...No. 2, April - June 2010 pp. 41-49, ISSN: 0973-2470 Capital Structure and Product Market Determinants: Empirical Evidence from the Indian Automobile Industry Himanshu Joshi This paper provides insights into the way in which the capital structure is determined by product market determinants, research and development activity and profitability. This paper is an attempt to test relevance of empirical evidences found in matured markets to the Indian market condition. Automobile industry is taken up for the study because of its oligopoly nature and easy availability of product prices. Some of the results are very different from the similar studies conducted in the advanced economies. It is found that the firms in the same industry can have different capital structures and there is a negative correlation between the profitability and capital structure of the companies. Interestingly, no correlation is found between R&D expenses and capital structure of the company. It was also concluded that no extra market power is attained because of high leverage. Keywords: Capital Structure, Product Market, Market Structure, Profitability, Market Power, Capital Expenditure Introduction Capital structure refers to the way a corporation finances its assets through some combination of equity, debt, or hybrid securities. A firm’s capital structure is thus, the composition or ‘structure’ of its liabilities. The modern theory of capital structure began with the celebrated paper of Modigliani...

...Determinants of FDI THE POWER OF FDI IN REGARDS TO GLOBALIZATION: Globalization is an inevitable and irreversible process, and dealing with the imperatives of globalization capitalizing on its positive aspects and mitigating the negative ones is perhaps the most important challenge for today. Globalization has enhanced the opportunities for success, but it has also posed new risks to developing countries. Globalization has many faces; however, globalization is first and foremost comprehended in economic and financial terms. In this sense, it may be defined as the broadening and deepening linkages of national economies into a worldwide market for goods, services and especially capital. Perhaps the most prominent face of globalization is the rapid integration of production and financial markets over the last decade; that is, trade and investment are the prime driving forces behind globalization. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been one of the core features of globalization and the world economy over the past two decades. It has grown at an unprecedented pace for more than a decade, with only a slight interruption during the recession of the early 1990s. More firms in more industries from more countries are expanding abroad through direct investment than ever before, and virtually all economies now compete to attract multinational enterprises (MNEs). This trend has been driven by the complex interaction of technological change, evolving corporate strategies towards...

Rio.nugroho@student.ssb.ac.id Abstract Introduction Capital Structure is a factor which essentially needed by a corporate. It is about how a firm finances the overall operations and growth using its combination source of fund. DER (Debt to Equity Ratio) is most likely ratio when talks about capital structure because it related to firm’s leverage. The interpretation of the relationship is when a firm increase the debt and holding the equity constant, DER will goes up. It will be followed by increase in levered value and attractiveness of the firm even though become riskier. Otherwise, there also another beneficial reason of using debt to do the operation and activity of the firm which is the presence of tax shield. Firm will be more profitable because the income will be taxed lower unless; in one condition tax could be zero. Moreover, there was a big question about “How do firms choose their capital structures?” Proportion of capital structure should be made based on calculation and analysis of a company needs. When the measurement is not critical or without good analysis...

The inconclusiveness of the theories on importance of dividend in determining firm’s value has made it one of the most debatable topics for the researchers (see for example, Ramcharan, 2001; Frankfurter et. al 2002; Al-Malkawi, 2007). The present study investigates the impact of firm specific characteristics on corporate dividend behavior in emerging economy of Pakistan. Three years data (2005-2007) of 100 companies listed at Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) has been analyzed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. The results show that managerial and individual ownership, cash flow sensitivity, size and leverage are negatively whereas, operating cash-flow and profitability are positively related to cash dividend. Managerial ownership, individual ownership, operating cash flow and size are the most significant determinants of dividend behavior whereas, leverage and cash flow sensitivity do not contribute...

Herani** A. W. Rajar*** and Wahid Farooqi**** ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to determine the factors that influence a firm’s choice of capital structure in three Asian countries: Japan, Malaysia and Pakistan. The specific objective is to investigate if country’s economic factors play a significant role in determining capital structure between markets. These countries are chosen in order to represent three different stages of economic development. Literature review reveals that considerable research has been made in the industrialized countries on the similar topic. Capital structure is one of the most complex areas of strategic financial decision making due to its interrelationship with macroeconomic variables. This study reveals that per capita GNP growth for Japan and Malaysia is significantly related to capital structure of firm and higher...

...DETERMINANTS OF FDI IN CHINA DETERMINANTS OF FDI IN CHINA Shaukat Ali and Wei Guo1 ABSTRACT Why and how firms take advantage of foreign opportunities, especially via foreign direct investment (FDI) has been much documented. China, as a major emerging market, has attracted significant flows of FDI, to become the second largest receipt. This paper briefly examines the literature on FDI and focuses on likely determinants of FDI in China. It then analyses responses from 22 firms operating in China on what they see as the important motivations for them to undertake FDI. Results show that market size is a major factor for FDI especially for US firms. For local, export-orientated, Asian firms, low labor costs are the main factor. The paper concludes with managerial implications for businesses wish to exploit opportunities in China. INTRODUCTION The past few years has seen a tremendous growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) that has exceeded both world output and world trade. China is by far the largest recipient, and in 2004 surpassed the USA as host destination. It has consequently attracted an increasing attention from multinational businesses. Since China adopted the reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s, foreign investment has played an increasingly important role in its economic growth. According to the World Investment Report for 2004 by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, China absorbed a total of US$53.5 billion worth of ...

...still remains a mystery to be solved. Lintner (1956) contends that it is current earnings and the past dividends which determines the target dividend ratio in the developed market. The firms have to make various adjustments in order to attain such target and thus have to follow a stable dividend policy [2]. Miller and Modigliani(1961) argues that since market perfections, zero transaction costs, perfect certainty and indifferent behavior of...

...Institutions matter for attracting foreign direct investment? Academic literature review 1.1 The position of FDI in international capital flows Vast research is focused on financial liberalization and capital inflows as a consequence of it. The main findings were that capital inflows volatility is more severe in developing countries than in developed ones, and that this cannot be explained by the level of changes in fundamentals (Broner et al. (2005)). Because of the existing global economy, small negative shocks in one country will lead to asset pricing deterioration worldwide and the total effect would be relatively large; international capital flows are the most significant reason of these changes (Mendoza et al. (2010)). Most of the studies doubt that foreign capital flows are a reliable platform for the development of emerging economies. However, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is claimed to be of a different nature. According to the definition given by the World Bank, it consists of an acquisition of ten percent or more of voting stock (it might be equity capital, significant intercompany borrowing and lending, or earnings reinvestment). Lipsey (2001), in his historical study of 3 financial crises –(Eastern Asian, Mexican and Latin American), proved that FDI is more resilient to downturns in economic conditions than other forms of foreign capital. Moreover, Makki et al. (2004) found a significant positive effect on internal investment and economic growth from FDI. That is...

...Determinants of exports CHAPTER I 1.1 INTRODUCTION There are theoretical literatures which predict the proportion of a firm's sales that is exported, i.e. a firm's export intensity. Mostly, exporting is merely regarded as an interim stage in the development of a company, preceding foreign direct investment or, in some cases, licensing and foreign direct investment. Consequently, theoretical contributions are primarily concerned with the relationship between exporting and foreign direct investment and the optimal timing for switching between these alternative market entry strategies. In contrast, there are a large number of empirical studies which investigate various determinants of export intensity. The majority of the past research, however, is recognized to be of an electic nature (Bilkey, 1978) and judged to suffer from methodological flaws (Reid, 1980). Exports have been growing much faster than GDP in most countries. For some developing countries, exports are indeed the main element of production, apart from some agricultural sector and from basic services. The aim of this paper is to explain the determinants of firms export and to combine them into a coherent econometric model. The parameters of this model are subsequently estimated for a sample of large scale Electronics companies. The Electronics Industry in India took off around 1965 with an orientation towards space and defense technologies. The period...
