I chose to write about Habitat for Humanity. The Christian-based organization’s mission statement is, “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.” (Habitat.org) As a nonprofit organization, volunteers as well as paid staff are called upon to help spread God’s word through the act of giving and Habitat for Humanity is one of the best in the world at it.

As for our chapter readings, the three concepts that stuck out to me the most that would benefit Habitat for Humanity would be outcome, brand, and volunteerism.

Worth defines an outcome as “socially meaningful changes for those served by a program generally defined in terms of expected changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes, behavior, condition, or status.” (Worth, p. 139). Completed, the changes breed outcomes and a sense of accountability that yes, things have changed for that person and/or group of people that the organization was looking to help.

On its website, Habitat for Humanity includes what outcome they hope to have within its mission page. “Our ministry was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety.” They simply want people to have a place to live. It doesn’t have to have five or six bedrooms with five or six bathrooms, but just a place to live that they can be proud to call home and keep them safe. This is ultimately an outcome Habitat wants to reach.

Second, it seems that brand would be a great fit for Habitat for Humanity because if an organization is supposed to sustain itself globally, it needs to be recognizable. “a name, term, sign, symbol, design, or a combination of these that is intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and differentiate them from those of competitors.” (Worth, p. 249).

Habitat’s logo is extremely recognizable worldwide. It includes three people with their arms up giving the sense of excitement underneath a line that represents a roof of a house, which is the premise behind Habitat. The logo is extremely colorful and gives off a feel of energy and excitement and completely separates itself from any potential competitors or other volunteer entities throughout the world. If people recognize a company’s logo, they must be doing something right.

Finally, I chose volunteers for the third concept, but it is probably one of the most important concepts discussed in the entire textbook. Habitat for Humanity builds houses for people who are less fortunate and aren’t able to provide a home for themselves and volunteers build those houses. Sure, there are paid members that run executive boards and payroll accounts, but volunteers get the so-called dirty work completed in the work field.

On page 222, Worth discusses that there are different motivation factors for volunteers and that some may do it because they genuinely love to help others and other volunteers may do it because of outside motives such as a public relations article for their group. Regardless of what their motivation factors are, volunteers are a necessity for Habitat for Humanity to fulfill its mission statement.

God wants us to love and serve one another. 1 John 3:16-18 says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (NIV)

There are many verses in the Bible that tell us we should help and love each other, but this one from John shows us that actions can speak louder than words. What is better than showing somebody you love them by doing something that can change their lives for the better.

The Holy Bible, New International Version (2014).

...the local church can do is become less of an organization and more of an organism. In the Organization of the Church, Towns spends significant time discussing the need for organization of the church, but only gives two sentences to the organism of the church. Towns himself states, “It is a reflection of the life and power of the Lord Jesus Christ who indwells it” (Organization of the Church). The power of Jesus Christ is exposed by vigorously engaging in the example He set for us with His life. The local church should express its power in service to others just as Jesus showed his disciples. Finally, the local church might repent, renew, and, revive as Town’s suggests at the end of chapter 9 (p. 109). A good place to start is at Philippians 2:3-16: which states, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” God used the experience of pride to show humans humility. We as individuals must remember that the Church does not live by the focus and actions of others, but by the focus...

...Traits of Online Learners Christina Kellam ID# L26677261 Discussion Board Forum 2 Final INFT 101 B89 There use to be a time when majority of students would take college courses in a classroom. Now a lot of colleges/universities give the privilege of completing courses at home online. There are more and more students choosing to do online schooling. One of the reasons is due to it being a little bit more flexible with their schedules. What is it that makes online learners successful? Boyd (2004) stated “There may be only certain kinds of students under certain conditions who can successfully learn via the online format” (p. 31). Will only certain students succeed in online courses? I feel that anyone can succeed as long as you have motivation and determination. Taormino (2010) stated in the article “Student awareness of the characteristics, traits, and skills for online learning is an important area of dialogue between the student and learning institution” (p.55). I would have to agree with Taormino about making the students more aware of what all is involved with online courses. I do feel that anyone that is doing work on a computer on a regular basis will improve their skills no matter what their background is within computer skills. Mark Taormino’s article has been summarized with key characteristics along with reflection and application for successful online learning. The first category of characteristics for a successful online learner is Technical Factors...

...Discussion Board Forum 2 Thread BUSI 330 Amazon believes in keeping its marketing plan simple in order to be effective. Consequently, their marketing plan is based upon the 4 P’s (product, price, place, and promotion). Amazon’s product is to provide an unparalleled selection of any item that exists on the planet. Its prices are extremely competitive and often lower than traditional stores and it is more convenient for people to shop on the internet (place) than it is in a physical location. Finally, its promotion emphasizes big ideas, innovation, technology, and customer centricity, enabling it to market itself as the most convenient place for consumers to shop and satisfy their needs (Kerin & Hartley, 2015). This strategy targets Generational Y cohorts and the millennials who will respond to technology-driven promotions. The primary advantage that Amazon has over brick and mortar department stores is the depth of their selection and inventory. Amazon is able to list more goods than a department store would ever be able to store in its building. Consequently, consumers are almost absolutely sure that they will find what they are looking for when they shop at Amazon while they are not sure that their local department store will carry those items. Another advantage that Amazon holds over brick and mortar department stores is the convenience of the shopping process. Customers can research alternatives online far quicker than they could at a physical store. Furthermore,...

Black Market Econ 213 - Db Forum 2.Docx

...Black Market The black market is not a physical place, but rather an economic activity in which merchandise and/or services are bought and sold illegally. Also called the “underground market,” this market gets its name from the activity it conducts out of sight and often outside the sight of law enforcement. The black market or buying and selling of products and services take place often in plain sight. A black economy is a highly organized and a vast market where the regular taxation rules and norms of trade are not adhered to. The variety of goods traded in the black market is enormous and the most commonly traded black market items are weapons, drugs and alcohol at the least. Many factors can make a transaction illegal, thus qualifying it as a black market transaction. The good or service itself may be illegal, such as human trafficking, alcohol, illicit drugs, weapons, or prostitution. One prime example of an illegal market created because of an illegal product was the result of prohibition. After alcohol was outlawed in the U.S. in 1919, it was smuggled into the country and sold at speakeasies and private bars. The result was an era of organized crime and an estimated 500 million US dollars (USD) in lost tax revenues annually. When the demand is strong and gains from trade can be had, markets will develop and exchanges will occur in spite of the restrictions (pg.77). The price of certain goods sold in a black market could be lower than the legal market price. This...

Use online peer-reviewed journal research (case study research is best) to inform your writing, and to advance the theoretical discussion beyond what you encountered in the PowerPoint. You may select a theory that you will eventually use elsewhere in the course (such as in the theoretical paper assignment next week—hint, hint). Your initial post should contain 3 scholarly citations and 3 references minimum (your textbook may NOT serve as a source for this forum). After reviewing this week’s required PowerPoint presentation, the theory I chose to further discuss is complexity theory. According to the presentation, complexity theory is relevant to all traditional fields, focuses on specific questions about parts, wholes and relationships, cuts across all disciplines of science and, is the study of complex systems and understanding their indirect effects (Introduction to the Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Organizational Management, n.d., p. 19). Another more specific definition of complexity theory is that it is the study of “how order, structure, pattern, and novelty arise from extremely complicated, apparently chaotic systems and conversely, how complex behavior and structure emerges from simple underlying rules” (Cooke-Davies et al., 2007, p. 52). Complexity theory and, in turn, complexity...

How sex offenders are monitored, how the police have to be informed if the sex offender has changed address or been away from home for more than seven days and it also covers sexual abuse of vulnerable people with mental disorder. This can help spot abuse within different environments, prevent abuse from occurring and stops sex offenders from abusing again within a matter of weeks. The...

...Discussion Board Forum 1 Adrian R. Castaneda Liberty University BUSI 620 Global Economic Environment Dr. Virgil Mensah-Dartey October 24, 2013 DB FORUM 1 Question 3 Unethical behavior and unlawful behavior are different in a sense that unethical behavior violates integrity, while unlawful behavior violates established laws. When discussing unethical behavior in the business context, one should consider the overall focus of a business; maximize profits for shareholders and owners. The way a business operates to make money can be treated as ethical or unethical. An unethical type of practice in the business world can consist of a business that is determined to make a profit without considering the morale and comfort of their employees (Svensson & Wood, 2008). By failing to have happy employees in your business and over working them to make a profit can cause an ethical dilemma as the employee can see this type of business operation as a way of prioritizing profit over the employee morale. According to Thomas, Schermerhorn & Dienhart (2004) unlawful behavior is actions that breaks established laws or rules that control business practices. This type of behavior can be easier detected over unethical behavior because by violating unlawful behavior, the individual or individuals are violating written laws. For example, giving away insider trading information on a new medicine is a type of unlawful behavior in the business context. Businesses have written guidelines...

Justice BRESLIN[->5] delivered the opinion of the court: Everen Securities, Inc., (Everen) filed suit against defendants A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. We hold that: (1) the arbitration panel did not exceed its authority in considering the issue of trade secret; (2) the evidence does not show that a member of the panel was prejudiced against A.G.
