Decisions in Paradise One
The purpose of this paper will be to analyze preliminary considerations for the development of a new Wyndham Resort on the South Pacific island of Kava. Development of a new resort on Kava will further establish “Wyndham Worldwide as one of the world's largest hospitality companies across six continents” (Wyndham, para. 2, 2011). The paper will examine potential issues that could hinder the establishment of Wyndham’s presence in Kava. Wyndham’s mission is to “be the global leader in travel accommodations welcoming our guests to iconic brands and vacation destinations through our signature Count on Me! service” (Wyndham, para. 1, 2011). Decision-making and analysis pertaining to Wyndham’s presence in Kava must be sensitive in context to internal and external stakeholders needs. Wyndham is a very profitable company. On August 11, 2011, Wyndham Worldwide Corporation announced $500 Million increase in their Share Repurchase Program (Wyndham, 2011). Kava is one of many strands of islands in the South Pacific Ocean. Neighboring destinations such as Fiji, Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, and Vanuatu attract many tourists in search of island paradise. Kava’s population consist of an ethnic mix of native South Pacific tribes, Spanish, French, Asian, African, and an increasing number of Americans. Local inhabitants speak various languages including French, English, Spanish, and indigenous dialect. The downside of Kava’s populations is over 50% of the residents are under 15. Kava’s economic sector gains income from coffee, cocoa, spices, petroleum, sugar, bananas, tourism, fishing, and natural gas as well as cheap, quality labor. Increased tourism potential is well established in accordance with Kava’s location and accessibility.
“Good decision-making starts from the right place and keeps the purpose of a decision

simple” (Langdon, 2001, p. 19). Consideration of potential problems, impediments, and investment returns must be considered to analyze Wyndham’s potential presence. Kava location in the South Pacific makes the island susceptible to many natural disasters. Environmental forces such as tidal waves, hurricanes, typhoons, and floods can several impact tourism and business profits. Kava is home to several volcanoes as well. Precise location of the Wyndham’s resort will be vital against the threat of volcanic eruptions. An operational contingency plan is necessary to secure Wyndham’s presence in the event of damage from a natural disaster.

Alex and I, used practical brainstorming techniques to devise probable solution to many of the obstacles present in Kava. Through critical thinking and soft modeling techniques, Alex, and I were able to identify all the potential stakeholders. Support from Kava’s government, localities, residents, and businesses have created strong encouragement for the development of Wyndham’s resort. Support from local, state, and national organizations provides aid and helps secure Wyndham’s investment in Kava. Support from national military and government agencies is available in the event of a disaster. Wyndham’s Worldwide also retains insurance policies that protect their investments from natural disasters, fires, and other cataclysmic events.
Wyndham Worldwide strives to “cultivate a global workforce where individuals from a wide array of backgrounds, with different experiences and viewpoints, are valued” (Wyndham, para. 6, 2011). The development of a Kava resort will positively influence Kava’s diverse population by providing jobs to many of the island residents. Alex and I, encourage the development of a Wyndham’s new resort. Kava’s potential economic revenue is steadily growing thanks to demands in petroleum, tourism, and the islands natural resources. Capitalizing on support from Kava’s sponsors promotes the success of the Kava project. Many inhabitants lose makeshift homes during natural disasters. Chris Morales belief in giving back to the community could allow Wyndham resorts to act as a refuge in the event of a natural disaster. The possibility of financial support from governments during times of need will contribute to sustainability of Wyndham’s resort in Kava. Marketing Wyndham’s new resort will be crucial to recruiting potential employees and attracting tourists. Failure to establish Wyndham’s new resort as a premium vacation destination will reduce profitability and contribute to project failure. Providing customers with superior satisfaction accustomed to Wyndham resorts will be necessary for success. The development of a new Wyndham’s resort in Kava can be determined by actively question potential barriers. “Thinking about and discussing the roles of stakeholder provided insight into the decision-makers objectives and key uncertainties” (French, p. 2, 2003). Alex and I, used numerous soft modeling techniques such as Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis, dimensional plotting, mapping, and scenario planning during analyzes of the Kava project. “Wyndham Worldwide embraces diversity in its regular course of business. The people behind our company are as diverse as the broad suite of products and services we offer to leisure and business travelers. Diversity enriches our performance and services, the communities where we live and work, and the lives of our employees and customers” (Wyndham, para 1, 2011). The development and growth of the Kava project promotes, motivates, and enriches Kava’s economic condition. References

...Decisions in Paradise, Part 1 Rebecca Lewis MGT/350 July 2, 2011 Cheryl Boehm Decisions in Paradise, Part 1 Kava is a significant island country in the South Pacific. There is cultural diversity of Kava is as diverse as our company. There is an ethnic mix of indigenous South Pacific tribes, African, Spanish, French, Asian (primarily Chinese), and since World War II, a sizable amount of Americans. Kava religious diversity is just as mixed as its ethnic diversity. Roughly 50% of the population is indigenous and the remainder is divided between Christian, Buddhist, and Islamic. Kava receives most of its revenue from the selling and manufacturing of petroleum, coffee, cocoa, spices, sugar, bananas, fishing, natural gas, and tourism. With Kava’s lacks a large work pool-50% of the population is under the age of 15, health issues (HIV/Aids and high risk for avian flu), the apparent likelihood of a natural disaster occurring (tidal waves/tsunami, typhoons/hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes just to mention a few), and non-natural disasters (petroleum spills, fires, and terrorism) are destabilizing the island’s infrastructure. With WDW being a well-known hospitality organization that specializes in “creating the magic” for its guests is committing its resources to help Kava. With WDW helping Kava it will not only help WDW but it will also deliver high value to our shareholders as Kava’s resources are critical to the world’s sustainability. Before WDW can determine...

I will be discussing the complex solving technique by defining the issues that appear in this business scenario. Also I will discuss the forces that are involved in the formulation of the problem in Kava. Also by using the problem formulation tool’s and techniques. I will be describing the organizational and environmental obstacles in a way that considers various key stakeholders that will be impacted by the decisions made in Kava. There will be applying critical thinking in the decision making process. The Marietta Memorial Hospital has asked Nik to be manager in Kava at the hospital the organization wants to build there. Nik will have to transfer there and stay until the hospital is built and good doctors are hired and employees are hired and everything is in operating condition. Of course Nik will have to keep an upper hand of the cost coming in and going out. Nik will have to keep costs at a minimal to keep the project in Kava functioning. There will be a minimal amount of staff until there is income coming in for the hospital and when it starts to show better profit then reevaluate the staffing issues for more employees. Nik will need to educate Kava and surrounding areas of what the hospital has to offer and what they will be able to do for the people there in Kava....

...Decisions in Paradise, Part I April Selby MGT350 08/30/2010 DONALD WLODARSKI Decisions in Paradise, Part I After visiting the country of Kava, located in the South Pacific it was very clear that our company could do a great deal of good. The island country is obviously struggling and after speaking with Alex, it is apparent to me why we are trying to make our organization known in this area. Kava, although a beautiful canvas, faces many struggles not only from an economic standpoint but also from things such as natural disasters and terrorist threats and attacks. Natural disasters such as tidal waves, hurricanes, typhoons, floods, fires, tornadoes, volcanoes, and earthquakes remain a concern for the entire population. To add to that, illnesses such as AIDS and avian flu are also an issue that is a part of everyday life on the island. The population of Kava is surprisingly unbalanced with over 50% being children under the age of 15. Although this may appear a huge issue to other companies, to ours this is an opportunity to reach out to the youth and help them grow and learn. All of these obstacles have lead my organization to make the decision to have a presence in Kava. Our company is currently planning to further expand its vast number of locations to include Kava. This move would allow us to build a new location which would carry products that are already a part of the economy in Kava. We will also bring in other products to further suffice the needs of the population...

...Decisions in Paradise, Part I Cheryl Banes MGT/350 December 5, 2011 Howard Kersey Decisions in Paradise Alex and I have been presented with a rather unique situation on a little island off the South Pacific Ocean, called Kava. Kava was once a beautiful, sprawling island that attracted numerous tourists because of its balmy weather and indigenous tribes. Recently Kava has seen its fair share of disasters that has plagued the island. Our mission is to turn these disasters into opportunities, by establishing integrity among the people, loyalty and selfless service within this tiny island. We will begin in our Phase I process by looking at the organizational planning and climate, how the human resources will function, and finally we will delve into the business ethics. Once we have gathered all pertinent information we will combine each into one neat bundle in preparation for Phase II. The government of Kava requested that Alex and I both come up with a plan that will help alleviate the diverse composition, beliefs, attitudes, and ideologies that has caused the melting pot to boil over. Organizational planning will encompass us to identify the immediate and long-term objectives, and formulating specific strategies to achieve them. Our enterprise has demonstrated that we can develop and manage a very effective, as well as highly efficient, organizational structure and process methods. ...on an island located off the South Pacific, by the name of Kava. Many of these issues will be discussed further in this paper. Not only will these issues will be discussed, but I will be determining what kind of decisions that will be made in fixing these issues. Many people who visit this island may think Kava is a place that you would call paradise. A physical paradise surrounded by beautiful palm trees, people surfing and lounging around on the beach, enjoying a tropical breeze. Unfortunately for some people who try to vision this island as a beautiful place to take a vacation, it is however, not really a place in which one would hope to travel too. The majority of Kava’s population is over 50% of the people that live there are under the age of 15 years old. Kava is a disaster area due to the issues they are experiencing, such as, Tsunami, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods, Fires, Volcanic eruptions, Earthquakes, HIV/AIDS, Petroleum spill, High risk for avian flu, and Terrorism (from within and outside the country). This is a country that is in serious need of some help in getting the country moving forward and on its way to recovery. In the decision-making process, there are a total of nine steps that we must follow in order to improve the issues being caused in Kava. The first step in the decision-making process is identifying the problem or the issue. As stated in the introduction, Kava faces the following issues: Tsunami, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods, Fires, Volcanic eruptions...

Before the company makes the decision to become a greater presence in Kava, the company’s management team will have to evaluate if the benefits are greater than the negatives. Most paradise islands have the white sandy beaches with the palm trees that sway softly as the light clean breeze flow through the air. Many would think of snorkeling, fishing, and swimming all day for relaxation. In the beginning I thought the Country of Kava in the South Pacific was just that island. But once I continued to read about the country my thought quickly changed. In this paper I will explain my real thoughts about the country Kava. I will examine some of the issues with the island. In order to expand the Department of Human Services in Kava I will need to identify the problems and create ideas for the problems that have been identified.
