...Project Management PM3110 Victor Nyankah 10/24/14 Tacoma Narrow Bridge Executive Summary The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built in 1940 at the cost of $6.4 million funded mostly by the federal government’s Public Works Administration. The purpose of the brigde was to connect Seattle and Tacoma with the Puget Sound Navy at Bremerton, Washington. It was said to be the third largest of its kind. Though it was a long bridge, it was very narrow because it only had one way traffic from each direction. It had a center span of 2800 feet and a 1000 foot approaches on each side. The bridge took nineteen months to be constructed and fell apart barely four months after its inauguration. It is however important to note that even before the inauguration, the bridge had started showing signs of incompetence and exhibiting strange characteristics which shouldn’t have gone unnoticed. The bridge started galloping and swaying and hence got the nick name, the “Galloping Gertile”. In order to under the dynamics of suspension bridges, we need to understand the physics of bridges as propagated by Newton also known as Newton’s Laws. All bridges are subject to Newton's three laws of motion. Newton's First Law states that an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an Unequal force. For a bridge, this means that unless all of the forces on a bridge remain balanced, one or more components of the bridge will move. Left uncorrected, this instability can lead to a partial or...

...Construction Auditing I will be auditing the new construction site of a four story office building. The building will be closed in; meaning office spaces and hallways will be indoors. This office building will be located in a heavy traffic area in a big city. The traffic will consist of sidewalk traffic along with delivery trucks and other vehicles passing by the work site location. It will not be connected to other buildings; it will stand alone with a parking lot and parking deck. The parking deck will be four stories as well. The top floor of the parking deck will have a roof to protect people from rain and bad weather. The area of business that this office will impact will be the construction portion. The audit will make sure all members of the construction crew are working in a safe and healthy environment. This audit will include a physical inspection of all equipment used for the project including, vehicles and cranes. Other portions of items that will be inspected will be safety plans, OSHA logs, first aid station, and documentation of employee training. The vehicles will be inspected to make sure they are able to hold the proper amount of weight. It will lift beams, air conditioning units, and other items. The vehicles will also be inspected to assure the engine is up to date on all maintenance requirements. The tires will be inspected to make sure they are not in need of air or new thread. ...LEGAL A. Corporation Forming a corporation, prospective shareholders exchange money, property, or both, for the corporation's capital stock. A corporation generally takes the same deductions as a sole proprietorship to figure its taxable income. A corporation can also take special deductions. The primary advantage of a corporation is that its owners, known as stockholders or shareholders, are not personally liable for the debts and liabilities of the corporation. ...design, including ensuring that the four barriers needed in any building enclosure (Le., water barrier, thermal insulation barrier, vapor retarder, and air barrier) are provided and are in the correct location for a given climate. Long term, in-service roof performance can be affected by several important factors including: the metal roofing system and its expected service life, the climate at the building location, roof slope and geometry, and ambient conditions (temperature/relative humidity) within the building. Improper selection of the roof underlayment may allow roof leakage or entrap moisture due to vapor diffusion or air exfiltration, which may accelerate deterioration of concealed components, shortening their service life and necessitating repairs. Further, to provide longevity the underlayment should match the intended service life of the metal roofing system. Although there is no universal design that applies to all buildings, this paper attempts to clarify many of the issues involved in selecting appropriate metal roof underlayment materials, and provides guidelines to builders who are responsible for constructing metal roofing systems. In general, contractors should be wary of changing the system design or recommending an underlayment product without considering all of the parameters that may affect performance. The system designer should be responsible for determining an appropriate design for any given project. 2. TYPES OF METAL ROOF SYSTEMS...

...on chalkboard with princesses on it to put on one wall so they could write messages. The youngest, Sadie, recently told me i needed to get a chalk board with Power Rangers on it to put on the other side. I'm still looking. When her older sister decided on a recent trip that we needed a couch in the playhouse, she and I built one. We did not use pink or purple for the upholstery. We used blue. We built this playhouse several years ago, and the girls continue to enjoy it when they visit. Over the years, though, they probably have not enjoyed playing in it more than we enjoyed building it. One day toward the end of the building process when we had finished our project for that day, we stood back and admired our work.“The girls may never appreciate this,” I told my husband, “but we sure have enjoyed building it.” Besides making something our granddaughters would enjoy, it was a learning experience in building and something we could look at and say "We built that." We still do...

...and maintenance, and decks and patios. Custom wood-work and furniture are in high demand in today’s market, everything from custom toy chests to commercial decks and patios. Some businesses may be small with carpenters who work from their home or they may be larger construction type businesses that specialize in cabinetry for homes and decks and patios. There are many benefits for a home-based carpentry business, like Nioco’s, to be online. Being online will give Nioco’s more exposure to their individualized work, letting people see first-hand the type of work Nioco’s can do and receiving customer feedback on the product will expand their customer base. Nioco’s currently operates by word-of-mouth, starting off by doing work for friends and posting pictures of the products on Facebook and letting those customers tell their friends, etc. If Nioco’s had an online web page, customers would be able to see examples of Nioco’s work, be able to contact and make orders easily, and receive customer feedback or testimonials to gain potential clients or improve customer experience. Nioco’s is operated and owned by one person, Jay Walden. As a home based business, he has all the tools necessary to make the most intricate designs and personalize projects. He has constructed wine racks, toy chests, keepsake boxes, picture frames, coffee tables, nightstands and storage benches. He has also done more commercial type projects such as deck and patio refurbishing and building a bar top and bar wall...

... level and square through all kinds of weather. I chose attractive, naturally rot-resistant western red cedar for this job. I've built plenty of pergolas with pressure-treated lumber too--if you go that route, just make sure the lumber is rated for ground contact. Vinyl and composites, which often come in ready-to-assemble kits, also work well. For this project, I built a frame on the ground to mark my four posts' locations before digging. I moved the frame out of the way, dug the postholes and brought the frame back. Then I backfilled the 6 x 6 posts and fastened them to the frame. This method works for pergolas in open lawn space. If you are building over an existing stone patio, don't anchor the structure directly to the patio. Instead, remove some stones, dig footings and weave the patio parts around the posts. To anchor to a concrete slab or footing, use post anchors like Simpson Strong-Tie's ABA66--these raise the post off the ground, letting moisture escape. When affixing to the side of the house, fasten the timbers securely to framing and flash the connection. One thing to watch out for: Tying the pergola to a deck can be dangerous. Get a permit to ensure...

...before the Empire State Building do not stare beyond its facade and question the history that has made it one of New York City's most prized landmarks. It is often viewed two-dimensionally, as a vertical line amongst other vertical lines in an impressive skyline. However, the Empire State Building is not so much a building as a capsule encompassing a three-dimensional space loaded with histories. It is necessary to address these histories dynamically, and from multiple historical angles in order to gain a more complete and multi-faceted understanding of the building. To discuss the Empire State Building, this paper will look beyond its presence as a building and question its history on a micro level, as well as the history it produced on a macro level, from the impact it had on the lives of poor laborers, to its impact throughout the entire nation and the rest of the world. This discussion of the Empire State will start at the beginning, and address two characters that were foundational to its creation. The first of these men is John Jacob Raskob, the financial support that was necessary for the building's realization. Raskob chose real estate as a venue in which to invest because it was popularly regarded as safe and secure (Tauranac 98). He was not interested in investing in something that was perceived as glamorous and rather chose the path he imagined to have the least risk. The second man is Alfred E. Smith; he became a spokesperson of sorts to the building. As a politician, Smith...
