Decisions in Paradise, Phase One
The “Expanding Presence” project for BLW International (a tourism and consulting firm), is a three-phase operation involving the main office stateside and a remote branch location on the South Pacific island of Kava. The anticipated outcome for the Kava Branch is to improve existing infrastructure and relationships with native businesses and at the same time create jobs for local inhabitants. This first phase encompasses the research and establishing of company processes, human resources strategies, and ethical standards for the firm. Policies and procedures of the corporation are designed harmoniously to benefit local economies monetarily and improve global impact of trades and services. BLW International is dedicated to assist and aid local business owners through this process.
Creating new opportunities for the future generations of Kava is a primary concern. Natural disasters, such as typhoons, tidal waves, floods, tornadoes, fires, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, petroleum spills, HIV/AIDS, and avian flu directly affect the economy of Kava. National, state, and local government along with occupant business entities should combine resources and plan accordingly for contingency situations. Disaster training and education for the public is an initiative worthwhile. BLW International is currently engaging in a budget for emergency response training for new employees. Organizational Processes
Current staff is Alex (operations director for Kava) and Nik (New hire, Onsite Manager). Presently, Alex is multitasking and also fulfilling the receptionist position. With the advancement of the three phases, this expansion project requires a dedicated Administrative Assistant. It is essential that this individual have a good reputation with locals. This person is a gatekeeper and is responsible for processing new hires. Human Resources
The firm’s desire is to employ from the resident community. Recruiting activities for this location are a vital role for long-term retention, continuity, and success. Methods employed are to included employee referral, word of mouth advertising, Internet campaigns, native staffing agencies, employment associations, and walk-ins. There is a monetary incentive for current employees who introduce new candidates for employment. If hired, a 90-day probationary period starts and after this, the bonus is paid.
The demographics on the Kava Island comprise of an ethnic blend. Numerous resident South Pacific tribes, African, French Asian, Spanish, and Americans reside year round. Over 50% of the population is below the age of 15. A plethora of languages spoken on the island country of Kava, involve many native tongues and three other languages English, Spanish, and French. Religious makeup is approximately 50% indigenous and the other 50% involving Christian, Buddhist, and Muslim. Regard for ethical and religious concerns are top priority of BLW Inc. Adhesion to resident customs and courtesies when appropriate is company policy.
With a mixture of numerous cultures and backgrounds, BLW should invest in training and education courses for new hires. This is to occur during the 90-day probationary period and is to determine supervisory roles. The preliminary instruction is to include hands on scenarios involving customer relations, diversity, ethics, and information technology applications. Once the initial training is completed, ongoing refresher classes are available. The firms training program will set the standard for readiness preparation. Economy
Goods and services for the country of Kava vary from petroleum, coffee, cocoa, and spices, to bananas, sugar, and commercial fishing. Kava is also a hot spot for tourism and attracts visitors every year from all over the world. This industry generates a large cash flow essential for the continued growth of Kava. However, Kava is also known for terrorism from inside and outside the country. To counter this threat BLW International plans to partner with government and local business and incentivize a neighborhood watch program for the tourist areas. An education program explaining that a portion of all profits for BLW International goes back into the community should promote a spirit of esprit de corps among resident natives. Conclusion Improving any relationship whether personal or business, requires an investment of time. Educating the people of Kava on the reasons why they should take an active role in the success of expanding the firm’s presence is a step in the right direction. Outward demonstration through action is a powerful method to show that BLW International has Kava’s best interest at heart and is essential for gaining favor of the people.

The island of Kava has many issues because of many disasters that have taken place over the past few years. Over half of the population is under the age of 15. This age issue exists because of the diseases that are present in Kava. There has been widespread illness due to HIV and the high risk of the avian flu. ...Decisions in Paradise Business Scenario Vanita Lash University of Phoenix MGT/350 Professor Courtney Wilson March 12, 2012 Plan for Kava Part 1 Organizational processes Inadequate organization structure and work processes may hinder an organization from accomplishing their goals. The first task that needs to be addressed is focusing on the customer. The company needs to gather information on their target customers. An example would be finding out what are the target age ranges, gender, and economic class that the company will be catering to. Once the company has the information the next step is finding a way to supply their target customers with the product or service that they need. Once the product or service is determined, the company has to find a way to supply the service or product at a better rate than their competitors. Planning plays a key role in the organizational process. As stated by (Strategic planning-the basic idea, 2012) “The process is about planning because it involves intentionally setting goals and developing an approach to achieving those goals.  The process is disciplined in that it calls for a certain order and pattern to keep it focused and productive.” Asking questions is another critical aspect of the organizational process. An example would be asking “what is the most significant problem that needs to be solved first?” Once the organization knows what problem they...
