The body is mostly made of water, two-thirds actually. It is vital for the body's organs to function properly that the body is well hydrated. The amount of water that the body needs can be affected by several things. The environment, the things we consume in what we eat and drink, and the amount of activity all play a major part in the water requirements our body needs. Water is the lifeline that our body needs to run. Proper hydration helps in the control of body temperature. Water also helps the body carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells throughout the body. It helps to remove waste from our bodies as well as to cushion joints, balance minerals and finally to maintain the proper fluid levels in the body. The levels of caffeine and alcohol that someone consumes can also greatly effect a persons hydration level. Studies done of caffeine show that blood flow to the kidneys increases. The study also shows that the body does not reabsorb calcium, magnesium, and sodium properly when larger amounts of caffeine are present. Caffeine will also increase the amount of blood that flows into the kidneys. The detrusor bladder muscles are stimulated and can cause the body to produce more urine output. While these things happen within the body when caffeine is present it would take large amounts of caffeine a day for it to affect the body in a noticeable way, usually around 6 cups of coffee or 10-12 cups of tea. Alcohol is far more impacting on the body. Alcohol is a diuretic which causes the body not to reabsorb water as well as increases the urine output of the body. Alcohol will also prevent the body from maintaining the proper levels of nutrients like potassium, sodium, and zinc. The body needs the proper amount of water or damage can be caused. Even a relatively small amount of water loss can effect the body's performance in exercise. Even a drop in water as little as 3% can significantly cause the body to decrease the amount of blood pumped when the heart beats. Without the proper blood flow cells in the body could not receive the correct amount of nutrients and oxygen. Dehydration can also cause the loss of blood volume within the body. This can reduce the amount of blood that flows to the skin and alter sweat production. When the body cannot cool itself the way it needs to then the core temperature of the body can increase. With an increased body core temperature there is a greater chance of heat related problems. There are different severities of dehydration. For example if body is only slightly dehydrated then thirst can be the first sign. When the body is dehydrated as little as 1% the body can be effected by small amounts of cognitive and physical performance. At 3% the blood volume can be decreased. At this level a dry mouth and decreased urinary output can be expected along with a further decline in physical performance. When the body reaches a dehydration level of 5% it can become difficult concentrating. Labored breathing when exerting one self and dizziness can occur when the body is 8% dehydrated along with mental confusion and indistinct speech problems. Delirium, muscle spasms, and wakefulness can occur at 10%. Renal failure and a critically low blood volume can occur at an 11% dehydration level. Electrolytes are important to the body as the proper amount is needed to help prevent dehydration. Electrolytes and both positively and negatively charged particles that are regulated in the body by the kidneys and hormones. These help maintain the levels of electrolytes in the body. Physiologic function may be disrupted in the proper balances of electrolytes are not met. Some common imbalances are with sodium and potassium electrolytes. The fluid levels of the outside cells are regulated by the sodium. It allows the cells to hold water which is part of the process in staying hydrated. Potassium works in conjunction with sodium to help balance and maintaining fluid in the body. When a person sweats sodium and potassium are the most common lost electrolytes which are important to aid heart and skeletal muscle contractions, nerve impulse transmission, with the processing of carbohydrates. If potassium levels are very high or very low it can become a life threatening problem.
Dehydration can damage the body in a very short time, especially if exposed to harsh conditions. When someone is exercising it is vital that they increase there water intake. The natural environment can also be very critical to your hydration level. The same activities that are done in winter can be deadly if not better hydrated when performed in the summer. Living in the desert I have noticed how quickly one can become dehydrated in a very short time. By the time your body tells you that you need water you are already partially dehydrated and if the environment is extreme it is possible to become extremely dehydrated before your body has the chance to show you.
