This paper contains information on the assessment of Davis County, Utah. To give you a small image in your mind to start with; Utah has the youngest population, the most households consisting of married couples with children, the most stay at home moms, 2nd highest fertility rate and is mostly white. The following is a map of Davis County.

Population of Davis County as of 2012 was 315,809. The majority of the population is male with a male to female ratio of 50.2:49.8. Davis County is a predominately white area with 93.2% of the population being white. The average age of the Davis County population is 26.8. The average household income is 69,147. The unemployment rate in 2010 was 5.3%. 6.6% of the population lives in poverty. The current amount of college students is 14,267. 1,758 people received SS in 2006. There were 5,590 births and 1,211 deaths in 2012. The primary language in this county is English. Meaning this is a population of young white people.
92.1% of this population is LDS. The LDS church creates a culture itself. With such a high percentage practicing the same religion, many of the members of this county have a similar, conservative life style. This culture views health as something very important. The LDS church has something called the word of wisdom, which advises against alcohol and drugs. Due to the word of wisdom many people turn to prescription medication. This is how many people deal with anxiety, stress and depression in Davis County. Anti-depressants are very popular in Davis County. Another way that this culture affects health care is in terms of blessings. Many patients in a health care setting will ask for a blessing from their priesthood holders. Davis County was reported number six on the list of 101 top counties for best general health for ages 1-5.
Within this highly LDS culture, marriage is seen to be eternal for those who are sealed in an LDS temple. The average Utah female first marries at age 22.7. Heterosexual marriage is considered “right”. A typical family in Davis County consists of a mother, a father and children. The statistics show that women in Utah have an average of 2.5 children. Men are expected to be the bread winner, while the wife is expected to stay home and raise the kids. Often times the men are the decision makers. Hopefully this gives a picture of Davis County’s conservative culture.
Disaster:
Davis County has many places to find information on emergency preparedness and disaster planning. Davis County government has a plan and a role in each phase of emergency management; preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. There is even a link through the government page on how to create a personal 72 hour kit. Davis County is right along the fault line and has been told to prepare for many years for a big earthquake. Utah has even had an earthquake drill for every one across the Wasatch Mountains. Among the smaller things that Davis County has had to deal with is drought, flooding, and fire. Parts of Davis County are right on the Wasatch Mountains and this causes an increased danger when fire strikes. The LDS church encourages its members to work on emergency preparedness. They hold classes on how to prepare and what to prepare. Their prophet talks about preparing for disaster. The community has continuing education classes on emergency preparation. Around the community there are many stores that are centered on emergency preparation. Preparing for an emergency is held in high regard to this community. Food and water storage is often talked about around the community. Although Davis County could be greatly affected by a disaster, the LDS church has a program to help clean up communities of disaster. The LDS church also has a location called Welfare Square that has anything you could image and the church would be more than happy to distribute these items out in a time of need. Bountiful High School, located in Davis County, has a bomb shelter that is also stocked with supplies. This shelter would be opened if there ever became a time of need. If there is an earthquake there will be a lot of structural damage. New buildings have certain criteria to meet so that the building would be more likely to withstand an earthquake, but many of the old building do not meet the code in terms of ability to withstand an earthquake. There are many LDS church building in Davis County, those along with schools could be, as well as have been, used as a shelter in time of need. A natural disaster in Davis County could very well affect the water supply. People are encouraged to store water and learn how to purify water from natural sources. Throughout Davis County there are many people who can assist in an emergency. Nursing staff, fire fighters, law enforcement, public works, and public health are all people who are able to help during an emergency. Local fire departments and law enforcement are very quick to respond. There is a chain of command and each of these groups above has a representative that will be notified in the time of an emergency and then that representative will be responsible to notify the person below them and so on. The local hospitals have created plans as to which patients will go where. There are some hospitals that are better fit to treat certain things and therefore if able to transport, there are plans as to who will be treated in which places. Depending on the roads, some hospital employees have been designated to go to certain hospitals if not able to get to the hospital where they are employed. Due to where Davis County is located, it has hazards such as lakes and rivers. There are many drowning’s, accidents, and flooding. With the various seasons come different dangers of weather events. The mountainous surroundings expose members of this community to many poisonous plants and animals. Hiking, climbing, and camping are popular activities and sometimes results in the rescue team being called. There are many outdoor activities to participate it.
