Socialization agents contribute in ways that convinces us the inequality system is normal and right. Socializing agents teach people what is expected in our society. They teach us what is normal in our society. There are four agents of socialization, which are, family, school, peer groups and mass media. All of these influence the way we teach people. Family is the foundation of the socialization agent. For example, if our religious leaders and parents teach us the men more superior than women and we choose to accept it than inequality persists. In the media people are often taught that wealthy individuals are better than the common person is another form of socialization inequality. 96.8% of all American families own a television. At very young ages, we are being taught how to treat people differently. For example, my favorite show growing up was “Scooby Doo”, by watching various episodes; I learned that it isn’t right to do bad things. Otherwise I may end up getting in trouble. The same applies even when you’re older the media greatly determines what your thoughts, political views, language, the way we dress and the choice of music. School is another agent. In school, we are treated as a group rather than individuals normally we learn in the form of curriculum (Mathematics, English etc.). This important because in school we learn to make friends, gain knowledge, learn the system of reward and punishment, discipline, obedience, moral values and don’t hit another person. We learn all of these in school that helps us view and shape our society. Lastly is peer groups, these are individuals who are similar to your age and status. Think of the groups you associated as a kid and then think about the groups you associate now as an adult. In most cases, peer groups are more influential when you’re an adolescent, mainly because during this age were going through a process

Gun Control in America

...declining in the U.S. Figures from the United States Bureau of Justice and that gun related deaths have dropped 39% since 1993 (Truman, P.H.D & Planty, Ph.D., 2013). The author also states that handguns are mostly responsible gun related deaths and injuries, which raises questions on the emphasis of assault weapons of some gun control supporters. According to Barrett (2013), he states the government says nonfatal gun crime has dropped in the last twenty years by 69%. It is good that the rates have dropped that much. Singh (1998) focuses on an essay written by Jeremy Putley in January 1997, which criticized the American system of government and the assumed deficiencies of its constitution, highlighting gun control in the United States. The topics include the amount of Americans who have died from gun-related deaths yearly during the 1990s, identification of the two gun control measures which were padded by the Democratic 103rd United States Congress, and explanation of the gun crisis in the United States. The United States Bill of Rights (Madison) states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Bill of Rights is a part of our Constitution, which was amended in 1791. This has worked for hundreds of years, and shouldn’t be changed. The United States does have a high number of gun related deaths, but it is worse in many countries, such as Brazil, South Africa, and Switzerland...

Ancient Literatures

...Sean Philips 10/24/2014 Professor Furrow, Howa Literary Research Proposal “Ancient literatures’ manly claims to an ideal Hero” The topic I’m choosing for this proposal and assignment is going to be topic 1. I will be looking to address what it means to be a hero in at least 3 of the works which will be the main foci, as well as some of the others to further support my claims in the journey it takes to become a hero. The main works I will be examining are: “Beowulf”, “Gilgamesh”, and “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” While I look to interpret how the accepted role of a man in ancient societies is exploited in these works, I will also look to the same obligation which may drive these heroes to do their bidding as male constituents. When these works were written, taking the honorable approach of assuming the role of a hero in each story, it must also be examined with scrutiny the time period in which these authors have written these works. The views of what a hero is physically, as well as mentally, were dictated by masculine characteristics and that of pride, valor, and endurance. These same characteristics can still be seen in movies today, but the hero has also transcended into a more intellectual approach, as opposed to the stance taken in these 3 works being analyzed. What it means to be a hero in ancient literature leaves those who were too weak or unequipped out of the picture. My thesis for this research assignment will be to exploit how the time period these works...

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (Nihl)

...are much more complex than this description but you get the gist. Loud sounds, over time, causes the fine hairlike projections that are in the choclea to die and they do not regenerate so the hearing loss is permanent and irreversible. And sound itself is measured in decibles (or dB) and the common range is from 0 dB which is the threshold of hearing to 140 dB which is the sound of a jet taking off or a rock band. We've all used headphones at one time or another. Did you ever think about hearing loss due to your use of headphones? I know that I never did. But we know that heavy machine, lawn mower, and jackhammer operators all use foam earplugs in their ears to block the noise. According to the NIH, (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, Noise Induced Hearing Loss, NIH Pub. No. 14-4233, Updated March 2014) noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) can happen immediately or gradually over time. In order for you to loose your hearing immediately, you would have to be near or in near proximity to a gun shot or explosion. The more incideous hearing loss, gradually over time, comes with constant levels of noise at 85 decibels (dB), or greater, for long periods of time (> 3-8 hours) without a break. This damage can happen at any age, from small children to the elderly can develop NIHL....

Obesity in Today’s World

... Many celebrities, including the First Lady Michelle Obama, have been attacking obesity as an epidemic. The definition of an epidemic says that it is a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community. Many television programs target young children who are watching their cartoon channels with sugary snacks. Should people in today’s society make someone's weight a topic of discussion, or should this be a conversation kept behind the doors of a person and their doctor and family? People should not be judging others when it comes to a topic that can be hurtful to others. Obesity is a problem that should be kept within the confines of the home or a doctor’s office. With the research provided, we will also answer the question of how obesity should be handled in today's society. Television has become a stepping stone for children who are obese. Obese children who have been bullied will sit in front of the television because they do not want to be harassed by the children they are in school with because of their weight. When you add this into the commercials being shown during these children’s shows about sugary snacks, these children will ask their parents for them. This enables...
