As a reader, there are many qualities that are looked for in a book before starting to reading, especially for certain types of books. In fictional works, people look for the mystery, the comedy, the fantasy, the magic, the action, and of course, the romance. These genres are important factors in fictional works, they attract the reader. In nonfiction works, there are different things that are at play here, too. For nonfiction novels, they are based on true events, due to this, the author has to work harder by making his story factual but interesting. They would not be able to recall or care about events without the qualities because they are what make the events memorable in a novel. For example, one of the books that contain this “timeless quality” is The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Eric Larson. In this novel, the Chicago world fair of 1893 is being written about, along with the horrendous things that occurred there, but also the magnificent things that really changed the way people felt about America. It changed their perspectives about others, as well as, making the people question how “secure” and “safe” they really felt. The author uses detail and is able to incorporate these details effectively with the facts to make it indelible to the audience. This fair was first brought up to commemorate the landing of Columbus in America, to show our pride in him doing so. The people wanted a location that was grand and would definitely catch the eye of other nations or places, leading to many calling out “choose me!” The fair was almost placed in New York, Washington, or St. Louis, but it ended up in Chicago. How did this occur? There was a large vote, whether it should be in the capital, Washington, the center of everything, New York, or the prideful and the hardworking people who rebuilt their city after the Great Fire of 1871, Chicago. Due to all the controversy of where it should be placed, a vote was cast and Chicago won. The author, by giving these descriptions, allows the audience to visualize the places, to see the options of where this fair could potentially be located. This allows the author to mix a small description of the places with the grand fair, and allows them to sort of get the idea of why the fair was placed in Chicago.
