Although there are vast similarities between the two, there are also some differences that have been known to separate the two completely. Defining Leadership has been given to us by Merriam as “a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc.” Additionally, Merriam states that leadership is “the time when a person holds the position of a leader” and “the power or ability to lead other people.” This definition allows us to think about the simplistic ways of a supervisor or team lead in which they go about their day in tasking others beneath the. Merriam also defines management as “the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business, department, sports team, etc.” If a company hires a manager who has a high level of skill providing production flow and profitability to their company, this will filter down through the ranks and provide those beneath the manager the tools for success. From personal experience, spending many years both a leadership role and the managerial role has provided a new level of understanding of what responsibilities each one of these positions held for the companies that I was employed with. Design/methodology/approach – In order to eliminate any effects of organizational differences on leadership behaviour, this study had public managers responding to questionnaires that measured their leadership style, decision-making style, and motivation profile. Findings – Statistical analyses of data from three groups of Swedish public managers (n ¼ 385) revealed virtually no significant differences in behaviour between female and male managers. Regardless of whether there is a female or male majority of employees or a female or male majority of managers, no effect on leadership behaviour occurs. Originality/value – A number of studies indicate that managers’ behaviour is different in different types of organizations.
