Dear Mr. Secretary Duncan, This letter is to inform the necessary reasons of why physical education needs to be a part of state schools common core. SHAPE America (2014) highly recommends students participate in physical activities to become well rounded healthy individuals. Teaching students the importance of physical education can help better them as a whole. Three learning domains known as cognitive, affective, and psychomotor play key roles in students learning development.
Cognitive learning through physical education is triggered by having the children solve multiple problems and concepts to figure out in the daily physical activities they participant in. This suggest that the movement involved is what’s important (Sibley, Etnier; 2003). Trial and error affects the way children can figure out what “skills” are needed to complete the curriculum and units that are assigned to them. Which gives the students an insight on how to perfect these skills that can translate into their daily life routines and lifestyle relationships. Focus more on the “whole children” rather than just the physical aspects of them. The body and the mind work together and is one entity (Sibley,2003).
Attitudes and feelings can be expressed in physical education causing an affective learning domain (Krathwoh,2001). Steps are created by this such as receiving, responding, valuing, organization, and characterization. The children organize their viewpoints of others, develop perspectives, and gain a understanding of others ideas (Bloom,1978). A feeling of respect can be shown by valuing the diverse opinions of their classmates as well. Cooperate with others to complete the tasks at hand, an example of this can be to work as a team in basketball to score points. Help out one another to improve on communication and conversation by passing the ball to one another which is key to having throughout life. Once the students have learned more about physical education and its guidelines it gives them a better chance of participating and can once again translate into other classes outside of physical education class.( Bloom,2001)
Skilled movement are the key aspect of the psychomotor domain (Bloom,2001) It’s more than gaining the skills in games because skills like writing and talking are psychomotor skills that are also key to child development. Naturalization is what we want to achieve, this is where actions become as a second nature at a high level of performance. From this the students gain articulation which means several skills can be performed in a variety of ways other than in a physical education settings. Since obesity is a major issue(Ogden,2012) these skills can help children teach the skills necessary to be physically fit. Health related components that can lead to better obese rates in america and reduce risk of many diseases like stroke heart attacks, and some cancers. Physical education can give students better health for life long fitness. It should be just as important as any other core. ...The children in school now are not getting the full education that they deserve. With the recent downturn of the economy, many have been forced to give up things we took for granted in the past. The school system has been hit particularly hard by the recession and has been forced to make a long list of cuts to their programs. Most of the programs that have been chosen to be cut are either the art or after school programs, if not both. The effects of these programs being canceled is having a larger effect on the children than most would like to admit to.
