Dietary Supplements Summary A dietary supplement is intended for ingestion in way such as a capsule, tablet or powder and expected to add additional nutritional value to a healthy diet. The dietary supplement contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids that take the place of healthy foods missing or needed additionally in a healthy diet. In conclusion, dietary supplements are not meant to take the place of or substitute for foods that are essential to a person’s diet. Dietary supplements are used to improve and manage a person’s health. For instance, folic acid is can help decrease the risk of birth defects and fish oil can help some people decrease their risk of heart disease. However, there are some risks to taking dietary supplements especially if taken with a prescription. For instance, vitamin C and E can decrease the effectiveness of some forms of cancer chemotherapy. Also, taking too much of a vitamin such as vitamin A can lead to headaches, liver damage, reduction in bone strength, and birth defects. Even though, dietary supplements are not a drug, the federal agency such as FDA still oversees supplement products. Dietary supplement do not require approval from the FDA regarding their health claims etc. however, dietary supplements must indicate on their product if the product had been evaluated or approved by the FDA and that the product is not used to diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease. (National Institute of Health, 2011). If a product has been claimed to be unsafe and has been evaluated to be harmful to humans, a recall will be submitted and the product will be taken off the store shelves.
