...As a sophomore I feel that there are many practices used within the classroom that are very beneficial to students. However, there are some that I feel are just busy work and not useful when it comes time for a test. One practice used this year which I feel has not been helpful whatsoever are dialectical journals. Dialectical journals are a type of textual annotation used for readers to interact with the text they are reading. A student picks out an important quote from the text then either explains the quote, asks questions/makes a prediction, connects the information to something that has happened in their life or another piece of literature, analyzes/evaluates, reflects on what occurred, or interprets the meaning of a quote. According to Sussex Academy high school English teacher, Colin Marine, he assigns dialectical journals because they allow students to show their understanding of the text, and they are a way for him to tailor class discussions to the majorities of the class needs.
