Hidden inside his poem is a cunning criticism of the society that helped create the catastrophe over the stolen lock in the first place. Pope’s classical beliefs in God as the source of identity were profoundly challenged by the society in which he lived, where appearances were more important that a person’s sense of identity. On the surface, The Rape of the Lock appears to be simply a humorous poem making light of a real event. Pope uses the depiction of Belinda and the Baron, through the stereotyping of gender roles and the frequent use of irony, to show the inability to gain “true” identity in the existing social world of his day. By simultaneously criticizing Belinda and portraying her as the “hero”, a double meaning is achieved. Pope successfully uses Belinda as a commentary through his use of irony about the superficiality of her world and by pointing out the gender stereotypes inherent in it. To prove his point, Pope must first illustrate Belinda as the goddess she believes to be. Throughout the poem, Belinda is described to be “the fairest of all mortals” and by the superficiality of her appearance is thus elevated to a high position in her society, and in the poem (Pope, Canto 1, 27). ...John Keats – La Belle Dame Sans Merci La Belle Dame sans Merci, one of John Keats last works, is a ballad which tells the story of a knight who fell in love with a mystical creature, and now suffers the aftermath of a broken heart. The poem starts with the writer describing a solitary knight who is walking around lonely. So already from the poems start the reader gets sympathy for the knight. In the two first verse, the scene of autumn is described: The grass stopped, no birds sing, squirrels and other animals have hoarded food to sustain them throughout winter, and the harvest is done. The writer makes the knight look so exhausted and miserable, by saying: So haggard and woebegone. By saying this, it makes the knight seem to be in a terrible condition: “And on the thy cheek a fading rose – the poet is comparing the color on his cheeks with a fast fading rose. The poet also says: I see a lily on thy brow – which means that the knight-at-arms forehead glistens with sweet like a lily (white). In the fourth stanza the knight starts to tell his tale: He had met a beautiful maiden in the meadows. ...The Love and Grief of the speaker for Annabel Lee Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” is one of his most famous and well-loved poems and contains themes that appear in many of Poe’s work, such as the death and burial of a beautiful woman, undying love, and deification of her memory. It was written in 1849 and was published shortly only after Poe’s death that same year. Aside from “The Raven”, “Annabel Lee” as Brod Bagert stated is marked by a deep sadness over the loss of a loved one (4). Seeing as the structure of the poem is almost as if someone were telling a story, the audience may very well be any attentive group of listeners, listening to a love story. In the poem, the speaker is an individual love-struck by Annabel Lee. The poem's speaker describes his love and the love he shares with Annabel Lee, which began many years ago in a so-called "kingdom by the sea". Though they were young, their love for one another burned with such an intensity that as the speaker tells even the powerful forces such as death can’t keep him and Annabel Lee apart.
