Since the beginning of 8th grade, I have always wanted to be a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I began my journey by participating in the Medical Club through my high school. This club allowed anyone who wanted to pursue their dreams in the medical field to get a good look at what they were getting themselves into. We were required to accomplish two job shadows in the profession of our choice. I chose to do mine at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA in the Vascular Ultrasound unit. These experiences lead me to look into Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCHS) as an option after graduation. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) is a program that is offered at MCHS. A Sonographer is someone who uses ultrasound, a medical imaging of high-frequency sound waves, to produce images of organs, tissues, and blood flow and of the baby during pregnancy. …show more content…
In 1950, Howry recorded the first cross-sectional ultrasound with a 35-mm camera. It was not until 1951 when Howry and his engineers, William Roderick Bliss and George Posakony, developed the first clinically usable scanner. An immersion tank was made using a cattle-watering container and an ultrasonic transducer mounted on a wooden rail. A later version of an immersion tank was introduced in 1954. This transducer was mounted on a rotating ring gear form a B-29 gun turret that was also mounted around the rim of a large metal cup. In 1961, Howry’s group and two engineers, William Wright and Edward Meyer, developed a direct contact scanner but in 1962, after Wright and Meyer left, the group produced the prototype of the first hand-held scanner available in the United States. Fred Winsberg, a radiologist, traveled to Germany to see the first and only real-time ultrasound instrument in 1970. He was the first to use this machine at the University in Montreal, Canada, introducing it to North

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Essay

...Diagnostic Medical Sonography Boy or girl? As a Diagnostic medical sonographer, one could be the one to answer the big question for most families with the help of ultrasound technology. Besides babies, sonograms can also generate images of body organs and tissues to diagnose medical conditions. The process starts with placing a small device called a transducer against the patient's skin near the body tissue to be imaged. The transducer is like a microphone because it can transmit and receive sound. The transducer sends a stream of high frequency (depending on the frequency the sonographer has picked) sound waves into the body that bounce off the interior body. These sounds are analyzed by a machine to make an image of the structure on a television screen. It appears almost to be like an x-ray but slightly different and less dangerous to the body. Brief History of Medical Imaging

...Brief History of Medical Imaging Medical imaging has played a very significant role in medicine for over the last one hundred years. It is one of the most important diagnostic tools available to doctors and has revolutionized the medical diagnosis of patients. The use of medical imaging has enabled doctors to see inside a patient without having to cut them open. Medical imaging, especially X-ray examinations and sonography which is also known to some as ultrasound, is essential in an everyday medical setting. Preventive medicine as well as healing medicine depends on the proper diagnosis and treatment by physicians, and the use of diagnostic imaging can help evaluate the course of a disease, as well as assess and document the disease in response to the treatment. Medical imaging has rapidly expanded from the first medical image discovered by Professor Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. During a late night experiment in November of 1895, Roentgen, a physics professor from Germany, was examining Crookes tubes. He noticed that some light had managed to pass through a tube that he had wrapped in thin black cardboard, reflecting on the wall of his dark laboratory. Upon further investigation he found that the light could also be passed through paper, books, and eventually through human flesh. Unintentionally, he had stumbled upon a very important discovery that led to the discovery of what we now call an X-ray. One of the very first x-rays was one...
