Part B – Critical Analysis

An artwork can be an intimate glance into an artist’s soul, art is one of the most raw and personal ways of expressing one's emotions. Artist’s experiences and interactions influence the creation of their work. Many artworks are representation of an artist's life, it is easy enough to analyse a work but to fully understand it you must know the artists context how they were raised, where they went to school, relationships, travel or what actually lead to their love of art. Del Kathryn Barton an Australian contemporary artist is known for her vibrant highly patterned works that combine traditional painting techniques with contemporary designs and illustrative styles. The highly detailed and precise work is very labour intensive, every stroke, dot and run of paint counting in the final composition was precisely placed.. The attention to detail almost overwhelms the subject, as the image merge into and out of each other, the two main figures though have a detailed abundance of paint fuse with its surroundings through the contrast between the colours used in the highly detailed background. The attention to the decoration is typical of Barton’s practice. Surreal figures and creatures are rooted into their environment, with tendrils and vines a fusion of creativity, multi-breasted women glittering birds and furred animals. nature and humankind are fused together in harmony rather than alienated. The work explores sexuality, through multiple exposed female genitalia and the relationship between human and nature. The confronting but deliberate beauty of Barton's work stuns more than it unsettles. "all I can say is my work dose mean. Everything to me , it's like a life
