories ‘To Build a Fire,’ written by Jack London, and ‘The Dark Brown Dog,’ written by Stephan Crane, both writers use ‘dog’ to portray the nature of human when they face a limit of civilization. These portrayals express naturalism clearly by applying characters’ relationship to their surroundings. To begin with, both stories show how savage-like their main characters become through the dog. In the case of ‘To Build a Fire,’ the man at first thinks of the dog as a company. However, as the man involves in a desperate situation, really dying of the cold, he thinks of dissecting the dog to use it for warmth. This type of action would have never happened if the man was set in a civilized background, but such desperate measure influence the man to take animalistic approaches. Similarly, in ‘The Dark Brown Dog,’ the dog by being reticent shows the violence of human. Not only the child, but the family as a whole beats the dog just because of their mere sudden emotions. One thing to keep in mind about this story is that the family is a part of the lower society, where there exists a lack of civilization, in terms of sophisticated minds. Comparing these two stories, I could tell both writers showed all humans have an inner potential of violence when in uncivilized conditions. Although it is true that both stories fundamentally depict naturalism in their stories, there exist many differences...

Her hands went out to take the cup but snapped back in when Mistress Sarah yelled, “Stop at once! You fool! Tea is only for civilized human beings! Not a negro like you!” Rachel set the pot of tea by Sir John and ran out into the fields where her mother was picking cotton with a few other Africans. She spotted her mother and hugged her. “What’s happened?” asked her mother stroking her braids. “Oh Mother!” said Rachel wrapping her arms even tighter around her. “Rachel!” yelled Sir John. “Go...

...difficult and hard to deal with. However for me as a young child, I was afraid of dogs, falling, and the darkness. Being afraid of dogs was one of my biggest fears. One day I was walking down the street from school and I felt like I had walked upon one of the biggest dogs I had ever seen. The dog stood behind a gate taller than I. It looked at me standing there nerves and shaking. As I look at his sharp teeth and him foaming at the mouth as if I was a full course meal. As he started to bark I felt something warm run down my leg. Every time a dog would bark at me I get scared. Another big fear of mine was a fear of leaves. There are a lot of things out there to be afraid of, and there seem to be phobia about falling of the of the roof or a bridge. As I got older, my parents told me to look down whenever I was surrounded by leaves and jump up and down and crash them all. And it would be just like killing them. It took me a long time to get over my fear but it worked. I am also afraid of the dark. I could not sleep in my room without leaving the light on. When I went to sleep in the dark, I started to imagine things like monsters and other things that would scare me. To me a monster was something that would eat you alive and not care. I was afraid that it would write my parents a note with my blood on the wall, and tell them that it took me. I hated being all alone in the dark; it made me afraid to sleep in my room. I would run and get in the bed with...
