Devil’s Advocate Critique In the play “Devil’s Advocate” by Donald Freed, it talked about people making choices between the good and evil. Making decisions is a very hard thing to do between the choices. It makes people have a hard time to making decisions or escape from those choices. The play takes place in Panama in 1989. It is in the Christmas Eve of 1989 and the time of the American invasion of Panama. There were only two characters act on stage in the play. Those characters are General Manuel Noriega and Archbishop Laboa. General Manuel Noriega is the Panamanian strongman who had worked for the Central Intelligence Agency since 1960. Archbishop Laboa is a famed Jesuit luminary. In the United States invasion of Panama on Christmas Eve 1989, President George H.W. Bush had woven together a tissue of lies and provocation to justify bombing and occupying a sovereign nation, Panama, in order to make what appeared to be a drug bust. General Manuel Noriega was the target of the cosmic sting. He refused the demands of the Ronald Reagan administration. Archbishop Laboa offered him sanctuary, but General Manuel Noriega had to against him. It is hard for him to made a decision. The playwright’s purpose was trying to tell people about the politics. However, the play also told people that when you have to make decisions, you should follow your heart. Do not let others take control of your decisions. If we do not make decisions by our own, we might feel regret about it.
I think the acting in the play was outstanding. Those two outstanding performers did a great job. I like how Noriega acted he is scare or serious when he needed it. I think he had good acting. There was a scene needed him to take off his clothing and wear his uniform. I think he is a good actor because he sacrifices for the play. I was shock that Noriega pushed Laboa when there was a scene that he had to push Laboa. I think that Laboa was old and it was dangerous for Noriega to push him. I think he is also a great actor because he put himself into the play. All the elements of the production seem to be unified and to fit together. I like the scenery in the play. When I first came into the room, I was shock by the stage. The stage was so special. The stage was like a picture, a place that I have never saw. The stage displays many props. They took care of every little thing in the play. They had a telephone in the table. The telephone in the place, which I think it matched the time of the play. I like how they put the book under the bed and all around the bed. It might make the audiences feel that the stage is really a home. There was one prop that I think it was interesting. When General Manuel Noriega came into the room, he had his gun with you. I think the gun was closely to a real gun. Archbishop Laboa took out a pot from the room and tried to cook for General Manuel Noriega. The costumes in the play were great. Noriega had his robe and his uniform. I think the uniform looks great. I like the lighting in the beginning of the play. When the play started, all the lights in the room were turn off. Then the light focused on Archbishop Laboa. I think the light will make people to pay more attention to the stage. When we had a break after the first part of the play, the lights turn off again, which it made the audiences not able to see where the actors went. The play taught me a very important lesson. It told me that evil dwells in humanity and people create their own hells on earth. We should make our own choice. We should follow our heart. Do not listen to what others told us to do. We should take control of our own destiny. No matter our decisions are right or wrong. At least we do not feel regret about the decisions we made.
I like the scenery of the play because I think the props were match the time of the play. I also like the lighting in the play. It made all the audiences concentrate on a specific character. I do not like the play that much because I do not like plays that have few actors. In the play, there were only two actors and mostly the play was that two characters talked together. The play had little actions. It was opposite of what I like. I like plays that had many actions. From those actions, I can see what the actors are trying to tell the audiences.
I personally do not like the play much because I do not interesting in politics, but I like the playwright’s purpose which beyond the play. However, I would recommend the play to others who like politics because the play is mostly about politics. If people that are not interesting in politics, they might sit there in the theatre and sleep for two hours and think that the play is boring.

Faust and Devil's Advocate

...Professor Vickey Daley English 236 8 October 2014 Vanity and Greed Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s literary work of the story “Faust” can easily be compared and contrasted to the film The Devil’s Advocate. Though there may be a large time span between the two works they both are able to convey the same main theme. By dealing with the ever present vanity and greed of human nature, both works are able to have the same major plot and theme though almost two centuries apart. Both have just about the same character relationship, the main character of the story is brought vain success by the antagonist and thus the antagonist is tries to make a deal to the protagonist to sell their souls. The first comparison between the story of “Faust” and the film The Devil’s advocate are the similarities between the two protagonists. They are both men who want more in life. In “Faust”, Faust is a scholar who wants to know the purpose of life. He is in despair about his life thus far and in search of purpose, love and power. He has had so many scholastic achievements he feels there is nothing more for him to learn from books. “Faust has studied all of the major subjects in which a Renaissance scholar could receive a degree, so can be understood to have exhausted traditional learning” (Brians 2). In The Devil’s advocate, Kevin Lomax is a vain lawyer in the small town of Gainesville, Florida. Though he is very successful as a lawyer there he isn’t doing or making as much as he knows he could and is seeking...

Minnesota V Riff

...Minnesota v. Riff The Minnesota v. Riff court case is complex and has different types of communication involved. In the case, both written and oral communications are presented. During this paper we will discuss the communication used for the prosecution, defense, witnesses, and the judge. We will also discuss the guidelines for each communication in the court case. The duties of the prosecution, defense, witnesses, and the judge are important to every trial. The prosecuting attorney communicates both orally and in writing. The main goal of this attorney is to prove that this defendant is undeniably guilty to the judge and jury. He does this by beginning orally with an opening statement, stating that Ronald Rift did knowingly commit the crime of Breaking and Entering (1) 2911.13 F5; and Burglary (1) 2911.12 F2; on 09/30/11 between 12:10 and 12:20 A.M. This was located at Marquette’s Market 1234 Main St. Midtown, Minnesota 44333. The owner is Speedy Marquette (owner of Marquette’s Market). It is up to the prosecution to share all written evidence with the defense attorney before the trial and to present all evidence against the defendant to the judge and jury. It is also up to this attorney to introduce the witnesses for the prosecution and to examine them orally before the cross examination of the defense attorney. The witnesses: Soapy Waters, Otis Ripple, Marty Martini, Betty Bitty, C. Sharp, Guido Concertino, Rusty Fender, and the arresting officer are orally examined by the...

Report

...Courtroom Observation and Report I attended a session in Courtroom 265 on September 20, 2012. The 28-year-old Defendant was being held in the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Center on 3 separate charges, and this trial was his sentencing hearing. While the Prosecutor and the Defendant’s lawyer waited in front of the Judge, the Defendant appeared on the television screen. His lawyer said that he was pleading guilty to mischief, possession of a weapon, and violating his probation. The Judge told the Defendant that the Prosecutor will explain each charge, and he can either agree or disagree with what has been said. The Prosecutor started with the case of mischief. On June 26th, the Defendant’s parents phoned police because their son had wrecked their home while they were out. When they returned, they found him outside breaking windows with a hammer. After the Prosecutor finished, the lawyer revealed that his client suffers from schizophrenia. The Judge asked the Defendant if this series of events was correct, and the Defendant said yes. His guilty plea was accepted. In the weapon possession case, the Prosecutor explained that some City of Edmonton workers were fixing a sidewalk when the Defendant approached and started yelling at them for “destroying” the sidewalk. He then took out a hunting knife and began waving it at the workers, who retreated to their vehicle to call police. The responding officer reported that the Defendant mentioned he was not taking his medication...

Rumspringa In The Film Devil's Playground '

...Rumspringa is the time Amish children decide whether they want to be Amish or not. Rumspringa begins when the Amish turn 16 years old. Amish children tend to get real drunk on their 16 birthdays. In addition, some of them start to smoke during that period of their life. People tend to wonder how rumspringa encourage deviance, but in my opinion, when a young person decides to be disorderly and participate in deviant behavior they are making a choice of their own. When teenagers decide to take drugs, not follow the law, be violent or behave in ways that society do not approve of that can be classified as deviant. From the ages 16 and over, Amish children have to make a decision between following Jesus Christ or not because that’s know as an accountable age. I believe, that the children should not have to be pressured in to making such a difficult decision. People should be able to choose whatever paths they want to do in their lives at anytime. When the Amish decide to become Christian and baptized they are promising God that they are going to obey rules and regulations of the church. In which, I believe is very difficult because their lives are revolved around church and their little community, the Amish segregate themselves from the modern world. They do not used electricity and they create everything from scratch. The Amish do not own a Television, phone, car and more. During Rumspringa, the Amish youth tend to get cars and drive them around instead of riding on a horse wherever...

Focus Groups Should Use the Role of the Devil’s Advocate to Ensure Groupthink and Unethical Behavior Doesn’t Occur Among Group Members. • 1500 Words

...relationship between groupthink and unethical behaviour among group members. The first part of this essay will define unethical behaviour and the phenomenon of “groupthink”. It will describe how groupthink arises from extreme elevated negative group cohesion. It will outline the behaviour of groupthink dynamics (such as self-importance, over commitment, and excessive devotion to the group) and how groupthink dynamics contributes to unethical behaviour. Next, the essay will identify how groupthink has contributed to the unethical behaviour in the highest levels of decision making. The second part of this essay will identify the role and definition of the devil’s advocate, and how the devil advocate promotes positive communication. Finally, the essay will discuss the importance and the effectiveness of utilizing the devil’s advocate within group decisions for changing unethical behaviour within groupthink. Belonging to a group can promote negative cohesion as it promotes the probabilities of low quality decision making resulting in unethical behaviour among group members. The Oxford University Press (2015) defines unethical behaviour as “lacking moral principles; unwilling to adhere to proper rules of conduct”. Decision making in groups can be hindered by elevated cohesiveness and conformity resulting in the phenomenon called “Groupthink” it can transpire in the highest levels of decision making to the basic levels of social association (McCauley, 1989). Groupthink is the effects...

Few Good Man

...Few good man Time from time you may hear stories of abuse by the military justice "system". There are multiple destroyed and financially devastated families out there suffering heartbreak and loss at the hands of an uncaring, unfeeling and unjust process which makes a mockery of our Bill of Rights. Military justice for the majority is prefabricated according to the wishes of the local Commander, and the "trial" or "court-martial" is tantamount to a pre-ordained verdict of GUILTY. How could any court proceeding be considered fair when the "convening authority," by right of title, is given the power to select the judge, the jury and defense and prosecution attorneys? It may go "unsaid," but the implication is very clear - if the convening authority "sees fit" to bring about a court-martial, then the accused can be assumed to be guilty. What's special, or even topical, about A Few Good Men movie is it speaks to how military honor can be so readily suborned by the authoritarian impulse. And second, how the same honest pride - not to mention competence - is necessary to bring such posturing would-be tyrants to justice. The main issue the movie touches upon is military justice. A good marine abides by the following code: 1. Unit 2. Corps 3. God and 4. Country For this code to be at its effective best, it must be governed by truth and justice. What happens when truth and justice fail to be active participants of this code? Justice has been defined in many ways...

How Has Milton’s Paradise Lost Shaped Modern Depictions of Lucifer?

...How has Milton’s Paradise Lost shaped modern depictions of Lucifer? John Milton’s Lucifer has become so prominent in modern discussion of hell and sin that it is often confused with the theological account of the devil. Luciferian characteristics or depictions of Lucifer himself can often be linked back to Milton’s Paradise Lost and I will discuss multiple ways that Lucifer has become integrated into modern popular culture. From DC Comics’ Lucifer Morningstar to Walter White in Breaking Bad, I will show how Milton’s Paradise Lost has shaped modern depictions of the devil. Milton’s Lucifer was seemingly created from the influence of the Italian Renaissance devils of Giambattista Marino and Torquato Tasso. Lucifer’s ‘prissy disdain for earth’ and hatred of man in Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberta helped form Milton’s depiction of the character. Philip Beitchman suggests that ‘Milton saw Satan’s contempt for man formed from dust’, drawn from such lines as ‘Man, man the vile, born of vile mud’. This hatred is exemplified by Milton in the words ‘Woe to the inhabitants on Earth!’ paraphrasing the New Testament verse of Revelations 12:12. Beitchman suggests that Lucifer’s hatred is fuelled by the purpose of man, claiming that ‘it was standard wisdom that man was created to supply the place of fallen angels’. If man was created to replace him, then we can perhaps understand Lucifer’s disdain towards them in Paradise Lost. We ought to look towards Marino’s La strage degli innocent, in...
