Many of the characters in the novel, The Great Gatsby, such as Gatsby, try to attain the American Dream throughout the story. For instance, Gatsby works as hard as he can in order to build up a substantial amount of money. He longs for Daisy to see all of the progress he has contrived in his life. Having Daisy as his wife, and having an abundance of money to spend is Gatsby’s perception of the American Dream. The poem “My life closed twice before its close” by Emily Dickinson can undoubtedly relate to Jay Gatsby’s character and his endeavor to attain the American Dream. Gatsby spends every day of his life working toward obtaining Daisy’s love and affection. He throws enormous parties with the hope that Daisy will attend one of them and he will be able to sweep her off her feet once again. The speaker is saying that there are two dreadful events that took place in his or her life before his or her death. These occasions brought the speaker so much agony that he or she feels as though he or she has died. Gatsby most likely feels this way when Daisy walks out of his life. He is so devastated that he feels as though his life is over and only Daisy returning could improve it. Gatsby is head over heels in love with Daisy and her departure not only breaks his heart, but brings his life to a halt. In conclusion, the poem “My life closed twice before its close” relates to Gatsby and his life immensely.
