DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION The Department of Education is in charge of overseeing the country's school system, particularly in the Basic Education Department. The DepEd handles the overall administrative process of elementary and secondary schools and it also issues Memorandums and Orders on anything related to the management of schools in the whole country. It is authorized to launch nationwide programs which usually aim to improve the conditions of public schools. Its vision is by 2030, DepEd is globally recognized for good governance and for developing functionally-literate and God-loving Filipinos. Furthermore, its mission is to provide quality basic education that is equitably accessible to all and lays the foundation for life-long learning and service for the common good. As a concerned Filipino citizen, I think it is imperative for me to know about the latest DepEd memo or program because as the Department in charge of the country's Basic Education, it should be where I gather my sources or knowledge about changes that may occur in our curriculum that could affect the children’s future. One thing I noticed is that school nowadays has now finally shown its cracks and holes that is drastically affecting our society. School punishes people for making mistakes. The punishment could be in verbal, psychological, or sometimes physical form. How does that happen? When you made a mistake or did not comply to a certain curriculum, you would be told you are wrong or even get scolded or be punished by being given low grades. This type of system puts a great amount of pressure on a child to always perform well and to not do mistakes. It programs the mind of a child with a simple yet very destructive thought: "I have to perform well or I won't amount to anything." There's nothing wrong in performing well. But with this kind of thinking, a person would now start to

...DepEd chief: Moving start of classes to September will only benefit some areas KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMA NewsAugust 14, 2012 3:30pm  61  4  2  1307   Tags: Department of Education Moving the opening of classes to September will only benefit some areas and not the entire country, Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro said Tuesday. "When I looked at the data it looks like there is very little additional advantage, benefit for schools if you look at things nationwide," Luistro said at a Senate hearing on the K to 12 basic education program. Luistro said that proposals to move the opening of classes from June to September will probably just benefit the National Capital Region (NCR). "Obviously we cannot have a different start of the school year recognizing that the country may have different ways of experiencing the weather," he said. "I think the benefit of moving it to September may be confined to maybe NCR and a few other regions, but that may not necessarily translate to additional safety realities for the other regions," he added. Two climate types PAGASA acting deputy administrator for research and development Flaviana Hilario explained that the country has two climate types: Western areas of the country such as the NCR and Central Luzon fall under type 1 climate, which experiences rain from May to September. Eastern areas such as Aurora and the Bicol region experience type 2 climate, with their rainy season lasting from October to January...

...Improved English proficiency among Filipino adults ‘surprising’ This post was written by Hannah L. Nepomuceno, a senior mass communication student who is earning her summer internship credits with the PCIJ. MORE Filipinos say they have a better understanding of the English language now, based on a recent survey by the Social Weather Stations, but the results do not appear very convincing to some. Results of the survey done from March 30 to April 2 this year, as compared to the outcome of a similar polling in March 2006, showed “recovery in all aspects of English proficiency, most notably on the ability to speak English,” observed Mahar Mangahas, SWS president and chief executive officer. (Download the survey results here.) Moreover, the results showed a significant improvement in self-assessed English proficiency among Filipinos in the last two years after a decline over the previous 12 years. But Edilberto de Jesus, former secretary of the Department of Education, said the survey results were “surprising considering a turnaround in just two years,” expressing his doubts on the accuracy of the respondents’ answers to the survey. Of those surveyed, three-fourths (76 percent) of the adult respondents say they understand spoken English, compared to 65 percent in March 2006. In September 2000, comprehension of the English language was at 77 percent, which was an improvement from 74 percent in December 1993. The same SWS survey in April showed that: * 75 percent say they...

The Status of Jejemon Language: It’s Impact to Academic Performance of the Learners

...language or the wellspring of youthful creativity, it pays to take a moment or two of objective reflection before simply declaring it as just another nuisance that must be stamped out. The jejemon culture spreads rapidly bringing out both good and bad reactions in the educational setting.  As a new language that is made up of mostly symbols and phonetics, it alarmed the Department of Education in the Philippines. Mona Valisno, a representative of DepEd told parents to keep their kids from falling into the Jejemontrap before they forget how to spell the actual words in English or Filipino. As a conclusion to this remark on jejemon, the issue became the center of educational debate especially in the secondary education particularly the public schools in the Philippines. The term jejemon is derived from “jejeje” and Pokemon. “Jejeje” is the linguistic representation of laughter in Spanish. The “jejeje” variant is preferred among Jejemons as they use it in their text messges rather than the typical “hehehe” variant. The”mon” in Jejemon is borrowed from Pokemon. According to The Philippine Daily Inquirer and Urban Dictinoary, a Jejemon belongs to a new breed of hipster who have not only developed their own fashion and stereotype, but also subverted the English language to the point of incomprehensibility. This change in language often results in general confusion between Jejemons and other people who are used to normal English or Filipino. In a society where misunderstandings are commonplace...

Topics Im Confident to Discuss

...1. The aftermath of Typhoons and monsoon: DepEd oblige schools to do make-up classes after a row of class suspensions last week • A big part of Luzon has been flooded due to southwest monsoon caused by typhoon Falcon last week. The bad weather condition affects schools, colleges and universities in metro manila and in different parts of Luzon that suspends classes for 3 consecutive days. It is to ensure the safety and security of the students. In return, the students will have to compensate all the suspensions with make-up classes to complete the 201 calendar year imposed by DepEd. School division superintendents will be the one to decide what type of make-up classes will they implement. It’s either make-up classes that will fall during weekends, or by simply extending the class hours during weekdays. These make-up classes are effective for both public and private schools. • It is interesting because I can relate to the topic. As a college student, I am personally involved and concerned with the issue and it has a direct effect on me. • I don’t have any negative reaction on this issue since It’s caused by natural calamities and no one wants it to happen, so make-up classes is a good alternative. I think same goes for college students like us. It’s just right to have make-up classes because we’re paying a big amount of money and we will just get nothing in return? So those 3 days is a huge loss for us and we need to take them back through these make-up classes. My other concern...

K To12

...K to12 for Quality Education Joel A. Pol-ocan K to12, though already implemented is still a major issue in the country. Filipino people cannot accept the fact that our education is now prolonged. Some are arguing that K to12 is not the solution to improve the quality of education while other’s concern is to lessen the burden of the parents and children particularly those who are living in poverty. Well, for us, we cannot blame those people and they are not pessimistic because what they only want is to have assurance of a better and long term future based from the decisions that our government is making. I strongly believe that the implementation of the K to12curriculum is an assurance for quality education if implemented properly from the higher ups down to the four walls of the classroom. I've said this because as we observed from those countries who belong to the first and second world countries, they don’t have just have 12 years but more than and see they are very progressive. Let’s take United States for example, they follow k to 15 curriculum, their government is very supportive to education, see what is America. One of the essential components of the K to 12 curriculum is the implementation of Mother Tongue Base Multi-lingual Education (MTB-MLE) in which the first language will be the medium of instruction from kinder to grade 3. I am certain that the MTB-MLE is also beneficial in attaining quality education. Studies show that students learn better when taught...
