...My life’s direction and purpose has not always been clear, but more of a muddled path with multiple turns, bumps, and progress along the way. Pursuing higher education and continuously developing new skill sets have always been personal objectives for me. I have learned through my life lessons the basic value of self-improvement. An MBA would enhance my capability to independently assess multiple situations, develop a rational plan and execute the plan. Obtaining an MBA will present new opportunities for me to figure out where I want to work and study. My success in life will be enhanced when I complete an MBA and pursue a new professional career path. As an undergraduate student, I majored in biochemistry. I believed having a scientific background would give me the skill set to lead me wherever I wanted to go in life. However, by the time I entered my junior year I was in serious doubt regarding my degree decision and my passion for biochemistry. After discussing my options with my parents, we came to an agreement that I would finish my degree because it would give me a solid foundation with a technical education. The biochemistry curriculum exposes participants to high levels of proficiency in math, logic, and problem solving. Additionally, the curriculum promotes the development to work independently and think creatively about potential solutions. I finished my degree but continued to feel very sceptical about pursuing higher education because I wanted to make sure I chose...

...Undergraduate business majors are a dime a dozen on many college campuses. But according to some, they may be worth even less. Now faculty members, school administrators and corporate recruiters are questioning the value of a business degree at the undergraduate level. The biggest complaint: The undergraduate degrees focus too much on the nuts and bolts of finance and accounting and do not develop enough critical thinking and problem-solving skills through long essays, in-class debates and other hallmarks of liberal-arts courses. Companies say they need flexible thinkers with innovative ideas and a broad knowledge base derived from exposure to multiple disciplines. And while most recruiters do not outright avoid business majors, companies in consulting, technology and even finance say they are looking for candidates with a broader academic background. Firms are looking for talent. They're not looking for content knowledge. Students are motivated only by grades and instructors by evaluations. But Dr. Mason believes it offers a fair approximation of reality. In a 2003 paper in the Economics of Education Review, he buttressed that model with a national survey of 259 business professors who had been teaching for at least 10 years. On average, respondents said they had reduced the math and analytic-thinking requirements in their courses. In exchange, they had increased the number of requirements related to computer skills and group presentations. It has become difficult to give...

...future growth of our small country, is a remarkable one. I am writing to you to let you know that I am one of those Marshallese out there who still has a burning desire after graduating four-year college to continue on and earn a Master degree in Business Administration. I have been accepted to Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University. I am confident that I will make it, but I will need the full financial support of your board of directors if I am going to get an MBA. Like Benjamin Franklin once said ‘An Investment in knowledge pays the best interest’. I can guarantee the Marshall Islands board of directors that once I get my MBA I will be back and be an asset to our country. I have done it before with my undergraduate degree and you can bid I will do it again. Getting an MBA is not going to be easy, but I will give it all I have to push through the end. I am convinced the bright future of our young nation is in the hand of our educated young leaders and scholars. When I first wrote to the Marshall Islands Scholarship board of directors...

...The "treadmill of consumption" refers to the consumption of material goods in which people think they will become happier just by acquiring more material goods. People over consume and are never satisfied with what they already have but rather aim for more and bigger things. Under the treadmill of consumption people become very competitive as well as greedy and have the need to over consume in order to feel happier or more gratified. Studies have shown just the opposite that by over consuming does not lead to happiness but rather to the contrary. As people accrue more and more material goods they usually do not become happy or content but rather raise the ladder for more consumption. One day they will realize that all their means have been depleted and happiness has still not been attained. Moreover, consumption has increased globally due to the growing industries and population. The treadmill of consumption has lead companies to respond to high consumer demands and to produce more consumer goods because they recognize this vicious cycle that so often occurs. This has helped companies become more profitable by keeping the materials plentiful for the needful consumer. Subsequently the environment has suffered in many ways because more and more resources are being obtained from the earth in order to keep up with the consumer output. This is especially true in the energy industry because more energy requires more natural resources which are not infinite. The theory behind...

...Joey Laratta English 121 Professor Katie Leber 9/10/13 The Barriers to a College Degree Postsecondary education is almost a requirement in today’s society. The value of a college education is incomparable; as of now, six out of every ten U.S jobs require a degree. Statistics show that there are numerous barriers making it difficult for certain genders and races to enroll and attend college. For example, men versus women, lower class individuals versus higher class, as well as African Americans and Hispanics versus Caucasian and Asian ethnicities. Studies show that women, of the same race, income level and academic preparation as men, are more likely to enter college directly proceeding high school because they take the time to research certain colleges and their requirements. They aspire to be college students more than their peer male classmates. Therefore, men are less motivated and less eager to attend college. Although lower class families may find it difficult to afford a college education, there are resources in order to gain assistance and be successful. Financial Aid is an option for anyone although it was primarily established to help the low-income families. “Simply informing individuals about their aid eligibility does not appear to improve college access… The real barrier is the complexity in actually filling out the form and finding the time to complete it” claims Eric Bettinger, a professor at Stanford University. Studies found that individuals who...

...I started off my undergraduate career studying Biology, focusing on microbiology and physiology. I later changed my focus of study to Africana Studies only because the university that I attended was heavily impacted in my department. Had I stayed in that course of study, I would have probably taken longer to complete my degree as opposed to the 4.5 years it took me to receive my BA. School can often be a challenge because of any and everything that we have going on in our lives, but I do love learning. I enjoy being in a classroom setting and bouncing off ideas from my peers. I find that it can be difficult to find the energy to attend classes, be it in the evening or on the weekend only because I do work full time and work schedules can often be demanding. Furthermore, although I enjoy a class setting, I do like completing projects on my own, as you are not dependent on another person and will never be in a position to pull another persons weight. During undergrad, I worked in retail as it allowed me to work when I was available. Currently, I work for a start up, SoFi Lending, where we specialize in refinancing student loans and also offer personal loans and mortgages. The jobs that I’ve held have helped me to develop my skills in customer service and communication. Recently, I’ve learned quit a bit about mortgages, deciding factors for offered APRs as well as loan operations. These skill are ones that I am certain I’ll use in future. In my spare time, I love to relax. My...

...Undergraduate studies lead to associate's and bachelor's degrees and that graduate programs lead to master's and doctoral degrees. I believe that the undergraduate learning experience is a period where there is the introduction to new information. This information is enclosed in subject area of concentration that is delivered by your instructor. My year of undergraduate program is more general in nature. They include general education courses in a wide variety of subjects that are not part of graduate education. Graduate programs are highly specialized and much more advanced than undergraduate programs. Graduate educational experience teaches you the information and skills that you need to be a professional. However, being a professional requires more than coursework and experiences. In other words, you will learn the norms and values of your field. You will learn to think like a professional in your field, whether a scientist, historian, educator, philosopher or practitioner. I would describe a graduate learning community as a group of students and staff that share the same interests in objectives based on an area of study; that allow these people to learn, grow and develop together. Learning Communities bring people together for shared learning, discovery, and the generation of knowledge. Within a learning community , all participants take responsibility for achieving the learning goals. Importantly, learning communities are the process by which individuals come together...

...11/12/13 It has always been my childhood dream to attain the highest education possible. Unfortunately, this dream has eluded me several times due to reasons beyond my control. Despite all the elusions and roadblocks I experienced on my journey to fulfill this dream, my determination and desire has never faltered. This is because I kept my eyes opened and focused on future. My parents separated when I was in 10th grade and things became very tough for me but I was able to graduate from grade school in Nigeria with the little help my mom could provide financially. Unfortunately things changed when I got to High School. Unlike Grade school, high school was not free of charge. Parents pay tuition and buy school materials. This was very difficult for my mom because I wasn’t the only child attending school. Three of my younger siblings were also in school and mom had no lucrative job. We all lived on an income ...

...Academic interests and goals Life is a continuous learning process, which requires a strong method to develop better ways of apprenticeship. Coming from an immigrant family and watching your parents struggling to provide the basic living conditions to you and your siblings isn’t a happy picture. Unfortunately, it follows me every day in school and work. Having in mind what sacrifice my parents did to give me a better education and life, has made me think more seriously about my education, career and personal goals. Thus, being able to obtain a higher education gives me an opportunity to be better in many ways. Everyone should have many goals in life in order to survive, prosper and succeed in every journey that life gives. Education is the most important aspect in people’s life. In today’s society education is essential in order to be successful economically and socially. This is because education provides boundless opportunities. During my days as an undergrad student here at Clark University, I came across various options for a choice of career and perceived chemistry to be challenging, versatile, innovative and evolving preference of many other students. Though it attracts many, only a few are able to make a mark and I want to be amongst them. I always wanted to work in the healthcare industry because it affects people’s life and also it is known worldwide as an industry with a high potential for growth, development and innovation for a better living. Having read...

...Educational Preparation Daniela, Ticarat Jan, 26 2014 Educational Preparation A nurse is a person who has passion for her job and a divine calling to finish that job. This person has compassion for the defenseless, patience for those who needed most, and knowledge for the powerless who can benefit from it. In order to answer this calling a certain level of education is required. The choices that have to be made are whether to prepare at the Associate Degree level versus the Bachelor Degree level in nursing. It is quite clear that, this choice remains with the individual. There is strong belief, based on evidence, research and personal experience to acknowledge the differences in competencies between Associate Degree and Bachelor Degree in nursing. One difference between Associate Degree Nurse and Bachelor Degree Nurse is the number of credits require for each. While Associate Degree requires 72 credits, Bachelor Degree requires 125 credits. Another difference, is the fact that a Bachelor Degree nurse has a better knowledge of the subject matter. The BSN graduate has a better ability to incorporate, assess, communicate, teach and lead while performing their duties. A candidate with a Bachelor Degree has a higher chance for advancement to positions such as: director of nursing, research nurse or managerial...

...The Value of Tuition Reimbursement Theresa McKinley University of Phoenix The Value of Tuition Reimbursement Tuition reimbursement is a program that every company should consider. By having benefits such as tuition reimbursement, I believe that OptumHealth New Mexico will see a large return for its investment. Educational assistance for employees will support the company’s commitment to cutting-edge innovation. The importance of degrees and credentials is important in our company’s marketing of its employees to its consumers. OptumHealth New Mexico can benefit from investing in employees’ education for many reasons. Educated employees produce improved skills and knowledge to the job, adding to better productivity and performance; employees with advanced education can be promoted to positions of greater responsibility; the company would retain valuable employees; turnover would decrease, and there is an atmosphere of motivation and morale that create an encouraging and supportive environment. Employers who offer tuition reimbursement are normally at an advantage over companies that do not offer it. The organizations that do not offer this benefit may lose potentially valuable new talent to the companies that already offer this incentive. According to the Society for Human Resources (SHRM), education assistance is important to 20% of potential recruits under the age of 35, but only 4% of those over 55. (Browning, 2005). Companies that have employees with...
