“A solution to the failing American School system in the form of a data gathering information systems”

DATA-DRIVEN SCHOOLS
MIS - Fall 2012 The case discusses the problem of the American school system falling behind those from other countries as well as the raising gap in test scores within the unsystematic American public school system; between “Green Zone” students, who are classified as white and wealthy students, and “Red Zone” students who are classified as poor and minority students. The case presents an information system (DDS - Decision Support type of information system) as a solution, to monitor real time results of test scores, grades, reading, writing, and various school related activities. This information system will allow teachers to evaluate reoccurring deficiencies and proficiencies in students, the ability to recognize a deficiency will allow the educator to develop a specific system to tackle those deficiencies and improve the student’s performance. The ability to recognize proficiencies will allow the educator to develop a specific system to further challenge the excelling students to improve his/hers current talents and scores. The case presents an argument from parents of “Green Zone” students which states that more funds are being used on helping “Red Zone” students close the gap amongst students, rather than help “Green Zone” excel in their studies. Results are presented which shows that the DDS actually improved the test scores of “Red Zone” students by identifying the problem they have early in their school career and addressing it in a way which helps them overcome those education related problems.
