Demonstrative communication is a form of communication which is used regularly by all, in all situations, whether it be on purpose or habit. It is an unwritten communication and involves such things as facial expression, tone of voice, body language and even movement of the eyes. Demonstrative communication can both be extremely effective or it can be detrimental to a conversation and either negative or positive to the sender and receiver. I can think of many times in my life where I have used demonstrative communication because I thought it was relevant and useful at the time. But I never thought to think about what the receiver of such notions would feel. If my body language was not fitting of my words the receiver would immediately assume to follow the story my body is telling and not my words. For example, if I was talking to my mother when I was a child and she was listing off all the chores I had to get done for the day, there is no way that I would say no to her. But, when she was telling me these things my mouth was saying, yes yes yes, but my eyes rolling and my relaxed demeanor would tell another and it would always make me look like a slacker who didn't care even though it wasn't intentional. Also the way I answered the commands with a long stressed, “Yessssssssssss, ok,” made it seem like I didn't care due to the fact I might not have subconsciously cared about the chores I was being asked to do. But this is the negative side to demonstrative communication. What about the positive effects it has on the sender and receiver? Its hard to imagine body language playing a positive role in the situation I have just described. But, thats because in my opinion it cannot. If we look at a completely different situation in life though we can see how body language, tone of voice and almost all forms of demonstrative communication can be very beneficial for both the sender and receiver. And this situation is male and female interaction on a social level. When two people from the opposite sex are discussing something at some type of social gathering whether it be a highschool house party or a hotel bar on a business trip, demonstrative communication is extremely important. When a person is discussing things with another person at this level body language means everything. There have been countless studies on how even the arms play a major role on whether or not a girl is interested in you. If they are crossed it usually means no. If they are open and used in the conversation with small movements and such it means usually she is comfortable and open to discussion. When I man begins to lean a lot or even lean towards you it usually means he himself is interested but if he has hands in pockets looking around everywhere else but at the female then it usually means the opposite. Little things like this affect our daily lives so much it is a wonder how more people don't know about the effects of demonstrative communication. In my opinion demonstrative communication involves more than just movements though. On a higher level it also involves listening and responding. It has been taught in elementary school to almost all of the US that listening is key, and it is true, it is one of the most important lessons you will learn at that age. Listening and then responding is such a huge factor in demonstrative communication because how you do these two acts determines how the other person will respond to you and determine whether it will positive or negative. Why would anyone gun for a negative outcome in their conversation? So in conclusion I would say that demonstrative communication may be even more important than just straight up conversation because you can see right to the core of what this person is thinking. Do they like you? Do they like what you have said? Do they understand what you actually mean? Do they feel hurt by what you have showed physically during the conversation? Becoming a master of demonstrative communication or even just learning more about it can help you greatly in your own lifetime and should be pursued by all students at this level of learning.
