Trial and appeal costs 2. Execution costs and daily costs 2. Cost of a life sentence 1. Trial and appeal cost .. most the time there is not an appeals process that is involved with a life sentence due to the fact that they plead guilty to avoid a death sentence. 2. Life in prison and daily cost. .It can take 15-20 years sometimes longer for the actual death sentence to be carried out. With a life sentence the only things that cost are for the guilty to be fed and guarded. a person that is sentenced to life in prison can cost up to 1 million for the entire life sentence.

Martin O'Malley, the governor of Maryland, says that, but for the death penalty, his state would have been $22.4m richer since 1978. That money would have paid for 500 extra policemen for a year, or provided drug treatment for 10,000 addicts.

Now this concept is having a new direction. The Supreme Court and High Courts in India interpret the cases before giving the death sentence as rarest of rare cases. Death Sentence

...Death Sentence Hello, my name is Joaquin Solari Costa and as you may know, I am here to talk about the death penalty or sentence. The death sentence could be defined by different things: Is a judge’s official statement ordering someone to be punished by death, or the punishment of being legally killed, or the practice or legal sanction of allowing the imposition of punishment of death for people convicted on certain crimes. The countries that still apply the death penalty and most make use of it are China, America, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Yemen. However, the number of people supporting the death penalty has begun to decrease. With the United States as an example, there are many ways to make a legal death penalty nowadays: * Lethal injection: injecting a person with a fatal dose of drugs that kills the person by first putting the person to sleep, and then stopping the breathing and heart, in that order. * Electrocution: Using an electric chair, which was the dominant method of execution until the lethal injection appeared. * Gas chamber: consists in a sealed chamber into which a poisonous or asphyxiant gas introduced.  * Hanging: is putting to death by the suspension of a person by a noose or ligature around the neck. * Firing squad or fusillading: a squad fires at the sentenced man. Another type of execution, which is not legal in America, but it is in some other countries, is: * Beheading:  intentional decapitation, usually accomplished with an axe...

...What is something I feel strongly about? I took about five minutes after reading the prompt for this writing assignment before I knew exactly what I wanted to write about. I am going to write about how I think the death penalty should be abolished. There are many reasons behind the idea of myself wanting it to be eradicated. I personally believe that the death penalty is just unfair. The saying “Don’t fight fire with fire” is a perfect example to be incorporated with my thoughts and feelings. Just because someone kills someone doesn’t mean that we should retaliate with the gesture that got them in trouble to begin with. What kind of example is that giving the community, or the whole state for that matter, to handle their problems? Another reason that I feel so strongly against the death penalty has to do with the judicial process that has to be gone through just too even began the execution process. There has to be so much extensive research done to make sure those innocent men and women do not get executed for a crime that did not even commit. Even with going through all these precautions, the risk of executing an innocent person is still there. While this process is happening the guilty party just has to sit and hesitantly wait to have their destiny pronounced. Imagine how the innocent people feel after they wait and then find out that are declared guilty, they were not only accused of something they did not do but then they almost got killed because of it. The mixed emotions...

Choriocarcinoma Not a Death Sentence

...Choriocarcinoma: Not a Death Sentence Renee Oliver-Evers COM/156 March 25, 2012 Raymond Gentry Choriocarcinoma: Not a Death Sentence Choriocarcinoma, or also known as Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD), is a very rare and malignant type of tumor. According to Spickler and Oberleitner (2011), Choriocarcinoma develops from genetically deformed germ cells which usually produce sperm or eggs (pp.1012-1014). Research shows no exact causes for the development of Choriocarcinoma (GTD). Early research shows that Choriocarcinoma was almost always found to be a fatal disease. There are no known means of prevention for this disease. According to Spickler and Oberleitner (2011), although Choriocarcinoma has the capability to metastasize extremely fast, there is a high possibility of a complete cure or remission even if the disease has been diagnosed in later stages of development even with metastases (pp.1012-1014). My research will show that it is not a dismal death sentence for those diagnosed with it. Choriocarcinoma (GTD) is primarily found in women during their childbearing years however it has been diagnosed in men as well. This paper will concentrate on the causes, risk factors, and forms of treatment in women. Doctors have no exact explanation for the development of Choriocarcinoma (GTD), though there are many risk factors. Some of the leading causes are an ectopic...

Opposing Death Sentence

...Essay opposing death sentence Student details Institutional affiliations Introduction There has been an argument that lifting amnesty on miscreants and vagabonds is barbaric and retrogressive. The same argument is seen on the death penalty, and it has been a controversial issue not only in the USA but also in the rest part of the world. The death sentence has been a verdict to individuals who have committed a capital offence. However, this is not considerably the best way to punish the guilty. It is necessary some sympathy be expressed to the guilty party since they could at one point in life decide to change for the better. The death sentence is not the noblest way to counter violence. In this case, it would appear as if it is tat for tat, or to repay violence wit violence. Several civil rights and religious groups have been against death sentence claiming that there is no outright prove that the convict is guilty or not. What if the accused is just innocent and is just accused falsely? There are several ethical downsides of the death sentence and the reasons it should be abolished or not used at all. Several religious and civil rights activists haven't found it easy to negotiate about this penalty. There is a lot of both religious and ethical concerns about the issue that have prompted different groups to oppose staunchly this sentence. Subjecting a person to a death penalty is unconstitutional. The main reason has the fact that the individual living also has his right...

Death Sentence Should Be Banned

...The Death Sentence Should Be Banned "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" This is another way for someone to say they are supportive of the death penalty. The death penalty, to me, is revenge. It kills innocent people every year. Many of the families of victims do not want the criminals to be put to death. The death penalty costs more than a life sentence in jail. "Since 1976, there have been five hundred twenty-three executions in the United States, twenty-three in 1999 alone. There was only eleven before 1984. Then the number rose to twenty-one that year. The number of execution stayed around twenty then dropped to eleven in 1988. Then it steadily rose from there to seventy-four executions in 1997. That was the highest since 1976."(Death Penalty Information Center, P.1) The electrocution method is used by ten states. The gas chamber is used in five states. There are still two states today that use hanging as a method of execution, and two other states use a firing squad. I believe Capital punishment also goes against the Constitution of the United States. Amendments eight and fourteen state that no cruel and unusual punishment can be inflicted and no state can deprive any person of life liberty or property. The death penalty clearly takes these privileges away from American citizens. Everybody makes mistakes. If a jury makes a mistake and a person is falsely accused of murder when they find out they messed up they want to take the sentence away. If the...

John Brown - Notes on Final Address

...John Brown’s Address John Brown Primary Sources Lesson To the Virginia Court, when about to receive the sentence of death for his heroic attempt at Harper’s Ferry, to give deliverance to the captives, and to let the oppressed go free. [Mr. Brown, upon inquiry whether he had anything to say why sentence should not be pronounced upon him, in a clear, distinct voice replied:] I have, may it please the Court, a few words to say. In the first place, I deny everything but what I have already admitted, of a design on my part to free slaves. I intended, certainly, to have made a clean thing of that matter, as I did last winter when I went into Missouri, and there took Slaves without the snapping of a gun on either side, moving them through the country, and finally leaving them in Canada. I designed to have done the same thing again on a larger scale. That was all I intended. I never did intend murder, or treason, or the destruction of property, or to excite or incite Slaves to rebellion, or to make insurrection. I have another objection, and that is that it is unjust that I should suffer such a penalty. Had I interfered in the manner, and which I admit has been fairly proved, -- for I admire the truthfulness and candor of the greater portion of the witnesses who have testified in this case --had I so interfered in behalf of the Rich, the Powerful, the Intelligent, the so-called Great, or in behalf of any of their friends, either father, mother, brother, sister...

Prison Environment

...The Punishment Philosophy Clay Stake CJS/220 January 15, 2012 Tony Sanders The Punishment Philosophy After the conviction process has ended, the sentencing phase has five punishment philosophies the courts can impose. Deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, retribution, and restoration are all punishment philosophies that have the same goal to prevent crime. Judges impose sentences that fit the crime, but must be reasonable to the public and not violate the United States Constitution. Judges may also decide to impose sanctions like fines, probation, home confinement, or even the death penalty. Sentencing and sanctions can be used to rehabilitate criminals, deter crime, or even plea bargains. No matter what the philosophy or the sanction of the sentence, the result is that past behavior can be used to predict future behavior. The five punishment philosophies start with deterrence. Deterrence is a known penalty for crimes committed. For example, the three strikes law was imposed to deter criminals from committing crimes or face extended incarceration. Deterrence was designed to have certainty of a punishment, celerity or swiftness of that punishment, and the severity of the punishment. This philosophy is assuming that all people will consider the consequences of his or her actions before they act. This also means that people will learn from the punishment of the innocent. Incapacitation is the removal of criminals from society. Prisons are the most common...

...Unit III English Composition 12. A topic sentence briefly informs the reader what is to be covered in a given paragraph. Essentially, a topic sentence is stated at the beginning of the sentence. However, this is not always the case. A topic sentence could take the following five positions in a sentence; • Stated first This is a topic sentence that appears at the beginning of a paragraph. The sentence gives the reader a basic idea of what to expect in the paragraph. • Stated last It is a topic sentence that is stated at the end of the sentence. This allows the author to develop a paragraph and summarize with a convincing conclusion at the end. • Stated in the middle This is a topic sentence that appears in the middle of a paragraph. The idea is to allow the author to develop an argument and support it with ideas. • Stated first and last The topic sentence appears both at the beginning and at the end. It is a technique that is used by authors in cases where the content of the paragraph is complex. The topic sentence that appears at the end aims to remind the readers about the content in the paragraph so that they do not loose focus. • Stated implied This is a situation where an author states an obvious topic sentence to avoid being direct. In this case, the topic sentence is not conspicuous. The readers have to read in between the lines to identify the hidden topic sentence. 13. Paragraphs are the building blocks of coherent, authoritative and well-developed essays...

While growing up, I never even thought twice about what I wanted to be. I never had any special interests that stuck out to me. What I hadn’t noticed is that I had a deep fascination with animals of any kind. My mother soon realized my love for animals and ended up filling our house with small animals. We started off occasionally taking care of our neighbor’s dogs, then soon enough my mom had gotten our first kitten lucky; I grew to love animals even more. My only dilemma growing up was that certain people had different opinions . Compare the Ways Wordsworth and Lawrence Express Their Enthusiasm for Nature

...William Wordsworth's piece, "The Rainbow," offers an intriguing look into the human soul. Standing at only ten lines, the poem details a journey through Wordsworth's philosophical beliefs. The subject of the poem “the rainbow” simply answers the question as it implies, through metaphorically expressing the abstract idea, “ the love of nature” creating the theme for the poem. The imagery of the rainbow creates feelings which help Wordsworth communicate his ideas and feelings. Which in this case are his contemplative ideas of growing up but never changing, like the rainbow never changes. The register of the poem is very simplistic, with short simple lexis which creates a stead pace. Also the gentle soft lexis ‘life’ ‘heart’ ‘sky’ creates a great contrast to the hard harsh word ‘die!’ which is where Wordsworth is at the climax of expressing his emotion towards the thought of not feeling the same way about nature. The majority of the poem is monosyllabic which suggests simplicity but the verbal constructs “was it/is it/be it/could wish” along with the lexis “piety” modifies the simplicity. This suggest the sense of humility and awe Wordsworth feels if the presence of nature and the monosyllables express the grandeur and weight of that feeling. The pattern in the phonology within the poem also suggests awe but soon shows excitement. The beginning of the poem contains long-vowelled syllables such as ‘heart’ and ‘behold’, portraying wonder and bewilderment, where as ‘was it’ ‘is it’...

An Inspector Calls - Inspector Goole and Sheila

...Birling.” Once again, this quote has connotations of authority and superiority, encouraging the reader to understand how much importance to give to this man. Knowing that, during the time the play was set in, women weren’t as respected as they are now, this quote could also be controversial. First of all, Inspector Goole disrespects Mr Birling, who is the man of the house, by making his own daughter disobey his rules. Furthermore he speaks politely to Sheila unlike her mother, who calls her a child (on p 185), and calls her Miss Birling, which is a sign of respect. Finally, when the Inspector, with the help of a stage direction, says “(impressively): I’m a police inspector, Miss Birling.” The use of this adverb brings a lot of power to the sentence, making it sound not only important, but also overwhelming and imposing. Second of all, we perceive the Inspector as an efficacious man, able to get the right responses from people to do his duty. He uses this trait to make people think about their actions, and respond to his inquiries in a positive manner. We can take the example of this quote: “And so you used the power...

Hamlet the Drama Behind It All

...writing are fictional. His other pieces are based on an old story Shakespeare had adapted. His writing has many twists and changes that engages the reader and allows them to read more. Shakespeare’s works of art are all written in the form of a play as opposed to a novel or short story. Shakespeare uses literary devices and a huge amount of imagination to come up with these fascinating stories. The story of Hamlet begins when King Hamlet died and was eventually buried. Prince Hamlet, his son, found a mysterious ghost inside the castle which drives him to take vengeance on his father’s death and seek revenge on Claudius for his father’s murderer. True this can be seen as a "tragedy" but Hamlet isn't just any tragedy—it's a classic and revengeful tragedy! One literary device that Shakespeare uses in this particular play is antithesis. Antithesis is contrary ideas expressed in a balanced sentence. He uses this literary device when he writes, “To be, or not to be, that is the question” (Barnet, Burto, & Cain, 2014). He is expressing opposite ideas of being or not being, living or dying. Another, antithesis example in Hamlet, is when Claudius asks Hamlet about the clouds. Hamlet replies, “Too much in the sun” (Barnet, Burto, & Cain, 2014). Hamlet contrasts imagery of clouds to rain and storms. Also the grief to imagery of sun to joy and happiness. As he does this sarcastically, he also puns the word “sun” with “son” as he is bitter about losing his father and having Claudius...
