Remembering the University’s first mascot

Before UT alum Stephen Pickney gathered $124 in 1916 to purchase a Longhorn steer in the Texas panhandle that would become a symbol of Texas athletics for over 90 years, there was a first mascot—one that very few remembers.
Pig Battle.
He wasn’t a pig, though. Rather a scrappy tan and white Pit Bull Terrier and he came to Texas two years earlier than the lovable mascot we know today as Bevo.
Former University Co-op Society leader, L. Theo Bellmont was the man responsible for the first mascot of the university. Athletic director and co-founder of the Southwest Athletic Conference, Bellmont brought the American Pit Bull with him to work. The scrappy dog would follow his owner to work, chasing squirrels, running through bluebonnets, and garnering the attention of thousands of students.
After a few years on the sidelines at home and away athletic events, Pig was officially made a University of Texas Letterman. He couldn’t wear a letter jacket, of course, so instead sported a custom, shiny brass “T” attached to his collar. He was the first “Varsity Mascot.”
His name, unusual to us now, made plenty of sense then. Being the athletic man he was, Bellmont named his pet after Texas football center Gus “Pig” Dittmar. Dittmar was known for slipping through the defensive line “like a greased pig.” During a game in 1914, Pig’s first year attending games, the athlete and the dog stood next to each other on the sideline. The students noticed, of all things, that both were bowlegged, and from that moment on, the two would forever be linked to each other.
But all great things must come to an end.
After nine years of being on the sideline, Pig was struck by a Model T (Yup, it was this long ago) on New Year’s Day 1923, right in front of the Co-op stands today (corner of 24th and Guadalupe streets). He appeared to only be injured, but two days later he died.

On January 5, 1924, Pig’s body lay in state in front of the University Co-op. Thousands lined up besides Pig’s black casket, adorned with orange and white ribbons and carried by the Texas Cowboys. His funeral was led by the Varsity Band and the eulogy given by Dean Thomas Taylor, founder of the School of Engineering. “Let no spirit of levity dominate this occasion,” the dean said, “a landmark has passed away. I do not know if there is a haven of rest to which good dogs go, but I know Pig will take his place by the side of the great dogs of the earth.”

The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas

...Bruno had imagined a great adventure ahead. All in all, it seemed like a very sensible plan and a good way to say goodbye… but what Bruno didn’t know is that things would become excessively out of hand. The next day Bruno got up to find out it was raining. Oh drats, Bruno thought. What if it rains all day and I get my new shoes all muddy? Then when I stomp in them, the sides won’t light up. Bruno, sad at the thought of ruining his new shoes, dragged his body out of bed, got dressed, and went through his usual morning. He ate his breakfast of Lucky Charms with his irritating older sister, went to school with Herr Liszt, got lunch (which was spaghettios with gold fish and sour cream) and ended the day with Herr Liszt, who was droning on about a piece of literature with stupid sparkling vampires, teenage romance, and car accidents killing angtsy teens while Bruno was coloring in his Hello Kitty’s Island Adventure coloring book. When his lessons were done and Gretel stole his coloring book to make paper airplanes, Bruno decided to go visit his friend, Shmuel. He put on his helmet, boots, biker’s cape and headed out to his motorcycle. Bruno loved his motorcycle more than almost anything. It was a birthday present from the Fury (whom he did not like very much, but at least he gave good presents.) It was painted jet black and had ghostly skulls painted across it. Black wasn’t particularly his choice of color, but the skulls were neat. Once outside, Bruno walked to the...

Cheetahs

...An essay on cheetahs 'Brilliant', 'Quite Good', 'What?', these are just some of the comments made recently in the press regarding cheetahs. I find my self constantly drawn back to the subject of cheetahs. While it is becoming a hot topic for debate, it is important to remember that ‘what goes up must come down.’ It still has the power to shock the over 50, who are likely to form a major stronghold in the inevitable battle for hearts and minds. Relax, sit back and gasp as I display the rich tapestries of cheetahs. Social Factors Society begins and ends with cheetahs. When blues legend 'Bare Foot D' remarked 'awooooh eeee only my dawg understands me' [1] he could have been making a reference to cheetahs, but probably not. While the western world use a knife and fork, the Chinese use chopsticks. Of course cheetahs cleary plays a significant role amongst the developing middle classes. Primarily cheetahs builds trust among the people. Society is powered by peer pressure, one of the most powerful forces in the world. As long as peer pressure uses its power for good, cheetahs will have its place in society. Economic Factors Our world is driven by supply and demand. We will study the Custard-Not-Mustard model. For those of you unfamiliar with this model it is derived from the Three-Amigos model but with greater emphasis on the outlying gross national product. Renaissance

...Harlem Renaissance An African-American cultural movement of the 1920’s centered in Harlem, that celebrated black traditions, the black voice, and black ways of life. Jazz and music Jazz was a new style of music created by African American musicians, featuring syncopated rhythms and improvisational solos It was so interesting because the improv aspect meant that no two performances could ever be the same Duke Ellington turned commercial radio into a place for music by performing jazz music from the Cotton Club, broadcasted to thousands of Americans Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday coined blues and jazz vocal solos Chick Webb (King of Swing) saved money as a paperboy to buy his drum set, and started playing professionally in Harlem at 11 years old, then later became the best-regarded band leader Louis Armstrong played jazz music on Broadway, a Creole Jazz Band, and at the Cotton Club. He played in many films and toured internationally. He was the man that made the most Americans begin to accept jazz into their culture II. Poetry Langston Hughes One of the most well known names of the Harlem Renaissance His writing reflected that black culture should be celebrated because is it just as valuable as white culture "I tried to write poems like the songs they sang on Seventh Street...(these songs) had the pulse beat of the people who keep on going." said Langston One of Langston most famous work was his essay entitled "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain"...

I Adore Life

...The leaves are turning brown again. Cool and brisk, the wind blows up the torn sweater the old man wears. Visibly shaking and uncertain of his surroundings, he’s a husk of his former self. His eyes dilate, his face is melting. Literally melting. He collapses into a small dirty heap, his eyes shut and a final breath escapes his lips. A young boy walks by and asks for money, he too broke and dirty. Another shows up and prods his silent corpse. This is where our story begins. Set in Detroit, MI during the great recession, it’s a story based on the collapse of the withering economic catastrophe known as the Automotive Industry. I would like to ask for a possibility to build a film around the concept of the desolation felt in that town and of this place. But with only $500 in hand and an old VHS video recorder, there’s only so much I can create with these limited resources. It’ll be set in front of a Party Plus Market Off of Wyoming St, an area of town notorious for its high and violent crime rate. Its daring for sure, but I wish to capture the true feeling of a desperate environment in one of the most violent and crime riddled cities in America. If there’s a chance to negotiate an advance of at least $1000 to put towards filming expenses, it’d be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. EXT. LIQUOR STORE: It’s dark outside. Bill Clinton

...CLinton In this essay I will consider the social, economic and political factors of Bill CLinton. Underestimate Bill CLinton at your peril. Indispensable to homosapians today, it is yet to receive proper recognition for laying the foundations of democracy. It is an unfortunate consequence of our civilizations history that Bill CLinton is rarely given rational consideration by those most reliant on technology, who form the last great hope for our civilzation. In the light of this I will break down the issues in order to give each of them the thought that they fully deserve Social Factors While some scholars have claimed that there is no such thing as society, this is rubbish. When blues legend 'Bare Foot D' remarked 'awooooh eeee only my dawg understands me' [1] he failed to understand that if one seriously intends to 'not judge a book by its cover', then one must read a lot of books. Both tyranny and democracy are tried and questioned. Yet Bill CLinton raises the question 'why?' Nothing represents every day life better than Bill CLinton, and I mean nothing. If society has a favourite child, it is Bill CLinton. Economic Factors Derived from 'oikonomikos,' which means skilled in household management, the word economics is synonymous with Bill CLinton. Conflict Examples

...Conflict that I have been involved with is a time when I was in the United States Navy. I was stationed on a surface ship for the first time in my 16 years in the service and been on submarines most of that time stated. My supervisor was in the same way, and this is the first time we had women as subordinates. It made for training in the way we were dealing with people, the ethics we were accustomed too, and our language we normally used. Being the “salty dawg” that my supervisor was, (An E-8, senior Chief Petty Officer) the adjustment was to not just telling them what to do, but assuming that it would get done like on our prior vessels. Some days we can have a bad day and just cuss each other out, but with the personnel we had now we had to show structure that was more known then expressed. So our chain of command knowledge was a very tough line for us. Because when you use to doing things one way for so many years, it’s hard to leave it in a few months. The conflicts really showed itself when the supervisor would go on a tear (again on a bad day, long night) and pretty much lay into people. Many days I would have to go behind him after he went off and explain to him that what he was doing was wrong for the environment we were in. The way I resolved it was to listen to his outbursts and calm him down, and then explain how he made the other subordinates feel. It happened so often that after a while it was like we made it a weekly process. I would observe everyone’s attitudes...
