David “Davy” Crockett David Crockett was a frontiersman, folk hero, congressman, and Alamo defender. He was one of the most celebrated and mythologized figures in history. His biographers often said there were two David Crockett’s; David, the congressman and frontiersman and Davy, “the larger-than-life” folk hero. For this reason, he appeared in many books and a series of almanacs. Davy was a loving father, son, and husband. Even though he did not have much success as a congressman, he still had an impact in the wars. Davy was born on August 17, 1786, in East Tennessee around the Nolichucky River. He was the fifth child out of nine. His mother was Rebecca and his father was John Crockett. …show more content…
Crockett enlisted as a scout in Francis Jones' Company of Mounted Rifleman during the Creek War. He served until December 24, 1813. A year has passed and Davy re-enlists as Third Sergeant with the Tennessee Mounted Gunman to help with removing the British forces from the state Florida. David changes his course and enters politics. He moved his family to Lawrence County. There he is appointed County Justice of Peace. Further into politics, he runs for a seat in the Tennessee General Assembly representing Lawrence and Hickman counties. He then became known for strong anecdotal oratory skills. He then picks his life and family and moves to Carroll County and again runs for a seat in the Tennessee General Assembly representing the counties of Carroll, Humphreys, Perry, Henderson, and Madison. He served until November of 1824. After running unsuccessfully in 1825, Crockett wins a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives by defeating Adam Rankin Alexander. Crockett serves until March 3, 1829. He then runs again and defeats Rankin for the second time and serves until March 3, 1831. Crockett loses his reelection campaign to William Fitzgerald. Crockett then beats him in 1833, however, serving in the House of Representatives until 1835. He is then defeated by Adam Huntsman. Being done with politics, Crockett wrote a book. It is called “A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett.” He spent time trying to promote his book

Make Sure You'Re Right, Then Go Ahead

...Red Feather Journal 73 “Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead”: The Davy Crockett Gun Craze by Sarah Nilsen In April 2005, sixty thousand members of the National Rifle Association gathered in Houston, Texas for their 134th Annual Meeting. The keynote speaker for the event was embattled U.S. House Majority Leader, Representative Tom De Lay. After his speech, De Lay was joined on stage by Lee Hamel dressed as Davy Crockett in full buckskin attire and a coonskin hat. Hamel presented De Lay with a handcrafted flintlock rifle that he had made for the event with his mentor, Cecil Brooks. The presentation of the reproduction rifle to De Lay is part of a long NRA tradition that began in 1955 when Walt Disney‟s Davy Crockett series first appeared on television. When Charlton Heston received his handcrafted flintlock rifle in 1989, he uttered his famous words, “From my cold dead hands.” President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney also joined the list of those who received facsimile Davy Crockett flintlock rifles from a man dressed in Crockett buckskin attire. This tradition is part of the NRA‟s efforts to represent the gun as a key instrument in the founding of the United States. It secured this ideological representation in part by appropriating the mythology of early American heroes like Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett became emblematic of the gun mythology of early American life. This mythology was synergized by the NRA and popularized through children‟s television...
