Two excellent examples of young adult literature that consider the themes of race, ethnicity, and culture are Day of Tears, by Julius Lester and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. These award-winning novels illustrate the fact that the viewpoints of authors who are members of the minority groups about which they write have a unique perspective that can be universally appreciated. That these works of literature have universal appeal is a testament to the writing skills of both authors, as well as to the way in which each of them has blended historical fact and fiction, to paraphrase Mr. Lester in his Author’s Note in Day of Tears (175). Although both novels furnish us with multiple examples of how African-Americans and Native Americans were, and in the case of Diary, still are being mistreated at the hands of the white majority, they nevertheless serve to affirm the fact that the resilience of the children exposed to these horrors transcends a mere discussion of race because resilience is part of the human spirit. Both books are replete with examples proving this thesis. These novels are of recent vintage. Day of Tears was first published in 2005, while Diary was copyrighted in 2007. Both authors are “insiders,” that is to say, they are members of the minority groups that are the subjects of their writing. The book jacket of the paperback edition of Diary proclaims that the work is “inspired by his [Alexie’s] own experiences growing up.” We learn from Lester’s Author’s Note that Day of Tears was inspired by an event mentioned to him by his editor, namely, “The Weeping Time,” which was the nickname for the largest slave auction in the history of the antebellum south (174). The auction earned this nickname, a double entendre, because of the constant rain during the weeklong auction, as well as for the plethora of

Cherokee Indian Stomp Dance

...My great grandfather was part Cherokee Indian. Cherokee Indians have a very unique culture and that culture they have built has been from other culture’s influences. They have traditions and customs that they hold close and practice still to this day. I am going to go into detail about their dances and everything that goes a long with it such as music and their costumes. The Cherokee have many traditional dances, ancient, modern, religious, social and there are some that are no longer practiced. The stomp dance is the most important of all. The stomp dance ritual occurs throughout a time span of a whole day. They prepare for the dance all day long. Creating a fire, cooking food, give sermons, and play stickball, a game resembling...

Tears Idle Tears

...Lowe, D.J Lord Alfred Tennyson’s “Tears, Idle Tears,” On the Edge Lord Alfred Tennyson’s “Tears, Idle Tears,” conveys the complex emotions of one whose life is steadily reaching its end and death is looming over him. He has come to that point in his life where he truly realizes his position. Death is no longer surreal as it once was; however, the speaker is still at peace because he has lived his life. His friends have all gone on and now his own time has arrived. This poem is a lamentation of that person as they are reminded of their past and “of the days that are no more”. The poem’s message is reinforced through Tennyson’s diction and similes, which create many parodies within the poem. However, theses parodies are the keys to the readers’ noticing and understanding the intricate thoughts of one so near to that final breathe. The poem begins with the speaker describing his tears as “idle” and being groundless. Tennyson is not saying that the tears are unmoving or that they are without cause. The speaker may not necessarily be able to admit to the exact reasoning behind the tears, but he knows what causes them to surface, “some divine despair”. Yet despair is not divine; divine means heavenly or celestial. Tennyson means that the focus is on something from above. However, the irony can truly be seen in the physical cause of the tears, “In looking on the happy-autumn fields.” The word autumn implies harvest, almost winter, which signifies an end to something light...

...Tears Bobby walked to school everyday As a trail of tears marked his way He had no friends so his life was quite dim And all the kids teased and liked to pick on him Thrown into lockers pushed on the ground Bobby cried as he stood with a frown They broke his glasses and wrote on his shirt Poor Bobby went home feeling like dirt His mom beat him whenever she was mad And left him alone, hurt and sad Tried to be good and never disobeyed Bobby slept outside, in the cold that day No one could see and no one could hear But Bobby had enough, as he wiped away his tears Filled with hatred and as stiff as a pole But Bobby was shaking from head to sole He went in his room and closed the door As he walked to the corner and knelt on the floor Gasping and sniffing, face full of tears Bang! He was happy. Right then and there The police came to the house, the day after, in fact Bobby’s mom had wept, but it was only an act The cop took off his hat with tears on his face He could barely look, for what a disgrace Sprawled on the floor holding a teddy bear Bobby lay in a pool. Blood mixed with...

Last Christmas

...very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special Once bitten and twice shy I keep my distance but you still catch my eye Tell me baby Do you recognize me Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me Merry Christmas, I wrapped it up and sent it With a note saying 'I love you', I meant it Now I know what a fool I've been But if you kiss me now, I know you'd fool me again Last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special Last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special A crowded room and friends with tired eyes I'm hiding from you and your soul of eyes My God, I thought you were someone to rely on Me, I guess I was a shoulder to cry on A face on a lover with a fire in his heart A girl on a cover but you tore her apart Maybe this year Maybe this year I'll give it to someone special Cause last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special Last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special And last Christmas And this year It won't be anything like, anything like Last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day, you gave...

Healthcare

...spontaneous pneumothorax. Spontaneous pneumothorax could affect a respiratory illness in a patient that is suffering from bronchitis or asthma. This condition usually targets athletic young males who often have good health. Basically, spontaneous pneumothorax is a small tear that causes air to leak out of the lung. Usually if the tear is small the patients lung will collapse a little, however, if it is a significant tear then the entire lung may collapse. For a small tear there is really no treatment involved because the tear should heal over a couple of days. The doctor may prescribe medicine for pain and order an x-ray in a week or two to see if tear has closed. However, a significant tear could cause air to be trapped inside the chest wall. Unfortunately, this air would have to be removed using large syringe, three-way stopcock, and a thin tube that is inserted through the chest wall. The syringe sucks out some air through the tube and the three-way stopcock is turned closing off the tube. The air inside the syringe is then released outside of the body. The doctor may have to perform this a few times to get rid of all the air. Sometimes a larger tube is inserted through the chest wall and is left place for a few days to allow the torn lung tissue to heal. Thankfully, this scary acute lung condition can be quickly treated using these techniques and providing effective results Reference: Kenny, D. T., & Tidy, D. C. Pneumothorax. www.patient.co.uk. Sports Injuries

...Sports Injury Assignment Moira Ijzerman Georgetown District High School Patellar Dislocation What is a Patellar Dislocation? The patella rests in a groove on the anterior aspect of the femur, called the patellofemoral groove (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 2011). Patellar dislocation occurs when the patella (kneecap) slides laterally out of the patella femoral groove where it normally rests (Ebraheim, 2011). Anatomy The patella bone protects the largest joint in the body, the knee (Temertzoglou & Challen, 2003). The knee is made through the union of 3 bones; the femur, tibia and the patella. (Physio Advisor, n.d.). The patella is situated at the anterior aspect of the knee and lies within the patellofemoral groove (Ebraheim, 2011) which, according to Physio Advisor (n.d.) is located on anterior of the femur. The patella is enveloped by the tendon of the quadriceps muscle, and then goes on to attach to the anterior surface of the tibia (Physio Advisor, n.d.). This relationship forms a joint designed to give the quadriceps muscle leverage when extending the knee (Sports Injury Clinic, n.d.). Each of the bones involved is lined with cartilage to allow cushioning between the bones. The patella also has connective tissue known as the patella retinaculum which attaches it on either side of the femur. This joint is known as the patellofemoral joint (Physio Advisor, n.d.). The patella normally lies in the patellofemoral grove and is only designed...

Field of Tears

...Field of Tears - genaflevering Are the horrible memories from the Irish Civil War still lingering in the grass on the field? What does the tears of the grandfather symbolize? “Field of Tears” is a short story written by Declan J. Connaughton in which he tells the story about an old man and his granddaughter called Rita. She frequently comes to visit him at the nursing home where he has to stay against her will, simply because he is too old and weak. She knows this and it’s also one of the reasons why she goes to see him that often, to spend time with him before it’s too late which makes every second she has with him precious. Rita wants to take him out for a drive and the grandfather guides her to a field he remembers from when he was stationed during the Civil War. As he sits in the car facing the sea, he starts to recall a memory from the field and suddenly Rita isn’t there anymore but his comrades from the war are. “Field of Tears” is a historical fiction short story that follows a man who took part in the Irish Civil War which followed the Irish War of Independence, where the Irish people fought for the right to be an Irish Republic. England wouldn’t let them have their will but they made a treaty that ended the British rule in most of Ireland. This wasn’t satisfying enough for some of the Irish republicans that didn’t want to take part in the “Provisional Government”, who supported the treaty and this lead to a civil war between these two opposing groups. The story...

Writing to Remember

...found dead on his parent’s couch. He overdosed on what we now know to be Xanax and painkillers. His heart just stopped. The instant I heard those words come out of his mother’s mouth, I think my heart stopped as well. I felt it shatter into five million tiny pieces, build itself back up, and shatter again five million more times. “Why would God, my God, allow for such a horrific thing to happen to such a beautiful person?” is the question that kept running through my confused mind. “Why BT?” I thought to myself, “Why now?” In the days that followed, I experienced a pain I had never knew existed. In comparison to child birth, it was much, much worse. This was an internal pain. A pain that no amount of medication could ever cure. According to everyone around me, this was a pain that only time could heal, but in my eyes, I would be lucky if time could even heal any part of this. In the days that followed, I endured more headaches, heartaches, tears, and sickness than lots of people experience in a lifetime. I attended the viewing, but I wasn’t...

Trail of Tears

...Adsila: Journal Entry from the Trail of Tears There were ten million Native Americans on this continent when the first non-Indians arrived. Over the next 300 years, 90% of all Native American original population was either wiped out by disease, famine, or warfare imported by the whites. By 1840 all the eastern tribes had been subdued, annihilated or forcibly removed to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi (Cherokee By Blood; Trail of Tears, 2003). My name is Adsila, and this is my story. The year is 1839, but just barely. It is the second week of the New Year and cold here in Kentucky. We were all forced to leave our homelands in North Carolina and travel, mainly by foot, to the state of Oklahoma. Some of the elders, the sick and the young, have been permitted to ride in the wagons. Many have died from sickness, and I fear that most of the rest of us will not make it on the rest of this journey, which is only about half over with now (Cherokee North Carolina; Trail of Tears, 2010). Being that I am young, only 12 summers old, I do not understand why we have been forced to leave the lands of our birth. From things that I have heard the elders say, most of the reason we were forced to leave was because of the yellow rocks. The white man wants these rocks, because these rocks bring them money (Cherokee North Carolina; Trail of Tears, 2010) Money that they spend on our lands! The white man has brought nothing but trouble since they first stepped onto our lands. The...

The lady had white hair that looked like she had the worlds tightest curls, she looked like she has had better days the the day she brought her dog to the vets office. She walked into the squared exam room with her dog. I sit and wait for my dog’s name to be called, but the only thing I hear is a loud crying noise from the same exam room the lady with tight curls walked into. Five- minutes had passed and the lady walked out. Her nose was rosey red and she had looked like she was crying. She went to the counter and two people walked out with a brown cardboard box. The lady had to put her dog down. As soon as she saw the cardboard box she just broke down and started to fall to the floor ever so slowly. Meniscus Tear Process

...Knee Injury - Meniscal Cartilage Tear The menisci are cartilage tissues which act like shock absorbers in the knee joint. A meniscus can be torn, commonly after a forceful twisting injury to the knee. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and locking of the knee. Some heal by themselves, but an operation to fix, trim or remove the torn meniscus may be advised. Meniscal cartilage injury The knee is commonly injured in sports, especially rugby, football and skiing. You may tear a meniscus by a forceful knee movement whilst you are weight bearing on the same leg. The classical injury is for a footballer to rotate (twist) the knee whilst the foot is still on the ground - for example, whilst dribbling round a defender. Another example is a tennis player who twists to hit a ball hard, but with the foot remaining in the same position. The meniscus may tear fully or partially. How serious the injury is depends on how much is torn and the exact site of the tear. Meniscal tears may also occur without a sudden severe injury. In some cases a tear develops due to repeated small injuries to the cartilage or to degeneration (wear and tear) of the meniscal cartilage in older people. In severe injuries, other parts of the knee may also be damaged in addition to a meniscal tear. For example, you may also sprain or tear a ligament. Meniscal cartilage does not heal very well once it is torn. This is mainly because it does not have a good blood supply. The outer edge of each meniscus has some blood...

...of the Trail of Tears and the Holocaust The U.S government stole millions of dollars and millions of acres of land from the native americans. Likewise, the Nazi Regime stole the same from helpless Jewish people who were forced to live in ghettos. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning. When the white settlers first came to America they encountered the Native Americans they thought they were savages, and that they were dumb and could easily steal from them. The white settlers moved the Native Americans to oklahoma and in this process they stole from them and killed their livestock. They also killed them and stole their homes while they made the Native Americans walk all the from their homes to Oklahoma. This is very similar...
