This paper explores the human brain and what happens when a traumatic event disturbs the
chemical balance or calibration of its functions. The writings of Nadia Harris and Adam Piore
(2013) explore these questions by studying and observing the journey of Derek Amato an
individual that had unique adverse effects following a brain injury, in this case a concussion. The
work of John Powell (2001) aids this exploration by defining and describing symptoms,
treatment and other effects of concussions. This paper goes over the origins of Amato’s accident,
the preceding symptoms, the after effects, the treatment and the successful nature of such things.
This paper also discusses the region of the brain affected loosely, while bringing up…show more content… Concussions are injuries to an individual’s head, such as vigorous shaking, a violent
smack or another force, that slightly alters their brain functions, the typical symptoms are
memory, balance, coordination and concentration difficulties usually accompanied by headaches.
Most of these heal up within a few weeks, some as soon as a few hours (Powell et al, 2001).
However some concussions come with adverse effects. The works of Harris, Piore and Powell
discuss the definitions, probable causes and effects in regards to one, now famous individual.
Derek Amato is an example of these unique outcomes. A few years ago in October of 2006,
Amato miscalculated his jump to catch a football during a pool game. His head smashed with
tremendous force against the concrete leaving the 39 year old sales trainer with 35% loss of
hearing in one ear, explosive headaches and only partial memory (Harris et al, 2013). However
what Amato got in return was miraculous, he now functions as a musical genius.
Now music is already a hard medium to learn and be proficient in. This talent is
