... Kanye West will receive an honorary degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in May. "I was a gifted artist since age five and won national competitions and went to art school. I'm actually getting an honorary doctorate on May 5th from the Art Institute of Chicago," the rapper revealed during an interview with Clique. West famously highlighted dropping out of college with his 2004 album The College Dropout. The rapper attended the American Academy of Art and Chicago State University before he left the school to pursue a career in music. While is Kanye West is adorned by his fans, the rapper can't seem to win over the heart of President Barack Obama. After West's Taylor Swift incident at the MTV Awards, the president responded to the ordeal by calling the rapper a jackass. It seems as if West and President Obama have since moved on from the name-calling situation. During a recent appearance at Oxford University, the rapper revealed that he understands his role as being a servant. West also said he understands that his voice has the power to reach a lot of people, and he can also use his voice to build relationships with amazing individuals as well. The rapper dropped a bombshell when he said he calls President Obama "out of the blue." He also said the president calls his home phone. When West made these bold statements, most people believed the rapper. Besides, the odds of the president responding to West's claim seemed a bit far-fetched. Luckily, President Obama made an...

...Def Leppard’s follow-up LP, “High ‘n’ Dry”, was an even bigger seller than “Getcha Rocks Off”, breaking the top ten. All together the group broadened their sound and stretching their heavy metal boundaries with the release of songs like “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak”. A few months after the follow-up LP was released, Pete Willis was replaced by Phil Collen because Willis had a severe drinking problem that affected his performance on stage. “Def Leppard was now a headline act after only two albums, and Collen’s style differed enough from Willis’s to create a unique combination with Clark” (Def Leppard: For the Record”). The publicity and attention the group was receiving started to increase more and more over time. Unanimously, the band members decided to hire Mutt Lange, a producer, to yield “Pyromania”. “Pyromania” eventually sold more than two million copies worldwide. “Photograph”, “Rock of Ages”, and “Foolin” were “Pyromania’s” biggest hits. By then end of 1983, the five band members were being featured regularly in...

...quire. I also learned that when deaf rappers rap they move their arms wildly to the music but aren’t always in sync with the music. Their hand movements spell out the words to those who sign. What also surprised me is that deaf people like music and actually have groups. I wouldn’t expect that since they are unable to hear I wouldn’t expect them to play music on a radio or play music themselves like having their own group. When I read the title of the article I thought that the article was going to be about how deaf people like music and dancing, something of that sort. I didn’t expect it to be about an actual hip hop group made up of deaf individuals. That was pretty interesting. When reading this article titled “Hip Hop For The Deaf And Def” I was excited because I just didn’t expect there to be deaf music groups. I thought it was really cool that James L. Taylor III grew up in a bad area but turned his life around with this deaf hip hop group. I also hope that more people become aware of groups such as this because it shows that deaf people are capable of all different careers and it can help open the eyes of the hearing community to the deaf and it will help them understand how alike hearing and deaf people really are. This article was really interesting and I am glad that I decided to read it....

...The impact of religion is sometimes apparent in many different forms of art. One type of artistic expression that religion is sometimes expressed in is music. Whether it is specifically Christian-based music or secular, musicians of all genres may eventually write a song or sing about their religious beliefs at some point. There is a very broad spectrum of diversity in music. People from all around the world with different backgrounds, race, religion, and style can express themselves in this form. Growing up I was exposed to many different genres of music. Hip-hop, which is classified as a subculture that originated from an African American community in the 1970’s, has always been intriguing to me and is a huge part of who I am. There are four elements of Hip-Hop; rapping, DJing, break-dancing, and graffiti. I will be focusing on the music aspect of Hip-Hop and the large impact religion has on some of these artists that perform Hip-Hop music. Over the years, Hip-Hop music has gained a bad reputation. Many people find the lyrics to be offensive, obscene, or even racist. A very small portion of it is, but most of it is the complete opposite. Matthew Paul Miller, better known by his Hebrew stage name Matisyahu, is known for the positive messages he delivers through his reggae-rap style music. Matisyahu says his Jewish spirituality has most, if not everything to do with the way he writes music. In his song “Jerusalem”, he raps about ancient history and religious acts that took...

...As Tupac Shakur points out in his song “ Keep Ya Head Up” he writes “when he tells you you ain't nuttin' don't believe him and if he can't learn to love you you should leave him” In those lyrics Tupac Shakur identifies the lack of respect that men give women but it is also reminding a woman her self-value. Many people believe that Hip Hop has the ability to connect with the soul. Word Press recently conducted a study and concluded that women are objectified and mistreated in Hip Hop lyrics (Cundiff 13). Hip hop’s derogatory lyrics have effected women’s relationships, body image and self-esteem. Hip Hop lyrics contacting explicit content about women have effected their relationships with men. Some women are infatuated with the Hip Hop artist and the money, cars and lifestyle that they talk about in their lyrics. Women can be oblivious by the lyrics that are being said in Hip Hop songs/ music. They are conforming as well as accepting for Hip Hop artist to degrade them which hinders their relationship with a man by allowing them to be insulting. “Hip Hop is a man’s game”- (Hurt06) Sug Knight , meaning that you have to play the role to get the part, in other words to receive a record deal. Rapper Kanye West wrote a song called “I’m in It”. “Black girl sippin white wine put my fist in her like a civil rights sign” He is clearly stating that it is acceptable to be physically violent with a woman. This type of attitude is what can lead up to abusive relationships. Statistics have...

...In a 2008 interview for a British radio station, the rapper Kanye West compared his contribution to music to Michael Jordan’s contribution to basketball with the announcement: "I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation. Of this decade, I will be the loudest voice.”i The public responded to West with outright rejection. A notorious South Park episode titled “Fish Sticks” portrays West as the only person in the world too dumb to understand a joke who repeatedly calls himself the “genius voice of a generation,” poking fun at both his egotistic personality and his lack of skill at giving interviews.ii The well-known entertainment blog The Mo’Kelly Report snapped, “Don’t compare yourself to Michael Jordan if you’re not willing for people to recognize that you neither have six rings nor are the best in the world at what you do.”iii More comically, Stephen Colbert reacted by launching “Operation Humble Kanye” and then campaigning himself as the voice of the 3 generation, telling West, “You want to be the voice of a generation? Get in line. It goes me, Obama Girl, the freecreditreport.com guys - then it's a tie between you and Crocs."iv The aggressive rejection of West as the “voice of the generation” shows the reluctance for the public to be represented by a controversial figure. Since his entrance into the music industry, West has maintained an overwhelmingly negative relationship with media. On the other...

This kind of world requires dedication, talent, sacrifice, passion, and a plethora of other qualities one must have to arise to true stardom. Talent and good looks will only get oh so far in this industry, but what it really takes is, a whole lot originality and a sprinkle of “pizazz” to allow you to succeed beyond your wildest dreams. In the middle of the play, Lear went mad and lost everything. On the other hand, the novel, The Catcher in the Rye is about a boy named Holden Caufield.
