...Alexandrea Winieckie Mr. Greenup English 101 8 January 2013 Diagnostic Essay English 101 is a requirement in order to graduate from SFCC, if we are pursuing a career field that does not require English why are we required to take it then? English 101 will help our success in other classes while in college and, our career. If English was completed all four years of high school, what necessary will we get out if it doing it once more in college; will it apply to our career, writing skills, or do we simply tolerate it to not obtain anything? English 101 is required for most schools but what essentially is being obtained, for most of us we haven’t utilized proper writing skills since high school. In many classes papers are part of the requirement to pass that specific class with English 101 to diagnose our current writing skills, we will be able to become stronger writers and, become familiar with different writing structures for essays. In the end altogether English 101 will better increase our knowledge of different parts of the essay, themes, punctuation, and the mechanics. Many careers don’t involve English although it is a very important skill to have for the future. Not everyone has the passion to want to become a publisher although while taking English 101 you might have had the passion for something else and, realize that English is something that you enjoy more. It may not be the most liked course but unlike any other class you may take in your college career...

...Abraham Lincoln once said, “Character is like a tree and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” Many people could take this quotation different ways, but it means a lot more to me than words a deceased man said in his lifetime. This quote inspires me daily, and has a great significance in my life, along with many others. In the comparison of a tree to its shadow, one could think that the shadow is merely what follows the tree. If this was true according to Abraham Lincoln, the reputation of what others think of us is just something that follows our character- who we really are. As I see it, the tree and the shadow are two independent things. One person could have the reputation of being a liar, a cheater, or even not worthy of respect; just because of a mistake made in the past. He/she could have the most respectable, noteworthy character; but nobody would know because of the shadow of reputation that follows. Personally, I have experienced a lot of people looking at my shadow, and not the tree in front. I moved to Madison Comprehensive High School in the fall of 2012, and at the time it seemed like a great idea. I had family in the school, and all my friends from church went to the school, so it couldn’t be too bad. My cousin was the captain of the cheerleading team, so I spent most of my time with her and her senior friends from the football and cheerleading teams. I met one of her friends named Allen, and...

...Reading and writing. Something I have hated since day one in elementary school, but started enjoying through my middle and high school years. Reading and writing is a amazing way of expressing myself. I enjoy reading way more than I do writing just simple because the story is already there and I just get to follow along and make a movie in my head. Like I shared in class, one of my favorite books is Where the Red Fern Grows Just because when I was reading that, I spent a lot of time out in the woods with my dogs. I was a very outdoorsy kid. I was drawn to this book because it was about a raccoon hunter that was my age, at that time, and he would go out and hunt raccoons with his dogs. Something I would do with my dogs, except no gun and no raccoons. When I finished reading this book, I wish the author, Wilson Rawls, made a second book so I could read it. There was another book about a dog that I loved. The book's title was Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. I read this book after I read Where the Red Fern Grow. It is also about a kid, my age at that time, and his dog. The kid, Marty Preston, finds a beagle up behind his home in West Virginia. The dog looks beaten and abused. Marty then cares and nurtures the dog back to good health and finds a new best friend. These stories got to me because they were emotional. I guess I loved them so much is because I love animals. Especially dogs. They are man's best friend. I would read in my spare time if I had spare time to devote to reading...

...Diagnostic Essay By: Allie Krieger Feb 6 2012 There are many great aspects to movies. Movies have an abundance of factors that can interest the audience who are viewing the film. A large factor that contributes to good movies and the emotions in movies are the actors that are chosen to play the main characters. Another factor that makes a good film is the plot of the movie because it carries the ideas and meaning of the film. The setting is the last extensive aspect of a movie because it helps the audience sense more emotion and personality. The actors, plot and setting are three immeasurable factors that add to the greatness of a film. Actors play a large role in films making the movie have feeling and interest. When you have good actors your movie is extremely interesting. Good actors make it easier to connect with the story. By seeing the actors portray the correct emotions, it adds dimension and makes it easy to connect with the film and understand the emotions being shown. When the actors learn how to work with each other and show chemistry throughout the film, it adds to the intensity of the movie and allows the audience to see the emotions in the story. When the actors show these two aspects throughout the movie, it makes you feel as if you were in the film and experienced the same things as they did. As much as a good actor can make a good movie, a bad actor can destroy one. Bad...

...Hannah Bacon-Dietz Mrs. Crosbie AP Language and Composition 8/17/11 Love Unmatched- Glass Castle Diagnostic Essay Even though the Walls parents from the Glass Castle were for lack of a better phrase, irresponsible and immature, they displayed a love and loyalty towards their family that is scarcely seen in today’s world. The children had a saddening and independent childhood with their parents often tending to their needs over their children. But throughout the entirety of the book Rex and Rosemary Walls managed to prove they loved their children immensely by never abandoning them and teaching skills they would later need in life. Rex Walls was there for his children when he could be, and taught them a sense of loyalty to family. He gave his children food for lunch when there wasn’t any at their house, “Then he declared more loudly, “No child of mine had to go hungry!”……Dad appeared in the doorway, carrying a grocery bag.”(78). He taught them, unintentionally, to be supportive and always there for each other shown in, “At lunch Brian and I say together in the cafeteria. I was pretending to help him with his homework so no one would ask us why we weren’t eating.”(78) And, “Maureen had fallen off the porch and gashed her head. When Lori heard that, she declared it was time for Maureen to more to New York, too.” (251) Rex and Rosemary also helped their children become better human beings and more caring as adults because of the neglect they received as children. The sadness...

...Diagnostic Medical Sonography Boy or girl? As a Diagnostic medical sonographer, one could be the one to answer the big question for most families with the help of ultrasound technology. Besides babies, sonograms can also generate images of body organs and tissues to diagnose medical conditions. The process starts with placing a small device called a transducer against the patient's skin near the body tissue to be imaged. The transducer is like a microphone because it can transmit and receive sound. The transducer sends a stream of high frequency (depending on the frequency the sonographer has picked) sound waves into the body that bounce off the interior body. These sounds are analyzed by a machine to make an image of the structure on a television screen. It appears almost to be like an x-ray but slightly different and less dangerous to the body. ...graduate one-day. Since I picked ENC 1101 to be one of my first semester college classes, it's been a difficult course for me. My lack of grammar knowledge, experience writing essays and organizing ideas are the three factors that made this college class challenging. Even though it's been hard on me, I now know how to write essays the right way and also how to organize my ideas so I have a clear vision of what I'll be writing about. This is really important to me because learning how to write properly will not only help me pass ENC 1101, but it will help succeed in other classes, life, and my future career. My ENC 1101 Professor Walter Hernandez not only motivated us to become better writers but also shared with us important tips regarding how to write like a college writer. He would always have a positive attitude, making the class amusing and enjoyable. The first week of school, Professor Hernandez showed the class "The ENC 1101 Survival Guide" which is a document containing essays written by Miami Dade College students that represent how his students made it through his class by becoming better writers. Therefore every time I need to write an essay, I always take a quick look at one of the writings in the guide in order to obtain ideas and tips on how to make my writing perfect. One of my favorite essays from the survival guide is "Tips to Succeed In ENC 1101" by Nathalie Silvera, where she explains and details step by step how she made it through ENC 1101 as a college student...

...what controversial (has more than one side / answer / opinion / etc) issues exist in your discipline / major and which are most interesting to you and/or relevant in your field today. To help you with that, you may want to move through the brainstorm / freewrite below to see if you can develop some of those ideas. You should use this to help you come up with ideas that you could discuss and develop on the DB. You may even want to post portions of what you came up with here on the DB. Thoughtful interaction could earn you some BONUS in the CE column and allow you to SPIN some ideas and nail down some solid topics. With that in mind, each student’s essay is to be unique with regards to its TOPIC / ISSUE / STANCE / ETC; therefore, the Board is meant to be a place to help shape ideas, not see one and “steal” it for your own essay. Topics will be reserved for those individuals who first bring them up and if similarities exist it will be the responsibility of the students to determine what different aspects of the issue will be explored by each (first poster gets first choice). I will NOT allow the “casual” student (one who is hanging around on the roster but not really submitting assignments and/or participating on the previous Boards) tell me at the last minute that “X” is his/her project when a conscientious student already articulated this on the Board. What you want to do is complicate the issue. Look at the issue from multiple perspectives and see what collaborations and...

...Diagnostic Essay The expectations I have for coming into English 11 would to learn and to grow my English skills, my assumptions about the reading would that they will be interesting, challenging reads, I have an array of strengths and weaknesses that contribute to the English student that I am. I can read well, but I don’t have the desire to read. I don’t like to read and don’t read that often, even though I should. I hope the year goes smooth and that I grow more in the pursuit of going to a good college and to have the skill set to write great, acceptable essays. My expectations for coming into English 11 would be to learn new concepts and to grow on the old concepts that I already know. I hope that English 11 takes me out of my comfort zone and focuses on more reading and analysis. That is a weak point for me, reading and then analyzing the passage or even a whole book. I hope to learn more about figurative language, because in some of my other classes the kind of advanced English is hard to understand, and the meaning behind some of the way the words are worded....
