...After a while, you start believing your lie. For example, you are working on a science fair project with your best friend, and you agree to split the work. Your friend is very smart so you let her do all the work because you know she’s capable of it. When it’s time for a presentation, you don’t know any of the information, which is very embarrassing. It’s obvious you did no work. You tell everyone “I did the work, but I didn't get a chance to speak”, and you start believing your lie. This doesn't seem fair to your friend who basically did everything but got half-credit. Integrity means doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do. You definitely aren't forced to be honest, but honesty means success. Lying and agreeing with anything and everything somebody else says won't really get you anywhere in life. It's important to express your opinions and not cower in the shadows. Having integrity also includes giving and keeping promises. Essentially, if you know that you can't keep a promise, don't make one. Make careful, and smart decisions that you know you can follow up...

...Honesty Essay Honesty is a very abstract word. It is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “adherence to the facts; refusal to lie, steal or deceive in any way.” But, what does ‘honesty’ exactly mean? Some would say that honesty means not telling lies, not committing crimes or living a life according to what law says. To be honest, it is a manifestation of the truth, and the facts behind are just a consequence of being honest. In a simple way, honesty is not only to tell the truth, but also to live the truth. Prior to taking this course I had the notion honesty was something that was done to keep one out of trouble. Growing up my parents would always tell me honesty is the policy and truth will set your free. I believe it is hard for any child to be completely honest due to fear of the repercussions of their actions. Honesty is a virtue that should be taught to all children to ensure that they will grow up and be honest productive members of society. According to (Dr. Robinson, 2015) It is wrong to take the property of others without their consent, or to get any advantage from them by deception to concealment, or any false contrivance (plan or scheme). He who does this, or attempts to do it, or even desires to do it, is not honest. This course has taught me that honesty and truth go hand in hand. I try and stay true to my morals and be honest and tell the truth in every aspect of my life. In a person relationship it is definitely important to be honest with each other...

...Nicholas Hamilton Rhetoric 20 Amy J. February 17, 2015 The Irony in Nietzsche Friedrich Nietzsche writes in his essay “On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense” about the understandings of knowledge, truth, and morality. Interestingly the translation of the original title for Nietzsche’s work might have been “On Truth and Lie in the Extramoral Sense.” This is interesting because the translated version that is given for readers is “Nonmoral”; however another possible translation could have been “Extramoral” which shows that his writing may either be something not consistent with morality, but it may also be overly moral as well. Kenneth Burke writes in his work “Four Master Tropes”, about the tropes of metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony. He provides numerous definitions of irony as well as the three temptations of irony. Nietzsche’s writing and ideas about “truth and lies” are “ironic” based on the definition and examples Burke uses as well as the standard dictionary definition of irony. This irony accomplishes incongruity with what appears to be truth and lies and what it actually is; since there is no concrete truth, this is ironic in itself. Individuals often confuse and misuse the term ironic, but Kenneth Burke gives his opinion of what irony is. He says, “Irony arises when one tries, by the interaction of terms upon one another, to produce a development which uses all the terms…they are all voices, personalities, or positions, integrally affecting one another” (432)....

...explain how things work or it can give the directions to accomplish any task given. One wants to assume that ones audience will be able to follow the directions given to them in ones writing. The essay will also have to be clear so the reader will not get lost. Writers have to specify the materials that ones own readers will need so that they can be ready before starting the process. Making extra comments in the essay will help the audience visualize the process. One also needs to include what to not do like caution the readers. Kahn uses the rhetorical appeals, her story is also in process writing, and lastly she created a multimodal essay. Kahns’ purpose of “Stripped for Parts” was informative, because Kahn is explaining the process of an organ transplant happening in front of her eyes. Kahn uses the ethos appeal as in this example, “Someday, I’m convinced, transporting organs in coolers will seem as strange and outdated as putting a patient in an iron lung. I get on the plane with the heart and the kidneys”. She uses these sentences to show credibility to herself. Kahn also uses the pathos appeal in her essay saying, “To me, he looks fine. His face...

...The Case for Polyamory In this essay, I am going to argue that it is possible for a legitimate romantic relationship to include more than two adults as long as everyone is freely participating and is fully aware of the circumstances involved. While monogamy still represents the ideal form of romantic relationships for many people, some would argue that it is simply not a realistic practice and not the only relationship choice that can work. Polyamory is the practice of having more than one romantic relationship at the same time. This is accomplished by everyone’s full knowledge and consent. Polyamorists place so much emphasis on having an honest, responsible and open communication in their relationships that they are able to overcome issues of jealousy. And lastly, by the acceptance and consent of all the parties involve, a person is able to have an extended support network that they can connect with on both the emotional and physical level. These premises are how I am going to argue my case for polyamorous relationships. What is polyamory? Polyamory is the practice of having a romantic relationship to include more than two consenting adults. I point out “consenting” as an important piece of the definition because a central principle of polyamory is garnering your partner’s consent to date, have sexual relations with or even fall in love with multiple people. The notion of consent to me is significant in that I think it is a necessary condition in order for this type of relationship...

... The “American dream” is what we all strive for. Immigrants come to the States in hopes of trying to achieve their dreams and better themselves for their families. But in all honesty what is the American dream? It was once said that you could come to America and go from rags to riches; you could come with nothing and achieve everything. So, is the so-called “American dream” dead, alive, on hold, or is the definition of the said dream changing? This has been a searing topic and a widely debated discussion since the recession started. Brandon King seems to think the American dream is in fact alive and is simply just changing it’s meaning due to our economic hardships. He “would redefine the American Dream today as the potential to work for an honest, secure way of life and save for the future” (611). King believes now people are tolerable with a middle-class lifestyle and just want to have a stable employment. To him, the American dream is very much alive; it’s just morphing and changing the meaning due to prolonged economic circumstances. King uses logos to adapt a form of credibility and prove he is knowledgeable. He quotes study after study and provides statistics from the year 2005 to 2010 which all makes his argument very convincing. King starts both ethos and logos for the essay when he gives a background for the American dream. “The original term ‘American Dream’ was coined during the Great Depression by James Truslow Adams, who wrote that the American dream...

...Arthur Miller wrote his essay titled “Tragedy and the Common Man” in 1949. This essay explains Miller’s definition of a tragic hero as well as why a common man has as much ability to be the hero of a tragedy as someone of nobility. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 that dramatizes the Salem witch trials of the late seventeenth century in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In the play, the town of Salem falls into hysteria after Reverend Parris finds his daughter, niece, and their friends dancing in the woods with his slave Tituba. The young girls claim they have been bewitched by people in the town to avoid punishment, although, the punishment then comes for the accused regardless of their innocence. ...Ethics Essay Sharon Batts ETH/316 February 10, 2014 Professor Heller Ethics Essay Ethical growth is an important instrument needed in today’s society. Virtue, deontological, and utilitarianism theories have similarities and differences. Each theory relates to morals and ethics in precise ways, just as virtue, values, and morality have a precise relationship with one another. Virtue theory relates to ethics by identifying the character of a person as honorable, dependable, loyal, honest, or as untrustworthy, deceiving, careless, or self-serving. Basically a person is described as “good” or “bad”, or a mixture of both. People develop character throughout life as a mirror image of his or her morals. Virtue ethics define a person’s character more so than his or her actions. The downside of this theory is that it does not make allowance for good people who make bad mistake (Garrett, 2005). A teenager may give into peer pressure to steal a car. The teen may have high morals and ethics, but made a foolish decision. Virtue theory defines the teen as a bad person rather than as a good person who did a bad act. The next ethical theory, utilitarianism, focuses on determining the choice for the actions and the choice made depends on the course of action that has the best consequences for that person. The actions of a person are believed to be morally correct or incorrect based only on the outcome of the actions. Therefore, if the result is good, the action is morally right. On...

...The applicant need not provide a warranty in assurance that he will never again breach the public trust. The issue is his character today, not his risk of re-offending.” The test emphasizes that good character is not fixed, and that it can change with time. However, the test does not address what actually constitutes ‘good character’. The lack of a clear definition of good character has led to variability in the application of the good character requirement. This is a major problem, as it is difficult to predict whether an applicant with a character issue will be granted or denied a license to practise law by a Canadian Law Society. The following cases demonstrate inconsistencies in the application of the good character...
