Date rape is a subset of acquaintance rape where non consensual sex occurs between two people who are in a romantic relationship. It is critical we begin to understand this issue because abusive experiences during a relationship may interrupt normal development processes.” (V.I Rickert and C.M. Wiemann 167)

...Rorie Printup CRJU 3402 Research Plan Alcohol and Rape on College Campuses Statement of Interest Many studies look at rape and alcohol on college campuses separately, while others look at the effect that alcohol has on rape. It is estimated that one fifth to one fourth of all women experience a completed or attempted rape during their four to five year college career (McMahon 2010). Too many women are victimized on a daily basis on college campuses, a place people go to better themselves, all while believing they are safe. Reality is, rape can happen to any woman, at any time, on any campus. There are classes given on almost every campus about to how women should protect themselves from violent acts such as rape, but how many women actually attend? What are women’s actual perceptions on rape on campus? Are women aware of the risk of rape on campus? What effects does alcohol have on the chance of committing a rape, and what effects does it have on the probability of getting raped? The objective of the paper is to find out how much women really know about the chances of getting raped, the proper way to protect their selves from getting raped, and what effect drinking can have on rape. ...Date Rape "Date rape", often referred to as acquaintance rape, is an assault or attempted assault usually committed by a new acquaintance involving sexual intercourse without mutual consent. The term date rape is widely used but can be misleading because the person who commits the crime might not be dating the victim. Rather, it could be an acquaintance or stranger. Drugs used by Attackers: Drug-facilitated date rape is the use of drugs to assist the attacker in a rape. The drug can be any substance that is physical or mind altering. Drug facilitated sexual assault (DFSA), which is considered an umbrella term for crimes such as drug-facilitated date rape, differs from many rapes in that it is not typically a crime of physical violence but rather of sexual hedonism and entitlement. Though flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) is often cited as a date rape drug because of its high potency, strong effects and the ability to cause strong amnesia during its duration of action, investigations into its actual use as a date rape drug have contradicted popular belief. According to research conducted by Michael Robertson from the San Diego Medical Examiner's office and Dr. Mahmoud El Sohly of El Sohly Laboratories, test results indicated that flunitrazepam was only used in around 1% of reported date rapes according to Robertson and 0.33% according to urine lab tests done by El Sohly. In fact, the benzodiazepines midazolam and temazepam were the two most common benzodiazepines utilized for...

...that victim are four times greater for a college female student than for any other age group. The phenomenon of date rape is not new, however it has evolved into a communication phenomenon, in which communication about sex and rape, the negotiation of consent, the rape itself, the aftermath of rape and the reaction to date rape, are central to defining a rape culture on campus. Women have been muted in a multitude of ways, including the methods in which women tell stories, through male-controlled media, in ways women’s bodies are portrayed and analyzed, and through censorship of women’s voices. Rape is a horrible experience, so why would women keep quiet about it. Campus cultures perpetuate the `culture of silence` that exists among young men and women by fostering a culture of rape which silences experiences and advocates victim blaming (self blame) that is set ablaze by the social acceptance of rape myths, experiences not being defined as rape, secondary rape, and the absence of deterrence, all of which create an underlying tolerance towards rape. In this paper I will examine how women are affected by the rape supportive culture that exists on campuses and creates an internalization of self blame are muted before, during, and after the experience of date rape. Both male and female students contribute to muting women, thus perpetuating a rape culture in which rape becomes an expectation, or part of the social milieu. Only a male dominated society that trains men to use women...

Acquaintance Rape

...The Impact of Acquaintance Rape for Female College Students Word Count: 3,027 Abstract Acquaintance rape, commonly referred to as "date rape," is sweeping across college campuses throughout the United States. Described as nonconsensual sexual contact achieved by force, manipulation or coercion between two people who know each other, it is a form of sexual violence that had been given little attention prior to the 1980’s. Recent studies indicate that one in four female college students will be the victim of acquaintance rape at some time during four years of college making it the fastest growing crime against females in college institutions. However, because there are widespread false impressions among all college students that acquaintance rape does not exist, is not “really rape” or is not a serious crime, many believe that it is not as traumatic to the victim as rape by someone unknown to them. These erroneous beliefs often leave the victims of acquaintance rape more devastated than the rape action itself. The purpose of this paper is to examine the facts surrounding female acquaintance rape on college campuses and the role that crisis intervention techniques play in the recovery from an experience that many experts describe as crippling. The Impact of Acquaintance Rape for Female College Students Every two minutes someone in the United States is raped, and the chance of the victim being a female college student is four times greater than that of any...

Social Justice Research Paper

...For my Social Justice Paper I will be researching Abortion in the two religions Christianity and Judaism. For Christianity I selected to research the Roman Catholic branch of Christianity. Abortion is not a modern issue. It dates back to the early days of religion, where the Ancient Jews believed that God created the child in the mother, and brought it to life. The Palestinians, and later, the Greeks and Romans practiced infanticide, sacrifice and abortion. In the Roman Empire, a child had no legal status until accepted by the head of the family. The anti-abortion stance of the Catholic Church began in its early days (The Teachings of the Twelve Apostles) states "You shall not procure abortion. You shall not destroy the newborn child". College Students Engaging in Risky Behavior

...How many of you are under 21 and drink? I’ve heard that college is supposed to be the best four years of your life—we have classes that assign heavy workloads, work-study during the week, on the weekends we get to let loose and “turn up”, and that we will meet some of the best people here, along with finding out who we really are. Some of us think college is like what movies portray them; everybody’s drinking, smoking, and partying, with very little studying and barely any homework. The realities of college don’t set in until students encounter the coursework that presumably consume their time. Until then, college students tend to have more fun than they usually would back home because of the lack of parental supervision. During the first few weeks of college, students, especially freshmen, are at the highest risk of alcohol-related harm. With the pressures of classes and social acceptance, freshmen feel more anxious about making their way into the college life. "We see a spike then because anxiety is high, and the rigors of coursework haven't yet taken hold” (Cleveland). The drinking problem starts with the way college is portrayed—as a life that revolves around alcohol. Freshmen come in expecting it to be that way, so behave that way, the excessive drinking and reckless behavior are all mirrored from movies and media. According to national surveys conducted by Harvard School of Public Health, 44 percent of all college students binge drink and many suffer alcohol-induced...

Abortion

...Lavon Russell Joannah Bruscell English 120 - Advanced Composition 08 January 2015 Abstract The purpose of this research paper is to highlight the benefits of allowing the freedom of choice on abortion to continue. The main debate is whether abortion is moral or immoral. One of the great things about being human is to have individual thoughts and opinions. That is something that will never change. In this paper, I will first discuss what abortion is as well as its origin. With the use of various sources, I will showcase statistics that lend support to how I came to the determination that abortion should remain legal. These statistics will include abortion rates in the United States vs. the rest of the world, how income or poverty levels affect abortion, and individual frequency of abortion. Abortion is arguably the most highly debated topic in our society today. Also, despite there being many social issues that divide our country, abortion remains to be the most divisive to date. Abortion is the pre-birth termination of a fetus at different stages of pregnancy before life is self-sustainable while still in the mother’s womb. The backbone of the United States has and will always be that all people are created equally and that every person has “certain unalienable rights by their Creator”. Declaration of Independence has been the defense certain rights such as free speech, religion, the right to bear arms, the right to a trial, etc., but it is not limited to...
