ARE WE TOO DEPENDENT ON TECHNOLOGY?

Introduction

Today, when were driving our cars, following a GPS, and talking on the phone we can wondered if we are too dependent on technology. It feels that recently, more and more people have become less connected with the real world and more connected with 'cyberspace'. Today, less people sit down to lunch and have a conversation without an interruption from a Smartphone buzzing on the table. Hardly anyone can go a day without posting a status on Facebook or sending out tweets or even constantly messaging their friends. While this all is very convenient and enjoyable, it makes us wonder…What would it be like if we all put down our phones and computers for a week and really lived life, a life outside of the confines of a cyber world. Maybe if we did this, we would be able to hold a conversation face to face without the risk of feeling uncomfortable. We wouldn’t have to wait for the delay of technology to keep us feeling secure in replies. Maybe, we wouldn’t all hide behind the mask of “a profile”. Maybe more people would be genuine and more honorable. We are all fans of technology and how much easier it makes life, however, we do feel that if individuals were less dependent on it, we would live a much more ‘real’ world. Our purpose it to expose the true colors of technology, in order to answer the question; are we too dependent of technology?

Motivation

The motivation factor which made us decide on the topic of this thesis is the fact that we have come to the realization that most people are too dependent on technology.

As civilization advances we depend more and more upon our inventions and creations. We could live without them but not all of us will want to, not even for as long as one day.

Without the advances that we have made in medicine, for example, many others would have much shorter life spans

Digital Media

...The media of mass communication have long played a fundamental role in people’s lives. The media informs, persuades, entertains, and even sells. For the most part; mass media is only owned by a few private companies, as we learned in the “media ownership” discussion. According to the “Telecommunications Act of 1996,”, this act was to spawn some competition the broadcast companies. It also eased the restrictions on the number of television stations one individual company can own. The media, controlled by power corporations and government organizations, has positioned itself to influence people in all manner of ways, but no one group controls the system as a whole. 90% of all television media is controlled by only six broadcast corporations. Media can provide companionship, shape perception. They are fundamental to an informed and educated public.(Pavlik, McIntosh 2004). “An important aspect of digitization is that the boundaries between different media have brought into question, and a presupposition has the developer that we are in an era of media convergence” (Storsul,Fagerjord (2008). Strosul and Fagerjord believe that “blurring the border between media does not have to mean convergence. There is also development toward stronger differentiation of media in which elements from earlier separate media and sectors are combined in new ways.” In communication, there are three forms of interpersonal, intrapersonal...

Enterprise Architecture

...Article Essential Layers, Artifacts, and Dependencies of Enterprise Architecture By Robert Winter and Ronny Fischer Abstract After a period where implementation speed was more important than integration, consistency and reduction of complexity, architectural considerations have become a key issue of information management in recent years again. Enterprise architecture is widely accepted as an essential mechanism for ensuring agility and consistency, compliance and efficiency. Although standards like TOGAF and FEAF have developed, however, there is no common agreement on which architecture layers, which artifact types and which dependencies constitute the essence of enterprise architecture. This paper contributes to the identification of essential elements of enterprise architecture by (1) specifying enterprise architecture as a hierarchical, multilevel system comprising aggregation hierarchies, architecture layers and views, (2) discussing enterprise architecture frameworks with regard to essential elements, (3) proposing interfacing requirements of enterprise architecture with other architecture models and (4) matching these findings with current enterprise architecture practice in several large companies. Keywords enterprise architecture, architectural components, architectural layers, architectural views, interfaces ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE: DEFINITION According to ANSI/IEEE Std 1471-2000, architecture is defined as the “ fundamental organization of a system, embodied in...

Technology: Beneficial or Harmful?

...Professor Elahi English 201 16 July 2013 Technology: Beneficial or Harmful? Throughout the vast history of humanity, humans have always used their innovative and cognitive skills to create tools to better improve their chances at survival on this planet. This technology advancement first began in the Stone Age when man fist discovered that stone could be utilized as both a harvesting tool and hunting weapon; which gradually developed into spears, bows and arrows, and swords. And as time pressed on, one of the most important and influential inventions since the beginning of time was designed in the shape of a circle: the wheel. However, unlike in earlier times, the evolution of technology in the past 60 years has been growing so rapidly that society has scarcely been able to keep up with it on a global scale. And due to this accelerated development of technology, accurate assessment and critical reflection on our dependency of these new technologies has been greatly hindered. So if one were to consider all the consequences and results of today’s technology objectively, could our dependency on modern day technology be viewed as positive or negative outcome? Both sides of this argument have solid, valid claims, but do the pros outweigh the cons or are the benefits of technology not worth the potential harm it can cause to our society. As the advancement of technology drastically rises, society’s dependency for these technologies also rises, however, this correlation can...

Modernization and Dependency Theory Paper

...Abstract Over the past hundreds of years our world went through many social and economical changes. After the birth of the industrialized society, our world economical growth was fast. Many scholars and researchers have been trying to understand why the developing nations are still under developed. The modernization and Dependency theories will explain some of our world socio-economic differences between the developing and developed countries. This essay discussed about the major differences between Modernization and Dependency theories, and their impact on the developing nations. Modernization Theory A theory designed to explain the process of modernizing societies. The theory considers the internal factors of development of any country, based on the installation, that the "traditional" countries may be involved in the development the same way as are the developed countries. According to Gavrov (2005), modernization theory endeavors to recognize the social variables, which add to social development and expansion of society, and will attempt to elucidate the procedure of social development. At the same time Gavrov (2005) stated that none of the scientists does not deny the process of modernization of society (the transition from traditional to industrial society), the theory itself has undergone considerable criticism from both Marxists and the representatives of free-market ideas, and supporters of the theory depend on the reason that is a simplified representation of...

People Are Too Dependent on Computers

... Computers have revolutions the world as seen it. Economy relies on the e-commerce transactions to make business and increase profits. But, people have been affected as well; society relies on computer technology in every level. With the integration of the internet, the dependency on computers has increased dramatically. What is the result of the side effect of having computerized our world? It seems it was just a few years ago when computers were exclusive for businesses using mainframes to process calculations. But, computers have gone from a luxury to an everyday need. The benefits from computers have revolutionized the entire world. In the old days, telecommunications were limited; telegrams and letters were used as a medium of sharing information before technological advancement was developed. Now, computers have changed the telecommunications. People can “surf” on the web and visit any country in the world in less than 30 seconds, book a flight in 5 minutes or purchase a pair of jeans in 2 minutes. The internet was invented with a different purpose that is it today. The main focused of the internet in the 1950s was to connect with point to point communication including, computers, mainframes or terminals for military purposes. As technology evolved, the internet changed with it. Online purchases have revolutionized the market. Customers are able to purchase online products and never leave their house. Nowadays, the internet is the main source of information...

Abstract— Software developers many a times use different tools, so that we could find and come to know about dependencies of any particular module/system on the repository before we make changes to it. This is done in order to avoid adverse effects because of changes and hence to avoid failures related to it. Keywords— Software Dependencies, Systems, Dependency errors, Software failures. Introduction AS WE WORK WITH GEOGRAPHICALLY DISTRIBUTED SOFTWARE, THIS APPROACH CREATES PROBLEMS. WHEN WE WORK WITH MODULES AND THERE IS DEPENDENCY BETWEEN THEM WE FACE PROBLEMS LIKE COMMUNICATION PROBLEM, WORK COORDINATION, ETC. RESEARCH ARGUES THAT DISTRIBUTED TEAMS DO BETTER WHEN THEIR WORK IS ALMOST INDEPENDENT FROM EACH OTHER. IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, MODULARIZATION IS THE TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE. THE MODULAR DESIGN ARGUMENT SUGGESTS THAT BY REDUCING THE TECHNICAL DEPENDENCIES, THE WORK DEPENDENCIES BETWEEN TEAMS DEVELOPING INTERDEPENDENT MODULES ARE ALSO REDUCED. THIS DISSERTATION ARGUES THAT MODULARIZATION IS NOT A SUFFICIENT REPRESENTATION OF WORK DEPENDENCIES IN THE CONTEXT OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND IT PROPOSES A METHOD FOR MEASURING SOCIO-TECHNICAL CONGRUENCE, DEFINED AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STRUCTURE OF WORK DEPENDENCIES AND THE COORDINATION...

Media and the 20th Century

...contributed to major changes in society throughout the 20th century. However, these changes not only affect society but it has also affected the way business is done today. With the dawn of media convergence, globalization of media, audience dependency, concentration of ownership, and issue of media literacy; all the parties in the mass communication process are forced to think dramatically about their positions in it. Mass media can affect knowledge, attitudes, opinions and behavior of individuals. These effects can be immediate or delayed, for a short duration or long-lasting. II. With the development and evolution of media, we find that media convergence and media dependency have become a major factor in how society is affected and the way we respond throughout our everyday life. Encyclopedia Britannica (2013) states that, “Media convergence, a phenomenon involving the interlocking of computing, and technology information companies,  telecommunications networks, and content providers from the publishing worlds of newspapers, magazines, music, radio, television, films, and entertainment software. Media convergence brings together the “three Cs”—computing, communications, and content.” There are two levels of convergence, technologies which use broadband or wireless network delivery for industry-standard digital forms that they will display on various computer or computer-like devices such as laptops, cell...

White Noise Essay

...White Noise: The Representation of Technology Technology has become an indivisible part of our modern lives. It is present everywhere one looks and life without it would be impossible. In White Noise, the notion of modern technology is represented through the interaction between people and machines and our dependency on them, the steady flow of media affecting us daily, and the dangers technology poses for humankind. In White Noise, technology makes its presence known in the way we depend on and interact with machines. An example of this is Jack’s use of the ATM machine when his financial calculations are confirmed and a sense of peace and comfort seems to overcome his uncertainty (Sparknotes), “What a pleasing interaction. I sensed that something of deep personal value, but not money, not that at all, had been authenticated and confirmed” (DeLillo 46). An instance where our dependency on the use of cars for transportation is shown at the very beginning of the novel, “The station wagons arrived at noon, a long shining line that coursed through the west campus…The roofs of the station wagons were loaded down with carefully secured suitcases full of light and heavy clothing; with boxes of blankets, boots and shoes…” (DeLillo 3). Another occurrence of people’s dependency on the use of machines is throughout the airborne toxic event when sophisticated equipment and measuring devices need to be used to figure out the contamination levels and to protect the rescue personnel...
