In recent decades, many people have sought refugee status and this has caused a lot of discussion on the issue. Many argue that refugees should not be given priority in gaining entry to democratic countries, while others believe they should. The purpose of this essay is to point out that democratic countries should have an obligation to accept refugees. To support this position, the following areas will be examined: firstly, the reason why those countries are called democratic countries. Secondly, refugees are under the difficult situation. Thirdly, countries can take advantage of accepting refugees. A democratic country is defined as a form of government in which all the people have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. In order to deserve that, a country needs to fulfill some basic requirements. One of the most important is to guarantee the basic human rights, which is international norms that help to protect all people everywhere from severe political, legal, and social abuses. It helps for students to be able to discuss the questions and readings with other students. If so, it is absolutely essential that students read the assigned articles in advance of the discussion. They will need to consult the readings to find pertinent passages, but if they are reading it for the first time during group work, they will either not finish or not contribute. I remind my students of this fact several times in the days leading up to the project. If students don’t finish during class, they can finish at home. If done in groups in class, you may wish to suggest that a different student act as recorder for each block of questions. Also, assign a different student to be the discussion leader/gatekeeper to keep the discussion on track and prevent any single individual from dominating the discussion. The end of the Cold War is usually seen as the beginning of the contemporary era in world politics which is the subject matter of this book. The chapter shows how the dominance of two superpowers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union, was central to the Cold War.
