Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
In this assignment I am going to explain the role of effective communication and interactions used, relating all work back to a health and social care environment. I am then going to explain the different concepts of communication and explain Tuckman’s and Argyles’ theories of group interaction and communication. Finally, I am going to discuss the role of effective communication and interpersonal interactions and explain how these may impact on the health and social care services provided.
‘A speaker transmits a message and must ensure that the message is delivered clearly. A listener takes delivery of the message and must be an active listener. Effective communication takes place only when the listener clearly understands the message that the speaker intended to send’ (www.icre.pitt.edu). One-to-one communication plays a very important role in most people’s lives. This type of communication is most often used face to face but can be used via texts, emails and telephone calls. This type of interaction often involves a three-stage process; greeting/warm-up, conversation/information exchange and farewells/winding down. In the greeting stage it is important to create a positive emotional atmosphere, most people usually say ‘Hello’ or ‘Good morning’. Once a positive, friendly atmosphere is achieved, you can continue to the conversation exchange. Here, the information or subject you want to talk about is exchanged. The final stage is the farewell stage, in this stage you leave the person with a positive atmosphere and say something like ‘see you soon’ or ‘goodbye’. One-to-one communication is very important in the health and social care sector. For example, care workers talk to their colleagues, their patients and to their relatives on a one-one basis daily.
