Our bodies are made up of mostly water. What does that mean? Exactly how it sounds. Water is found in every part of the body; from tissue, to muscle, and in the bone. Bodies depend on water for lubrication, protection, oxygen in the blood (which too is mainly water), in addition to the delivery of nutrients throughout the body. Consequently, water is essential to the survival of human life. Most importantly, bodies do not store water, resulting in obligatory consumption of water on a daily basis to replenish or restore water that was lost through evaporation or urination. Each person’s body is different, so the best way to configure how much water to consume on a daily basis is to ask a doctor or trained physician.
Dehydration occurs when a body is losing more fluids than is consumed, and does not have adequate amount of water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. Water is crucial in maintaining fluid balance throughout the body. Our bodies require adequate amounts of water in our system to regulate body functions and remain healthy. Some examples of what water does for our bodies are; moistening the eyes, help with chewing and break down of food through the mixture of saliva, and to lubricate and protect our bodies joints. So, the most important task of water is its controlling response to chemical reactions. Water is essential in regulating and maintaining our body’s temperature, assuring it is constant. If the body is not maintaining a constant temperature, a fever will produce, causing the body to sweat. Sweat is the evaporation of water from the body, which essentially lowers the body temperature. Additional task of water is its capacity to be solvent. Water subsidizes in chemical reactions because so many substances such as amino acids, minerals, or glucose can liquefy in water.
At the point, a body becomes dehydrated, the mouth will turn out to be dry. Additionally the body will have no urination for several hours, no tear production, eyes come to be saggy and the body becomes very lethargic and lazy. Adequate water consumption is suggestively good for digestion. However, once a person gets dehydrated, the entire metabolism method is distraught. When a person’s water consumption is inadequate, his or her blood pressure will be low and the heart rate is very sluggish. If a person's body does not acquire plenty of water, the results can be potentially fatal, especially if not treated immediately. In the event of dehydration the body will begin expending the only supplies available. If the body is not cured immediately with fluids, the body will respond by going into shock. Shock occurs when the body is flabbergasted with the aptitude of compensating for the loss of water, causing the blood pressure to fall, and organs begin to malfunction or possibly fail. For example, kidney failure is a result of dehydration. The most disturbing reaction of dehydration is death. The reduced blood supply to the brain incites confusion and could possibly result in a coma. Death occurs quickly as the body cannot function any longer without adequate amounts of fluids and water.
The body has three main electrolytes that are used for its main function; to regulate blood pressure. Those electrolytes are; sodium, potassium, and chloride. Every body movement entails electrical currents throughout the body and is possible by these three charged ions. Sodium is a positive ion that functions to provide nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and fluid balance. If our bodies do not have an adequate amount of sodium, symptoms, such as muscle cramps can occur. Processed foods and table salt are great food sources of sodium. The second electrolyte, known as potassium is also a positive ion that functions to provide nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and fluid balance. If our bodies do not have an adequate amount of potassium, a symptom, such as fatigue can occur. Vegetables and fresh fruits, such as bananas are great sources of potassium. The third electrolyte, known as chloride, is a negative ion and functions to provide fluid balance. Bodies lacking an inadequate amount of chloride will not be subjective to any major symptoms, such as a potassium or sodium deficiency.
Alcohol and caffeine have unscrupulous effects on a person's body in regards to their hydration levels. Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics. Diuretics encourage the body to exert more water than it consumes by faltering the production of the body's anti-diuretic hormone. In other words, the body will feel the need to urinate overly, thus increasing the loss of fluid from the body which outcomes dehydration. Alcohol assaults the storing of vitamins and minerals, which are needed in the accurate balance for the body to function normally. Dehydration triggered by drinking can disturb the balance by draining potassium from the body, ensuing thirst, muscle cramps, dizziness and faintness. When a person consumes excessive amount of alcohol, he or she will have to vomit, which also leads to dehydration.
The best possible way to ensure a body is not dehydrated is taking actions to prevent it. The best prevention method is for the body to be in a comfortable climate. In the event the body is in an extremely hot climate, it is important to consume several amounts of fluids or water. Avoiding things such as over exercise, hot weather, consumption of alcohol or caffeine are helpful tips to prevent dehydration. Fluids that encompass the necessary electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, or chloride, are essential to provide the necessary minerals to alleviate the body from dehydrating.
In the event the body begins to show symptoms of dehydration the following treatments can be engaged. An oral treatment can be used such as encouraging a person to eat Jell-O, drink clear broths, or consume popsicles. If the body is not showing results of replenishment through the oral method; it is highly recommended to seek medical attention. A person who seeks medical attention for dehydration will be connected to an IV, or intravenous tube; resulting in direct fusion of water fluids into the body. The young and elderly are very susceptible to dehydration and it is highly recommended for them to be vigilant and constantly have water or another substitute close in case of water loss. Water contains all the minerals, calcium and other nutrients required for a body to be thriving and healthy. In conclusion, it is essentially imperative to consume an adequate amounts of water if one desires to be healthy and fit in life.
