...The Truth Behind Dietary Supplements When I was growing up our cars had rolled down windows, and if we wanted to change the channel on TV we had to get up and manually press the button. Today we have remote controls for almost everything, and we are used to a world with magical buttons. Maybe that is why our society thinks that even food, and vitamin intake has a magical button. I used to take Vitamin Supplements on a regular basis, and I was certain that my body was receiving everything it needs through the magical pill. I was certain I was doing the perfect thing until the day I attended Wellness Class. The professor asked the whole class to bring one bottle of a supplement that we were taking. Almost the whole class brought in some kind of supplement, and the experiment began. There were more then twenty small plastic cups half filled with regular vinegar, and everybody put one tablet from our bottles that we brought in a cup at the same time. Half an hour later, all of us had to take out whatever was left of the tablet, or capsule out of the cup. Most of us took out at least two thirds of the a tablet that was still in one piece, a couple of people even took out a whole tablet, and only a few weren’t able to take out anything because it had dissolved. Well, the experiment is actually proving how our bodies are absorbing those supplements, and in most cases it just goes through us. After the experiment the professor started talking about Dietary Supplements, and...

...Fiber and its function in our bodies 10/09/2011 Fiber is important when it comes to our body and our daily diet. We need to make sure that we consume a certain amount of foods in each food group. We also need to make sure that we get our daily vitamins, fiber and many other nutrients on a daily basis. Dietary fiber adds bulkiness to our diet. It makes you feel full sooner; it can be supportive in controlling our weight. Fiber aids digestion, helps prevent constipation, and is used for the treatment of diverticulitis, diabetes, and heart disease. The main function of fiber though, is to regulate digestion in our bodies. Soluble and insoluble fibers are a little different; they both supply imperative elements that keep you making a healthy lifestyle. When we talk about insoluble fiber, this fiber does not dissolve in liquid. Its task is to keep the digestive tract free of anything that might cause a blockage in your body. It will absorb liquid and expand in the tract, successfully speeding your process of moving bulk through the tract while scraping the interior walls clean of any residue. Then there is soluble fiber, which attracts water and form a gel that slows the digestive process down. It postpones your stomach from emptying and makes you feel full longer. This helps us control our weight and over eating. When your stomach is slower at emptying, it may affect our blood sugar levels. This can have a beneficial effect on our insulin sensitivity, which can help control...

...Environmental Scan: Political/Legal Summary: There are several Acts including the Competition act, Consumer Packaging and Labelling act, Trade-marks act and textile Labelling act that will both work in favor and against the success of Lulu Lemon. I do not foresee these acts changing or altering very greatly over the next 50 years. Acts: 1. Competition Act – “An Act to provide for the general regulation of trade and commerce in respect of conspiracies, trade practices and mergers affecting competition”. Competition is encouraged in Canadian companies in order to promote the economy. This allows for expansion opportunities for Canadian competition in world markets, in order to ensure that small and medium-sized companies have equitable opportunity to participate in the Canadian economy and in order to provide consumers with competitive prices and product choices. This could affect Lulu Lemon because competition is encouraged in Canada. This means that other companies could come in and introduce yoga wear at more affordable prices or more convenient locations. This is helpful to Lulu Lemon because the Competition Act is set to help encourage Canadian companies to expand to competitive markets across the world. 2. Consumer Packaging and Labelling act – Labelling false and misleading representation related to prepackaged products. All information on a package, whether in symbols or words, must be neither false nor misleading to the consumer. There are three mandatory...

...index, high fiber diets have shown a beneficial effect in controlling diabetes and reducing diabetes occurrence. (Jenkins D. J. A. et al 2008) In addition to significantly lowering values for fasting and postprandial plasma glucose, high-fiber diets have also positively contributed to long-term weight loss and to decrease the risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks. (Lindstrom J et al. 2006) Types of dietary fiber and their properties Fiber exists in two forms, soluble and insoluble. Some examples of soluble fibers are pectin, gums ß-glucans and hemicelluloses. Foods that contain soluble fibers are fruits such as oranges and apples. Oats, barley, chickpeas, okra, and legumes also contain soluble fibers. Soluble fibers can adsorb or bind nutrients such as lipids and bile acids and decrease their absorption, which leads to decreased serum lipids. Some of their function is to bind water causing a decrease in transit time and an increase in fecal volume. They also have the ability to form gels that lead to a decrease in nutrient absorption. Examples of dietary fibers classified as insoluble are cellulose, lignin, and some hemicelluloses....

This will affect me directly as it could lead to a change in the foods I choose to cook and eat. 2. Describe the proposal/change. The proposal will allow the FDA to collect information from a study about the relationship between selenium and the risk of various cancers. The proposal will also dig deeper into scientific evidence of whether health claims are ‘complete, truthful and not misleading’. The proposal will enforce companies to enable the public to comprehend the information provided and to understand the relative significance of such information in the context of a total daily diet. 3. Write the public comment which you would submit to this proposal. If the proposed regulation deadline has already passed, write the comment you would have submitted. Explain briefly what you wish to accomplish with your comment. (10 points) My comment is that I encourage this new scientific study to be done so that the public is not misled on whether or not Selenium (trace mineral that is essential to good health but required only in small amounts) is beneficial to the body or not. There have been several claims that conclude that the mineral reduces the risk of certain cancers, but the FDA has ruled that these claims are very limited and not...

...The Function of Minerals and Water Lisa Foster SCI/241 Nutrition November 4, 2012 Sandra Silmon Minerals play two major functions in the body; those pertain to the forming of the human physique, and also in the aid of bodily operations. Large quantities of certain minerals are needed and they are identified as Macro elements, then the other is needed in a lessened dosage, and they are recognized as Microelements. Calcium is a very essential mineral because it is, helpful in maintaining healthy teeth and strong bones. It also aids in the nerve operation and clotting of the hemoglobin. The greatest basis of nutrients is fruits, nuts, kernels, and vegetables, out of the several presented green leafy vegetables are deemed the top source. Various nutrients are tough to receive from fruits or vegetables, so in order to receive the best minerals from them extracting the juices are suggested. This process divides the minerals from the filament of the botany. An essential foundation of minerals that the human physique needs can be found in coconut water. It contains supplements, minerals, and enzymes, along with it being low in fat and sugar. Coconut water can also be administered both orally and in an IV. The chemical balance is that similar to what is found in the human hemoglobin. Coconut water is also a treatment for dehydration and undernourishment. Physicians have used coconut water as a treatment for illnesses connected to dehydration such as diarrhea, influenza...

...Mineral and Water Function Ebony M. Dean SCI/241 January 18, 2013 Joseph Casico Mineral and Water Function The body needs many minerals; these are called essential minerals. Essential minerals are sometimes divided up into major minerals such as macrominerals and trace minerals like microminerals. These two groups of minerals are equally important, but trace minerals are needed in smaller amounts than major minerals. A balanced diet usually provides all of the essential minerals. There are seven minerals that play a large part in the body and how it functions. The seven minerals are sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sulfur. All of these minerals have a certain function and its own source. Sodium is needed for proper fluid balance, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction. A good source of sodium is table salt, soy sauce; large amounts in processed foods. Chloride is needed for proper fluid balance and makes stomach acid. A good source of chloride is also found in table salt, soy sauce; and found in small amounts in milk, meats, breads, and vegetables. Potassium like sodium and chloride is needed for proper fluid balance. A good source can be found in meats, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth; helps muscle relax and contract important in nerve function, blood clotting, blood pressure regulation, and immune system health. ...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM: Rationale and Background Background of the Study Chickens play an important role in science, recreation, conservation, and agriculture. They are economically significant because of their value as research models, as pets and hobby animals and, of course, for their important role in food production. Chickens are very delicate and need special care in order to survive, grow, and become productive adults. Thinking about what chicks need before they arrive will help ensure a healthy flock of chickens. Chicks need a clean environment that protect them from drafts and keep them at the proper temperature. Their environment must provide them with constant access to food and water, and it should have proper flooring material, and be located in a safe place away from predators. Poultry animals are raised for home use or for profit, especially on a farm. The rearing of poultry and livestock solely as food is costly, because animals are positioned high in the food chain, meaning, that large amounts of energy have been lost en route; more simply, there are more calories in the fodder used to provide meat than in the meat itself. Chickens need different types of feeds at different stages of their growing period. Each different feed provides different levels of nutrients, protein and energy levels which the bird needs at different stages of their life. As the intake of feeds increase, there is also corresponding increase in intake of food supplement. The amount...

...Dietary Supplements Summary Sonya Spencer SCI/241 December 21, 2014 Stacey Nagy Dietary Supplements Summary Dietary supplements are substances you eat or drink. They can be vitamins, minerals, herbs or other plants, amino acids (the individual building blocks of protein), or parts of these substances. They can be in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form. Many supplements contain active ingredients that have strong biological effects in the body. ("Dietary Supplements", n.d.). This could make them unsafe in some situations and hurt or complicate your health. For example, the following actions could lead to harmful even life-threatening consequences. Food and drug administration regulates both finished dietary supplement products and dietary ingredients. FDA regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering "conventional" foods and drug products. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. ...Introduction The staining test is a test for fiber identifycation. The test aims to identify four fiber contents of samples. It is to distinguish four fiber samples A, B, C and D from cotton, wool, polyester and nylon. The principle of that is to make use of small tuft of fiber samples and treated it with staining agent by dyeing it at short time. When different types of fibers are treated with staining agent, they will produce different coloration due to the differential of fibers construction and degree of staining agent uptake. The chemical composition, morphological structure and reativity of fibers differ from each other leading them to have particular affinity for specific staining agent. Test procedure i. At first, fiber sample A is taken for test. ii. Put the sample in the beaker with shirlastain A at 2 minues with tweezer and use glass rod to stir the fiber sample soaked into the staining agent thoroughly under room temperature.. iii. Take out the sample from the staining agent with tweezer and rinse it with cool water to wash out any excess staining agent from fiber surface. iv. Examine the fibres for staining and compare the color of the fiber sample with the samples. Observation of experiment i. During the experiment, when fiber sample A immersed into the staining agent, it is hard to soak thoroughly. While it keeps the better amount of staining agent after rinsing. Thus, it obtained the deepest color result. ii. When fiber sample B immersed into the...
