Sociology is based on the analysis of human behaviour in society, what their views are, what their opinions are on a variety of topics; all and any social behaviour is guided by values, so to have a value free sociology? Nor would it be impossible, but it would cause a break down in all of what sociology really stands for and is made of! There are one too many factors that alters ones research, whether it is sympathies, opinions, hierarchy and though sociology tries very hard to make itself value free it becomes something out of our control when it happens unconsciously.
As Becker states in “Whose Side Are We On” we are not able to avoid taking sides because of the ideas around social structure and the study of deviance, it really becomes impossible to avoid any unconscious opinions from personal and political sympathies towards investigating topics.
Another point Becker explains is “the hierarchy of credibility” prevents us from forming value free results; the ones are the top are to be seen more credible than those on the bottom. Society has shown its tendency to accuse those who are on a superordinate side rather than subordinate because of its social norm, and how all members of our society have accepted this credibility to be taking sides of accusation made by superordinates, for example: responsible officials. We are bound to rely and assume that the man on the top of the hierarchy knows best and to agree on his side, without even consciously knowing about it at times. Or if you were to think about it the other way, while a group tends to agree with the higher officials, there are many members of society that decided on taking the side of the subordinates.
As human beings we are very sentimental, sympathy will arise whether knowingly or unknowingly and we will always end up taking one side of an argument
