...Amamie Obebieruan Jason Schaaf Modern Themes in History November, 18 2014 Paper 2: Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier In his “Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier” Jakob Walter writes about his experience as a foot soldier of Napoleon’s army during the campaign of 1806 and 1807, 1809, 1812 and 1813. As a diary, his purpose is not to expose his experience to the public, and as a result appears too simple to be written for historical purposes. Walter wrote it more like he was writing to his family, informing them of his hardship and his troubles; his every day experience and activity as a soldier. Being forcefully taken from his home, Walter is indifferent about the victories and failures of Napoleon’s army. He survives mainly because he wanted to reunite with his family; and not for the honor of being a soldier who fought alongside with the great Napoleon’s army. Walter’s diary is used to analyze the historical battles of Napoleon because in details shows the lives of the lowly soldiers and how they were treated during this time; however it doesn’t show credibility because only the perspective of an indifferent religious soldier is seen. We know from Walter’s diary that he is a Catholic. It is even surprising that he is fighting a war which is against his religion; however we could say he was forced into the army but the things he did while he was in the army, those he was not forced to. ...During the years 1800 to 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte was preparing a large army. His goal was to spread the idea of the French Revolution and ultimately expanded France's bountiful pride and glory. The way this was going to happen, according to Napoleon, was through expanding French territory. In order to do this he would need a large army, so that involved enlisting men by conscription. The army was filled with French men, as well as men from Germany and other surrounding areas. The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier looks first hand look at the life of an average soldier at the time, Jakob Walter. He was a nineteen year old german boy enlisted by conscription and assigned to regiment Romig, later known as Franquemont Regiment. In somewhat of a memoir, he dives into the progressive demoralization of self-preservation, pressure of attacks, and prejudice among Napoleon's troops. In the beginning, Walter was merely writing more to himself about the circumstances he went through. In the Campaign of 1806 and 1807, his writing was unemotional and non-interpretive. He did not express much about what he felt and was straightforward with his experiences. During the Campaign of 1812, in Russia, it became apparent to him that he may not survive as easily as he once thought. This was evident in his letter to his parents on 9 June 1812. All of these chapters have to deal with the human body and what makes the human body what it truly is. Such things as Genes. Genetically modified organisms(GMO), genetics/inheritance, and stem cells. In chapter seven we talked about the structure of human DNA. DNA is a rather complex structure because that's just what it is a double helix structure. Hereditary Molecule are served as an instruction manual for how to build an individual. One DNA molecule has 23 pairs of chromosomes one from each parent. The 23ed chromosome is what determines your sex, you could either be a female XX, or a male XY. Part of the chapter we did a lap on making our own DNA chain. We had to take our supplies and see what traits we had two off and which one was closest to the lines in yo have that trait. Once you made you match you had to cut them out and put them with the other chain to from your DNA linking them together. Chapter eight is about GMO’s. A GMO is where something in the DNA sequence has been altered by humans. Certain things have been changed by humans. Such things as plants. ...“I remembered a common saying at home, ‘A campaign is always made out to be worse than it was…’” (Walter 88). Jakob Walter was a German mason drafted into Napoleon’s army as a foot soldier. In his diary, found years after it was written in 1932, Walter gave a unique perspective of France’s efforts to expand its empire through three campaigns invading Russian territory. The account of Jakob Walter shows the invasion of Russia from a soldier’s mindset rather than an officer, which gives historians a different view point than many historical texts from that time. Walter continually expressed his indifference about the campaign and about his belief that the army was in many cases, leaderless. He came to realize that the saying from home was completely false—that he would never want his family to know about his true conditions because of his complete apathy towards the famine and decimation, his indifference about Napoleon’s goals, and the disgust for Napoleon as a leader. Throughout the diary, Walter mentions other men’s sufferings and how the hunger and cold caused men to act in demoralized ways. He said, “I could look with indifference at the people falling by the hundreds, although the impact upon the ice bashed their heads. I could look at their rising and falling again, their dull moaning and whining, and the wringing and clenching of their hands…. Nevertheless, I had no pity” (Walter 88).
