Daystar In response to the daily struggle of a mother in the pursuit to find time of her own, Rita Dove, twentieth century poetry, wrote the poem “Daystar.” As a mother you not only struggle to find quiet time, but you also struggle to find personal redemption for all the daily tasks we complete for our families. In the tittle alone “Daystar” we find ourselves invisible to those we take care of regularly. Just like stars during the day, invisible to us due to the sun, our actions are invisible to others because many feel that it is not only our job but our obligation to take care of others. Dove uses descriptive words to allow us to sympathize with the character, also taking us visually through her words of a typical afternoon of a busy mother. Dove starts the poem with the number one struggle for all mothers, quiet time. “She wanted a little room for thinking” (1) searching for a quiet place to melt into your surroundings is all anyone needs to recharge, get your head straight. “But saw the diapers steaming on the line” (2) while attempting to find personal serenity, the first sight was one of her daily chores looking back at her. “A doll slumped behind the door” (3) this is yet another reminder of something she has to pick up and put away. She decides to find a place where there is no reminder of what her days consist of. “So she lugged a chair behind the garage” (4) “to sit out the children’s naps.” (5) Her lugging the chair is an example of the exhaustion she must feel and this is just the middle of her day. She continues to talk about some of the peaceful and interesting things she watches while she is seeking her quiet time. “Sometimes there were things to watch” (6) “the pinched armor of a vanished cricket” (7) “a floating maple leaf. Other days” (8) “she stared until she was assured” (9) when she closed her eyes” (10) “she’d see only her own vivid blood” (11), as a mother viewing nature at its finest isn’t always enough, her closing her eyes and melting into herself really explains to us how much this time to herself meant to her. Being able to visualize and feel her own blood pumping lets readers know that she has found that Zen like serenity she longs for. “She had an hour, at best, before Liza appeared” (12) “pouting from the top of the stairs” (13) as a mother and the reader of this poem I am extremely sympathetic to these lines. Once placing children down for naps, the clock starts ticking. The time goes by so quickly and for most parents nap time is the only time you have that is yours. Just the anticipation of the short time to relax is enough to not allow you to enjoy the moment. “And just what was my mother doing” (14) “Out back with the field mice?” (15) and “Why, building a palace” (16) these are typical questions a mother is used to, never being able to do anything without being questioned as to why. Our children think they need an explanation for everything. Even though we are questioned often it does not make it any less difficult to swallow each time the questions are thrown at you. “Later that night when Thomas rolled over and” (17) “lurched into her, she would open her eyes” (18) with using the word lurched, I visualize her being annoyed by the fact he was invading her space. “And to think of the place that was hers” (20) again referring to the fact that even in bed, a time she should be able to enjoy and relax she is being bothered. “For an hour-where” (21) “she was nothing” (22) “pure nothing, in the middle of the day” refers to the fact that she was able to be alone, not worrying about anything in that one moment. She was just herself, not a caregiver, not a mother, not a wife or any other title the world has placed on her. Alone with her thoughts being able to enjoy and remember the time when she had the time to herself, before she achieved her current status. Mothers everywhere can empathize and sympathize with the character in the poem. Motherhood is a time many women long for but do not realize the true impact it has on our everyday lives. Dove does an incredible job describing and characterizing a mother during a typical afternoon and putting into words exactly how we long for the time, even if it is brief, to just be alone and enjoy the peace of that moment and how we anticipate the next one.

Star Of The Day: A Short Story

...The City was a neon bonfire. The girl's pink hair glowed. She furrowed her eyebrows when she looked down upon her hands. Strange, scrawling inks climbed up and down her palm, twisting and turning about her fingers in an intricate dance. They resembled snakes, or dragons, or jifarins in her mind. She smiled. She hadn’t seen a jifarin in quite some time. She looked up, and saw the Star of the Day begin to rise. Her vision beheld the dark, cool sky – the stars invisible and hidden by the strange lights that mortals have created below – seared away by the glory of the Resplendent Daystar. She smiled as she saw the darkness fight back. The dark blue of the night sprinkled the sky with ash gray blood. In the end, the Resplendent Daystar always won....

Firewalls are commonly deployed between trusted and untrusted networks, for example between the Internet (untrusted) and an organization’s trusted private various network. They [firewalls] can also be used internally to segment an organization’s network infrastructure, for example; deploying a firewall between the traffic was received to determining whether the corporate financial information and the rest of the company network. Deviance

...MEANING AND DEFINITION OF DEVIANCE Sociology defines social deviance as an act of omission or commission of an offense where perpetrators risk facing state prosecution and legal punishment. Therefore, the sociological study of deviance looks at various social laws, their influence on the individual and societal behavior, and potential punishments for lawbreakers. Indeed, Kubrin, Stucky, & Krohn, (2009) note that sociology appreciates the fact that social norms vary in description across societies. This implies that an action that is deviant to one community may be morally acceptable to another. Moreover, sociology recognizes that while societies play a more important role than individuals do in creating and imposing norms and rules. This means that views on deviant acts existing in individuals more likely relate to their society’s responses to the behavior (Kubrin, Stucky, & Krohn, 2009). Norms are rules and expectations by which members of society are conventionally guided. Deviance is a failure to conform to these norms. Social norms differ from culture to culture. For example, a deviant act can be committed in one society that breaks a social norm there, but may be normal for another society. Over the years, sociologists have come up with numerous theories and concepts that help explain the causes, effects, and solutions to deviance. For instance, originally studied at the Chicago School, the social disorganization theory owes its application to deviance as a...

Cerebral Palsy

...INTRODUCTION While cerebral palsy is a blanket term commonly referred to as “CP” and described by loss or impairment of motor function, cerebral palsy is actually caused by brain damage. The brain damage is caused by brain injury or abnormal development of the brain that occurs while a child’s brain is still developing — before birth, during birth, or immediately after birth. Cerebral palsy affects body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. It can also impact fine motor skills, gross motor skills and oral motor functioning. Those with cerebral palsy were most likely born with the condition; although some acquire it later. It was once thought that cerebral palsy was caused by complications during the birthing process. While this does happen, it is now widely agreed that birthing complications account for only a small percentage, an estimated ten percent, of cerebral palsy cases. In my interview with Mrs. Rachel Kagichiri, a parent to a recently diseased CP child, she explained to me that many of the misconceptions we have about the disease should be done away with. Karanja, her son, was often blamed on her ‘negligence’ by relatives and friends who openly thought she must have done something for her son to turn out this way. Current research suggests the majority of cerebral palsy cases result from abnormal brain development or brain injury prior to birth or during labor and delivery. Accidents, abuse, medical malpractice...

Budgets and Budgeting

...38 International Journal of Accounting and Taxation, Vol. 1 No. 1, December 2013 Budgetary Control as a Measure of Financial Performance of State Corporations in Kenya Kenneth Odour Adongo1 Ambrose Jagongo PhD, MKIM2 Abstract The importance of financial stability in enabling an organization to function efficiently and maximize the potential for service delivery cannot be underestimated. The quest for better service delivery under new public management in public organizations in Kenya necessitates the need for public organizations to have proper financial standing in order to run operations and motivate workers through better remuneration as well as improved working conditions. Critique of literature on factors affecting financial performance reveal that gaps remain on the influence of budgetary control on financial performance of public institutions. This study sought to investigate the relationship between budgetary controls and financial performance of state corporations in Kenya. The study sought to determine the salient features of budgetary controls in state corporations, establish the human factors within budgetary controls, establish the process of budgetary control in public organizations, and determine the challenges affecting budgetary control. A descriptive survey design was used to gather data from the state corporation’s managers of the sampled state corporations. 14 corporations were selected from the 138 to participate in the study. Purposive sampling was used...

Effect of Technological Change on the Profitability of Financial Institutions in Kenya

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background The turbulence with which organizations and individuals operate in today’s life leaves changes as the only constant. It is paramount to note that individuals and institutions that choose to meddle through turbulence find it very difficult to survive. Indeed there are many reasons that inspire change. According to McKinley survey on change management (2006) organizations will change to reduce costs, to move from a good performance to a great performance, turn around a crisis situation, and catch up with rivals or to direct part of the organization. In doing so according to Davis and Holland (2006) organizations use systematic methods to ensure that the organizational change is guided in a planned direction, conducted in a cost effective manner and completed within a targeted time frame with desired results. Further Todd A (2008) focuses on the people aspect by arguing that change management is a structured and systematic approach of achieving a sustained change in human behavior within an organization. The success of implementing change is generally associated with those who facilitate the change process. The change agent is defined here as a manager who seeks “to reconfigure an organizations roles, responsibilities, structures, outputs, processes, systems, technology or other resources” (Buchanan and Badham, 1999) in the light of improving organizational effectiveness. The role of...
