Courage I remember the sinking feeling and the tears that filled my eyes. I tried desperately to keep them from spilling onto my rosy cheeks, but it was no use, so I let them come. Through the tears I could see my mother and siblings gathered on the living room floor, crying as well. The darkness and dreariness outside reflected my feelings inside. As I’ve grown, there have been many attributes I have lost and gained through experiences. All of these experiences have defined the person that I have become, however there is one experience that seems to stand out more than the rest. The days I was ailing, Courage stayed by my side until I became healthy again. The times I felt somber or deserted, Courage would cheer me up. When strangers would near our house he would give a warning, and if necessary he would bravely chase the danger away. Courage scared a lot of people with his massive size and his powerful bark, but he was the gentlest, kindest animal I have ever known. Whenever I needed to be courageous in school, at dance, at home, or wherever all I had to do was think of Courage. If my dog was courageous enough to chase away real danger, I could be courageous enough to do whatever it was I needed to. Such as, give an answer in class, perform a dance, or learn to be self sufficient. One day my mother had to go to town to run some errands, so my older sister, Rebecca, and I were left home alone. We were in the living room when suddenly, Courage began to pace back and fourth along the edge of the carpet where it met the tile of the kitchen. Rebecca and I got terribly thirsty and tried to go into the kitchen to get ourselves some water. Courage wouldn’t let us, no matter what strategy we came up with; he just wouldn’t let us in the kitchen. What neither of us knew, was the gas on the oven had been left on. There had been a terrible accident an unbelievable tragedy. Courage, my best friend, my hero had been trying to get a treat, but missed and bit a friend of my little sisters. Because of his size and strength it ended severly disastrous. My father had to explain to me that tomorrow the police were going to come and take away my best friend, and he would be going to heaven.
